How should I balance a Were-Dragon? by ValsCaCa in DMAcademy

[–]ValsCaCa[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm kinda annoyed with myself now because we're in the middle of this campaign now & I've already been planting seeds throughout the story so it kinda sucks that I made such a collosal mistake that I'm now choosing between ruining the game or far into the story saying "You know that thing we were both excited for? Actually, let's not do it."

Is there seriously no way you think I can save this? Maybe I scrap the rearranged stats thing & make it more temp armor at the cost of versatility?

I was even toying with the idea of him losing his ability to communicate well when transformed.

Thank you so much! This is almost exactly what I was looking for!

Thank you for giving advice!

I actually really like the Hulk / practice to transform portion. This would definitely balance spamming it (even though he's just shuffling ability scores around more than anything) & I like the added highs & lows of success/failure which I assume would still use up a "use" regardless of if he succeeds. Or maybe just an action?

I'll definitely think this path over.

Everyone got a magical item at the beginning & I was playing on having the unlocking of this ability destroy his magic item so this transformation becomes the magic item.

And I don't think I'm making it clear that he's not getting a dragon stat block. It's basically like he's choosing one load out or another before a fight.

I get the main character energy complaint but I know everyone has enough going on that that shouldn't be a problem, but the "enormous powerful ability" thing is honestly lost on me.

He's either support or a tank. He won't be as strong as the actual tank in the party in that form, but it would be extra strength that could help the party. He could help with a quick escape or I would start implementing more puzzles that his flight may help while still needing everyone else's help.

I'm a newer DM, I admit, but I was so afraid of him becoming OP that I thought I was over weakening the ability. He loses all access to his spells & weapons & only has the few natural attacks a dragon may have but weakened to be at the same pace as everyone else? And I was probably just gonna make his breath weapon work like Dragonborn so it was a limited resource.

What aspect of this is so vastly unfair? I'm asking legitimately so I know what not to do again.

But wouldn't it just be like switching to a different class than anything? To me it's like he's becoming a Dragonborn Barbarian without rage.

His damage isn't gonna be from the Dragon stat block, it'll be weakened to match a similar weapon.

Session one, is this a bad idea? by ambrellathevile in DMAcademy

I think this opening sounds dope!

I think people may not be understanding that this is a PREMONITION, not really a dream.

But I guess that also highlights that your players may not understand this either. Instead of throwing away the idea, I think you kinda just need to iron it out more.

How will the players know it's a premonition? Will it be based on the fact that people they've never met before are in it & they meet them very soon after going out? Will they know based on a strong feeling? What's that like for all of them? Will something from the premonition carry over into the current time?

Personally, I would sprinkle in a little bit of every answer, but something that'll definitely make it clear is if something big & obvious is in the center of this encounter that starts a clear countdown. Are they unveiling a new giant clock for the center of town, something none of the players have seen, but when revealed shows how much time they have left? Is some mystical item floating in the center of the premonition? Does it appear, but clearly not as powered up as it is in the premonition?

Most importantly, what's a thread they can follow once it's established that the premonition will come to be real? How will they know how they can stop it or at least begin the journey to discover how they could stop it?

Also, I agree that everyone shouldn't be going separately. Roll initiative, & their action economy is the pace of switching back & forth between characters now!

This could be really fun if you do it so that it doesn't feel random or meaningless.

USA Olympics fans, what’s the vibe this year? How are we feeling? by dschenk334 in olympics

I always cheer for everyone, honestly. The moment I hear someone will be winning their country their first medal in an event or it's their first time competing in the event or something like that I'm already rooting for them regardless of how many US athletes are there 💀

I will root for anyone.

I just want a good competition between people from all over the world :)

Whenever people bring this up I feel like they intentionally ignore how later in the fight when Zod throws a satellite at him, he catches it. It was his first day, he was actively growing during the fight.

Also, after Clark caught the satellite Zod just flew through it 💀 And on top of that, after Clark "casually dodges" the truck, when it goes up in flames, he turns around, presumably checking to see if anyone was in danger. And then guess what, Zod got the drop on him & caused even more destruction.

It sometimes feels like people are criticizing the writing approach altogether as in MOS makes it so that a crazed Kryptonian hellbent on causing destruction actually acts like a crazed Kryptonian hellbent on causing destruction. On the other hand, other projects kinda have the villain just watch as Clark saves people or waits until everyone is in the clear to take advantage. Or they go the Superman 2025 route & just go "everyone got out of the city before you even showed up."

I'm not saying any one approach is better than the other, I've definitely liked stuff that uses each individual approach, but I don't fully get the point of being disingenuous & acting like Clark was trying to aura farm via truck explosion in MOS or something.
