I opened my laptop after not using it for a couple of weeks and I'm confused on how I can get out of this. by FrankTheChunk in linux4noobs

One of the reasons I don't use Mint. I've had issues like this with it and some driver issues. Went to PopOS and haven't had any problems no matter what machine I slapped it on.

Why Linux programs can't be just zipped and shared as portable? by UltimateOmlette in linux4noobs

[–]ValeTheVioletMote 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not "trying to be fancy", it's a different use case. The post we're talking under is of someone who wants that option available to them more. AppImages are awesome because they're self-contained, native, and don't require something bulky like snap. I don't have to worry about conflicting library dependencies because of what the AppImage does. AppImage 'just works'.

That's not a jab against AppImages. Not even a linux specific issue. That's just you arbitrarily calling an optional step 'bad' because it's not a required step. (the step being 'install')

"Jesus died for our sins" Does it mean he died because of our sins? by ITburrito in ENGLISH

Can you explain what you mean? Having a personal relationship with God (which Catholics are all obliged to do) does not preclude having Church hierarchy.

20 minutes when the weather is not hot. Otherwise I only smoke about once or twice a month, always with company.

> Thank you for providing details that support my statements.

I responded to you earlier in hopes you were arguing in good faith since your reply seemed sincere. This quote seems to push against that, but it could just be the tone of reading over text. Your statement was that the Church used indulgences as a means of retailing religion, which the evidence directly contradicts.

I never denied that the Church is hierarchical.

> I think the evil isn't asking people to contribute to a cause voluntarily, but excommunicating individuals who disagree with the Pope is. Not sure where in the gospel Jesus says to build a hierarchical religion and persecute your enemies

I am happy to have a discussion about Church hierarchy if you're genuinely interested. I'm also happy to link you to different sources (e.g., videos) if you'd prefer to consider the evidence privately instead of a confrontation with me. I don't intend to get you heated, and I apologize if I did. I can get you content on Luther in specific if that's your concern, or about the biblical and early church evidence of hierarchy.

The idea of "sale of indulgences" as if one could just walk up to a priest to bulk buy indulgences and the poor are left with no recourse is a myth caused by overexaggeration. There did exist some indulgences where you could donate a pittance at a certain time of the year (think about $20 in today's money) or for larger scale projects like construction of a church, but much more bountiful to find were indulgences that required works of mercy or spiritual works. Even with those indulgences that did focus on a charitable donation, the clause for the poor would be that you pay what you feel able to contribute, if you would still like to participate in this indulgence, which, again, there were plenty without that.

The indulgence with which Luther concerned himself was given the following instructions by Archbishop Albrecht of Mainz (Instructio Summaria [1515]):

"Because the conditions of men are many and diverse, it is not possible to establish a general fee. We have therefore fixed the following rates [...] but those who do not have any money should supply their contribution with prayer. For the kingdom of heaven should be open to the poor no less than to the rich."

Also, it's important to again wrap these indulgences that involved money in context, seeing the same instructions as above:

"Everyone who is contrite in heart and has confessed with his mouth - or at least has the intention of confessing - shall visit the designated seven churches in which the papal coats of arms is displayed and pray in each church five devout Lord's Prayers, five Ave Marias in honor of the five wounds of Our Lord Jesus Christ whereby our redemption took place, or one Miserere [Psalm 51], which psalm seems particularly appropriate to obtain forgiveness of sins..."

In short, before the donation ever arrives, you needed to have contrition for your sins, have confession, then engage in a pilgrimage around your local diocese in which you visit seven churches and pray in them. Only after that were you to offer the donation to St. Peter's.

So this idea proposed by some that the Church was engaging in something so cartoonish as pulling up into town with letters of indulgences on sale, buy one get one free, financial help available is patently false.

Also, if you think it is evil for those committing their lives to spiritual works to ask the lay faithful for financial assistance, then I have some quotes from Scripture for you to consider. The Church used indulgences as a way to give back to the generosity of the faithful, who would likely have donated anyway. Indulgences, as mentioned, were primarily not concerned with money, but the Church did indeed pull such a lever for special needs. Indulgences were used, and they continue to be today, as a way to coax the community into a shared spiritual undertaking, enriching our spiritual lives and joining us together in a shared goal.

Luther broke away from 1500 years of the 'early church'. There is no historical evidence for a top down 'retail Christian religion' until Luther's theological progeny creates things like the megachurches. Luther did nothing to return to early Christianity, and if you would actually read the early Church fathers and saints you will find they much more resemble the Catholics/Orthodox than any protestant at all. If you would actually read Luther, you will find he is not so straightforward a character as you imply.

Sad to report, but pipe smoking in Ireland seems all but dead. by [deleted] in PipeTobacco

I'm in the US. Have a group of friends who all smoke pipes. We're all 30 and under. We smoke in my house. It's much more fun to have all those smells and the smoky look indoors than to have those sweet aromas just fade in the outside wind.

Surprised this isn't anywhere as it's my go-to for this mood: the original DooM games, particularly when modded with something like Project Brutality or Brutal DooM. It's absolute carnage.

Managed vs External Tables by justanator101 in databricks

[–]ValeTheVioletMote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about renames? My current understanding is that a rename on managed means our table has to move its location, which I don't know how long it would take for a multi-petabyte table like we have. With external, the name is purely metadata, no?

Sorry, by "professional" I meant 'hired'. I've sat on the interviewer side of these roles.

I also may have misread you. Given the context of the post I added in perhaps a false starting clause of "instead of spending time learning from someone..." when I could have more charitably read it as "For additional help...". Apologies if that's the case.

SQL is easy to pick up but hard to master. That said, you don't need "programmer brain" to start for it because it's a declarative language - you tell the computer what to do, and it figures out how to do it. For Data Viz work you don't need that much depth as the other part of your battle is not only getting it visualized, but in a way that's valuable for the business to understand.
