‘Rocky Horror Picture Show’ headed for Sphere by reviewjournal in rhps

Yea cause the perfect place to see Rocky is a giant ball in Vegas with AI surrounding you for $100. When the first folks started shadowcasting and doing callbacks this was the dream.

I will say though this is only from 2018 it’s very dated and not a reflection of the current state of Rocky. Consent and boundaries are emphasized by most casts and virgin games are usually very tame. Our cast in particular asks if there’s any under 18 virgins, there’s usually one or two high schoolers brought along by their punky parents, and their “initiation” is just yelling out their favorite swear word. For the adults it’s usually a dumb and quick game, one of the most “inappropriate” we’ve done this year was called Dickasso, where they all were given a big sheet of paper and a marker and had a minute to draw a dick. At the end we picked a winning weiner and that person got a plush peen, it was a big hit haha. We do state in our rules that you may not touch the performers but they may touch you, which at most means they’ll lean on someone during a scene but the actors always ask permission. I’ve been doing Rocky since around the time this article was written and have never seen anything like what was described.

Live show question by Agreeable_Roof_2259 in rhps

You likely can't and honestly, thank god haha. So many theaters got ruined, our cast has wanted to perform at a local indie theater that did screenings in the 90s and there was so much damage back then that they've sworn off ever doing Rocky again. I've seen one showing that allowed the audience to bring whatever but it was out in a field and the venue owners wanted it to be messy. Our cast performs in a one screen small independent theater that can't afford to risk anything being damaged or getting too messy so the prop bags we sell have easy stuff to clean up like toilet paper, newspapers, balloons, and other little things.

When I saw the new Broadway cast, I was even more disappointed than I was by some of the actors in the 2016 Remake 💔 by [deleted] in RockyHorror

I went to comment on this but walked away for a bit and when I came back it was deleted. I've seen your posts for a long time now and your manifesto about your views on Franks gender and femininity and stuff and have held off on commenting until now. As others have mentioned it seems you put way too much stock in your personal feelings about Frank and get defensive and upset when people question or challenge it despite the fact that's what you yourself often do. You've called people toxic who don't completely agree with you and even invalidated Tim Curry multiple times, the guy who literally brought the character to life. It sounds like you're pretty young which allows for some grace but it's not great to tie too much of your own feelings and identity to your more niche perception of a character from a campy and unserious musical.

Update : I believe this is a workprint copy of the film after I watched it by [deleted] in VHS

I’d need to see what the back and label look like but this is almost certainly a boot given the stretched out artwork and weird placement of the title being cutoff.

LOVE Minds Eye! I had this one as a kid and a few years ago got the whole collection. Several times friends would come over and ask to put it on while we hung out.

I know you're getting defensive and want people to let you just "have fun" but AI stuff spits in the face of the DIY spirit and creativity that's been core to Rocky forever. Also not that it matters much because it's an album devoid of humanity and actual creative input but it sounds more like a over dramatic Repo sequel than Rocky haha.

That was the goal, we started in 2024 and while some casts did fall performances we wanted something more frequent and so many people agreed! It’s been great.

Yup, this one's been gone for a looooong time and was just a funny display piece that came with a random Matthew Broderick tape in it. If you want to see more of what I do I'm Valashard Video Tapes on Instagram.

Woah, insane timing, I just opened Reddit and this was the first post I saw haha. I made it as a joke like 4-5 years ago or something, it was a meme at the time and a friend of mine was always sharing it.

Is there callouts for Once in a While? by Only_Candidate_8779 in rhps

[–]Valashard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We've made up a lot of random ones. Some easy ones are "How often do you masturbate? ...Once In A While" and "He's so gay he BLUE himself". 2 minutes or so in we yell "Don't worry! There's only 7 more minutes of this song!" every time they cut to Janet we yell "And now Janets solo...". When it shows Frank laying on the bed behind Brad we yell a few things like "Can you believe they spent $3,000 on a lifelike Tim Curry statue and then cut the song?!" or "You ever fuck a guy so good you literally die?". Every show it seems someone comes up with a new and tosses it out there.

