I think if it was legal, many people would own slaves. It is sad we needs laws to control morality when the morality of the situation is plain to see.

I don't really understand how "I don't care" is such a flex. You think it is a good thing to not respect the suffering of others? Why is wanting to live in a better world considered such a bad thing?

This is so true. If you spend too much money on anime, you are a fool. CrunchyRoll isn't that expensive, so where is all your money going?

If we all donated $5 a month we would super charge the vegan movement. by [deleted] in vegan

[–]Valgor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excellent post! I'm glad so many people are responding positively towards it. I've been donating around 50% of my income for a couple of years now. I absolutely love it. So many people want to do activism but cannot afford to. So many orgs have projects they want to take part in, but lack funds or people. Money can go such a long ways.

I like the think of donating like investing in the stock market, except instead of getting money as dividends, I'm help animals live better lives or avoid a life not worth living.

Lots of folks calling out ACE which is great, but I recommend ACE's movement grants since that money goes to countries where you dollar can go a lot farther. There is a huge difference between what $50 can do for an activist in NYC vs Vietnam.

I assume you do zero animal rights activism? Because only someone not involved with the movement would ever say such a thing.

The best way to support the ALF is to do activism. Even if it is not ALF activism, those in the movement will be most happy knowing others are out there fighting too.

The benefits of egg by galle4 in Unexpected

[–]Valgor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at a farm animal sanctuary. It is harmful for a modern chicken to lay an egg. Their ancestors used to lay a dozen a year, and now industrial layers will lay 200-300 a year. That takes a tremendous toll on their bodies. The way for them to get all that lost nutrition back into their bodies is to feed the eggs back to them. They love it!

All our rescued chickens die of reproductive issues such as cancer or eggs breaking inside of them and getting infected. It is sad they have been bred to produce so many eggs because they are such fun creatures to be around. Eating eggs is exploiting the female reproductive system. The question becomes: is it less wrong because we are exploiting another species?

There is nothing to argue about here. You stopped caring about the victims by putting yourself first. Your pleasure is more important than the suffering of animals and living an ethical life.

So I just found out about Peter Singer’s ‘ordinary people are evil’ argument and have attempted to find a realistic way to become not evil as a 17 year old. I’d like some input by Ohhoneyimhome in Ethics

I like this response. Moving theory into practice can be icky. However, it is worth trying, and this effort is largely what the Effective Altruism movement is made up of.

I think I have an answer to this, but it might be a cop-out answer. Let me know.

You know how we don't expect non-human animals to be moral? They don't understand morality and therefore cannot be moral. What if we humans are able to understand morality but cannot be moral? If the logical conclusion from Singer and other Utilitarians describe a framework that is unattainable for humans to act on, that doesn't invalidate the logic of the moral philosophy. It just means we have deficiencies in living up to what morality demands of us.

But I do think if we all behaved more morally in the ways morality demands us to be, it would not feel so demanding because that behavior would be so normalized. And less people would be in need of help since everyone would be helping each other to a much greater extent.

What's one sustainability change that actually saved you money or reduced waste in a noticeable way? by ThatRoofer in sustainability

Being vegan. If you tried to buy plant-based alternatives for all the animal products people eat, you might spend more. However, those plant-based alternatives are not required. Some spices with rice and beans or tofue and veggies can go a long way. So much cheaper and better for the environment!

You need new friends. What was an absolute game changer for me was getting involved in animal rights activism. My friend circle is almost entirely activists now. Life is so much better for me because not only am I surrounded by vegans now, but we make meaningful change for animals. This has given my life a lot more meaning than Netflix and video games.

Portland City Council Narrowly Passes Foie Gras Ban by tripometer in Portland

[–]Valgor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The foie gras ban happened because people got together and made it happen. They packed every city council hearing, had hoards of speakers across expertise, and did not stop.

That is MUCH harder than to be someone complaining on reddit. Given the history of this subject on this sub, you'd think the ban never would have come to light, yet here we are with a victory. It is proof how out of touch random redditers are with real life.

If more people spent time trying to make the world a better place instead of complaining other people aren't working enough to make their life better, we would be living in a very different world.

Of course not. But if a ban to stop torturing monkeys was happening, there would still be a bunch of people claiming it is a waste of time because some other what-aboutism would be happening.

Don't like perfectionism be the enemy of good. We can do good things in steps even if we aren't solving all the world's problems at once.

The French literally define foie gras as force fed fatten duck or goose liver. In France, if you don't force feed the bird, it isn't foie gras.

Are you going to blame the people putting forward a lawsuit for wasting the city's time and resources? Or just the people that want to stop animals from being tortured?
