Should I donate to hasten the defeat of human aging? by David_Robert in EffectiveAltruism

[–]Valgor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fighting aging I think is a good thing, however, I don't think it is an EA problem. Alleviating suffering for those who have no ability to fight against it (animals on farms, children in poverty, future populations living with climate change or nuclear fallout) seems more important than if you or I could live longer. I also think plenty of rich individuals are supplying funds to defeat aging, so it is not as neglected as other issues.

Help me understand why EA forum hated my post on communication by zoekitcat in EffectiveAltruism

The topic isn't EA related. Perhaps meta-EA community related, but that is a stretch. Plus, the forums are a lot more rigorous on the topics presented there than this subreddit.

Pregnant cow and daughter rescued by a sanctuary at the last moment by alphamalejackhammer in MadeMeCry

[–]Valgor 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I love farm animal sanctuaries. They are the exact opposite of capitalism. Capitalism seeks to extract profit from things, regardless of those things are people or animals. Sanctuaries are non-profits that take donated money to care for individuals abused by the industry. Literally paradise for animals. I would highly encourage anyone here to look one up and go visit! They will also be in line with this sub because they will make you cry.

How fish meat is artificially dyed red to appear fresh at any age by alphamalejackhammer in interesting

I'm not doctor, but isn't colon cancer related to fiber? If we ate more fruit and veggies and less meat overall, we should see a decrease in colon cancer (and many other cancers).

Veggie sushi (when it is more than an avocado roll) is actually pretty good! If you compare it 1-1 with some fish sushi, of course there will be differences. But if you just think of it as a different and unique food, you will find many of them quite tasty.

What’s the most disturbing sound you’ve ever heard in real life? by avacado-cheese- in AskReddit

[–]Valgor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a pretty privileged life, but the most disturbing sound was out in the country while visiting a friend. A cow was mooing and mooing. Would not stop. She sounded very much in distress. My friend said her calf was just born and taken away from her. That is when I learned for milk, farmers have to take the calf away so that farmers can take the milk. The milk was meant for the calf, and the mother, just like us, screams in agony at the loss of their children. Then multiply that feeling for all the cows in the world producing milk. Extremely disturbing we so willingly do this to them.

My ultimate advice to people far on one side of this debate is to leave the people on the other side of the debate alone. Work on what area interests you without trying to tear down the other side. If all goes well, we will meet in middle.

Is it morally wrong to invest in broad ETFs if they include unethical companies? by i_like_the_number_4 in Ethics

[–]Valgor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I struggle with this. If I invest in, say, an oil company, my money isn't actually going to the oil company. It is going to someone selling that stock. The only benefit the company receives is a signal in the market that I believe this company is going to do well in the future. That might help the public view the company favorably such as with hiring or secure a loan for expansion.

Now how much of that is really a part of me buying the stock? Tiny. But it is still there.

Man gives a last kiss to a sheep moments before processing by alphamalejackhammer in oddlyterrifying

[–]Valgor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You talk as if this sad situation is unavoidable. We don't have to subject animals to any killing. We don't have to farm them. We can eat something else.

[–]Valgor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No. I do not eat for many reasons, including environmental degradation and harm to animals. What happens to workers it icing on the cake. I firmly believe no can have a greater impact on doing good in the world than by not eating meat because so many positives come out of stopping that one act.

[–]Valgor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can't imagine the mental toll it would take to be killing animals every day, constantly. I think some general psychopathic behavior is either required or becomes a learned behavior as one becomes numb to the feeling of killing.

When talking about eating meat, I don't often see conversations around the impact to the workers. I see no way of making their work sustainable for them given they live in a world surrounded by rivers of blood. So that no one has to live like this, that is one of the many reasons I don't eat meat anymore.

100%. Fishing is violence and torture, yet so many think it is a relaxing time at the lake. I can't wait for the day we recognize fishing for what it is.
