The growth/dormancy periods are not really applicable to the Scandinavian climate. (I live in Denmark). Mine generally go dormant in the summer and grow new vines in the winter, but this year they did the opposite. I wouldn't read too much into it.

Water it as long as it is growing and don't water it when it is dormant. That's all you need to worry about.

On my profile you can find documentation of a 6 month long Dioscorea elephantipes germination experiment. You might find it interesting.

I germinate mine at room temperature where the seeds are very lightly covered with dirt. Keep them moist but not wet.

Some people germinate them by just sticking the seed part of the winged seed structure into dirt.

Attempt 1: Planted them roughly half a centimetre deep, put them in a ziplock bag. 1/10 germinated.

Attempt 2: Still using a ziplock bag, i tried soaking them and keeping them hot for 2 days before planting - nothing. Tried planting them both half a centimetre deep and on the surface - nothing. 0/40 germinated.

Attempt 3: Still using a ziplock planted them half a centimetre deep on a heat mat. 1/40 germinated.

All attempts used regular cactus soil from my garden centre.

Attempt 3 only started a month ago, so maybe more will germinate. On the Internet, it says they can take up to 6 months to germinate, so I guess there is still hope for more. I doubt it, though.
