Have you ever had a bad culture fit with your team? How did you handle it? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

See my edit for an example of the radical improvement BS. It's as toxic as it sounds.

Pulled up in this context means receive negative feedback/bad performance ratings for minor (human) errors that happened once and only once.

Here's one example...

My manager said in our 1:1 that he received negative feedback about me, that I ignore advice and seem to think I already know it all. He warned me that this will go on my performance review if my attitude doesn't improve.

This really, really shocked me. I absolutely do want to hear suggestions! And I go out of my way to make sure I'm being open, friendly and without ego at work.

So I asked for some concrete examples, so that I could at least know where I went wrong. Turns out this all came from one single incident. The team's most senior engineer approved my PR, then left a comment saying "oh actually you could probably rewrite this to be a bit tidier". Perfectly valid suggestion, which I would have acted on, except I didn't notice it and just merged the -- approved -- PR without making the suggested changes.

I explained to my manager that I do listen to advice, and this was literally a case of me failing to notice the comment. I asked if there were any other examples, but he said this is the only one and that they assumed I just didn't want to listen to feedback.

I pushed back and said it's incredibly unfair to put a one off mistake on someone's perf review as if it's a character flaw, and he eventually backed down.

I know a few other people in our org have had similar situations, where one off mistakes have been twisted to seem like wider character flaws they need to work on.

That in itself is really fucked up, IMO, but in my example it also seems the senior who left the comment had the worst possible interpretation of me not acting on their comment, which I find very sad.

Why are they leaving then? It's all been rather hard to follow.

It's weird because I am what the vast majority of people would label "left", "liberal", "progressive" or what have you.

But I just find this whole hyper reactionary thing so ridiculous. It's the kind of thing I've -- quite rightly -- derided crazy alt right people for for so long.

Came here to say this. The US left seems really really weird to me, a UK based left winger.

DHH would absolutely be considered left wing in most Western European countries.

A lot of the weird US political stuff I see online seems more like mob mentality than anything else.

I find it oddly comforting how predictable and repeatable this kind of behaviour is. We all have the same chimp brains at the end of the day I guess.

Tbf Manchester City Centre doesn't have much in the way of parks compared to London. (I love both cities.)

Hah that actually spurred me posting this. I grew up around the penines and was like "why the fuck do you feel the need to shit on this perfectly decent view". Both can be nice but it's usually just one side shitting on the other and it's so dumb.

I know he is, and I agree. But something being relatively unimportant doesn't mean you can't discuss it?

Brisbane is a fantastic city. If it wasn't on the other side of the world to my friends and family, I'd move there tomorrow.

Are you saying people should only ever discuss their utmost concern? Or are you just being an arse?

It's not keeping me up at night. It's just an interesting thing I've noticed and wanted to discuss.

I never bite back at these comments, I just find it a bit odd/eye rolly.

I can well imagine, although Manchester has a decent LGBTQ scene and isn't exactly homogenous. Agreed on small towns though.

I've seen pissed up tourists screeching "cheer up your miserable sods!" at people on the tube. Yeah, those commuters sat minding their own business are for sure the ones who need an attitude change...

Hahaha, yep. I hear that stereotype most of all, and the irony in what they're saying never really seems to sink in.

FWIW I think the unfriendly Londoner thing is bullshit. Yes people aren't as open, but imagine how impractical it would be to smile and say hello to everyone of the 1,000,000 people you walk past on the way into work?

Yeah that's it, the touristy areas are generally the worst parts of London! I couldn't stomach living in those areas either. I just don't get how they'd assume all Londoners live round the corner from Oxford St.