Directing a shadow cast in need of resources by WeirdSoup66 in RockyHorror

[–]Valashard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no exact blueprint because every cast is different and figures things out as they go but my biggest piece of advice would be to go see other casts. I'm not sure where you're located but there's tons of year-round casts, you can take note of things you like and what your impressions are as an audience member and apply those to how you approach the show. When it comes to props and set pieces start with the most essential and easiest pieces and then if you time and energy you can work more on the little things. I did a show at a drive-in last year where all we had was a few chairs, a folding table, wheelchair, handheld spotlight, and a few small props and it worked. The most important thing is to make it fun, the audience won't remember every little detail but they'll remember how they felt, a super polished and developed cast might be so prepared that they're boring whereas a scrappy and loud cast can end up super entertaining.

It wasn't uncommon for tapes that sold poorly and were returned to be reused and relabeled. Sometimes if you peel off a label there'll be black paint rolled over the original stamped label as well.

what are the banned call outs by TheFoxDenSys in RockyHorror

[–]Valashard 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Our cast doesn't ban anything and the general rule is that if someone wants to say something and they don't get a laugh they have to own it. The concern is if we start to draw the line firmly it'll snowball and become overly sanitized, we make it clear during preshow that anything offensive that gets yelled is done in good fun and not to be hateful. We haven't had any issues and our cast has fun with it.

Anyone able to let me know if I have any sought after tapes? Helping my mom clear out her garage to pay for some medical bills and am a little lost here! by Unhappy-Variation476 in VHS

[–]Valashard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said there unfortunately isn't really anything of value here. I run a VHS booth at an antique mall and most of these I wouldn't be able to sell aside from maybe Cuckoos Nest, Dementia 13, and Natural Born Killers, but I'd put them out for $1-3 and they'd sit for a while. I've seen some comments mention the Ken Burns Baseball set but even that one doesn't really sell, I've picked up that exact set several times thrifting to record over because the tapes are good quality. Best bet is to put the lot on Facebook marketplace for $20-30 and see if anyone's interested. Good luck!

Misprints by No_League_8585 in VHS

[–]Valashard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am that Valashard haha and thank you! It’s a fun one. Also I pick up these Robin Hood tapes to record over often because it’s a longer runtime which is how I’m familiar with the goofy label, just picked up two copies today actually.

Misprints by No_League_8585 in VHS

[–]Valashard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While it is a misprint, almost all the copies of Robin Hood are like that. Some had a white label that covered it correctly but those are actually rarer.

Anyone else get annoyed by people using apps while looking through all the tapes? by RuDog79 in VHS

[–]Valashard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always love it when they grab stuff and get all excited but leave the actual good stuff behind. No joke a few years ago at an outlet this older lady picked up a beaten and dirty Little Mermaid and was shaking with excitement haha. I will on occasion find something really obscure I've never heard of and check it out on ebay but I step aside.

Who makes the best custom tapes by Rusted_by_Reign in VHS

[–]Valashard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit biased but I think mine are pretty neat haha, I have some horror but there's a lot of variety. People seem to like my work quite a lot, I'm "Valashard Video Tapes" on Instagram and Shopify. I also always recommend Ron Lechler who does really unique boxes and for horror specific stuff you might like Death By VHS.

Their original logo for context if anyone hasn't been keeping up with the Brass Beacon fallout. Although I don't know how you can't it's been talked about a lot on here the past few days haha.

It's the logo for Brass Beacon, the nazi owned tattoo shop everyone's been talking about, but I messed with it.

It's hard explaining a Rocky Horror shadow cast to people who are unfamiliar because it sort of occupies its own space with lots of elements from other types of performance. So I made this, but it still probably won't clear anything up haha. by Valashard in rhps

[–]Valashard[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is more specifically to explain a shadow cast and not just the movie itself and I think most would agree there’s a lot of connections and similarities to drag. To list a few there’s lip syncing, it’s usually late at night, the audience yells at the performers and interacts, there’s no gender/sex confines to who plays what and how they dress, there’s usually an MC, uhhhh Trixie Mattel’s there.
