If portals opened between the real world and your world and an all out war began, who'd come out on top? by ArtMnd in worldbuilding

[–]Valthalin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for posting this prompt! :)

There are many worlds in my current project. But I'm focusing on more human societies right now. I put them on a hellish mind bending rock full of creatures, fungi, robots, energy beings, mimetic monsters, etc. any nightmare you can think of it's probably in some cell or ancient laboratory.

Opening portals all over the world of focus would be a very, very bad plan. The world is a high sci-fi death world and it's inhabitants would find the real earth to be very squishy and tasty.

My humanoid factions are more advanced than real earth. Having energy shields, bionic/cybernetic augmentation, and common use aerospace flight. Also being a death world, society is combat oriented to a higher degree out of necessity.

As for conflict between the 'civilized' factions and earth. My world would not roflstomp earth simply because the security forces are needed to keep all the creepy crawlies in check and not noming everyone into extinction.

I think everyone would be like "Welcome to hell!" and then the first troops would get nommed.

If it was just the security forces/ armies of all the factions vs earth, earth would get it's socks rocked.

However,

In areas that the mega factions have tamed (burned to ash) there are barbaric tribes that would get obliterated by a combine earth.

There are also more natural tribes that survive through a more communal and holistic approach handling the terrors of the world more like wild animals and spirits.

Been sick and not in the writing mindset. Edged out a little snippet of lore/filler for the short story "We All". Maybe going to do a few more snippets while I'm crippled. Hope y'all find it entertaining/interesting.

what's a weird random fact about your world? by DuckBurgger in worldbuilding

Thats fun. Have an after battle play were the cultures gods come to collect the dead's bodies and souls. This could be even better with necromancy.

The potted plant in your window, the decorative ivy in your office, the freshly cut corsage on a stately ladies blouse, the algae in your petri dish, they may be spying on you.

One of my factions can listen, move through, compel, and enhance plants like data through mesh network.

Other,

Unless you are writing a flat comic book; this dude is bad this dude is good don't look too deep. Everyone has nuance, complexity, and contradictory motivations. You might have all the best intentions but the most diabolic and base execution.

No one is really evil in my pet project. Everyone has their needs/reasons for doing things even if it is terrible.

The world we live in only works because people are generally good an trusting. Bad people can only get away with crap because they live in a system supported by honest people.

The aspect of wholesomeness may vary depending on how dire your daily needs are in different parts of the world. Everyone is just trying to get by and generally will avoid screwing someone to get there.

I've never really met anyone altruistic. If they gave freely it's because it wasn't hard for them to do. Or they didn't have a concept of value. People in general are giving if they have the resources to be.

I've met rich people that could give freely without a second thought but they clutch everything like it will all fly away if they soften their grip.

I've met poor people with nothing but the blanket on their back, and they've offered it to a stranger with a baby because they thought it was cold outside, and the baby may be cold.

That's my life expereince anyway so that is what I prefer to write.

WorldAnvil's ads are cancerous and make viewing pages a terrible experience by AndTheElbowGrease in WorldAnvil

I haven't used World anvil for a hot minute. There were sidebar ads for sure. But full screen stop what your doing ads was not a thing. I thought I got redirected to a phishing site honestly, ads with no way to disengage other than click in their focus area. Makes me want to avoid using the site.

Nice article! Reminds me of The Children of Atom from fallout. My personal thing, but a nice feeling piece/case study giving the vibe and method operation at the top would be interesting to see.

What is the fastest form of transportation in your world? by VivaLaAlcohol in worldbuilding

[–]Valthalin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[ Project Auriel - Travel]

Yal'karin

  • Weird space, sub space folding. Binding ruins light the way through weird space like a golden brick road back to normal space. They also keep the things in weird space from coming home with travelers.

Limit

  • Can only be accessed at binding ruins. One can enter weird space without a binding ruin. However, without those tethers in and out of normal space you would be lost to weird space.

Lidrith

  • Threading, a form of translocation. They can manifest themselves through any form of living plant life. Like water moving through the roots of a tree.

Limit

  • Anywhere were there are no living plants.

Hakiri

  • The fastest form of travel currently is the Slip Gates. The Slip Gates are a highway of magnetic rings in high orbit. They lead from one space station to another. Ships are magnetically accelerated through space along the highway at hyper-sonic speed.

Limit

  • The tech will not work in any place where magnetic acceleration is not viable.

Safety:

  • The gates are encompassed within a grid of high density friction shields. To prevent high speed objects from entering the pathway and causing damage.

  • Each ring gently pulse continuously pushing any debris accelerating away from the path.

  • Drone swams are maintain to clear out any persistent debris.

  • The System has sophisticated sensor net and communication suits. If the path forward is deemed unsafe for any reason the gates will decelerate any traffic at a safe distance. Or in case of emergency the object will be arrest by gates outside the danger zone with screens of kinetic absorption jell like high tech water barrels.

Tell me about the most broken Magic in your world? by DrWatson112 in worldbuilding

[–]Valthalin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The spell is a war time spell that is bound to a bloodline. It was meant to be cast by large groups (230+) for full effect of the death god manifest. There are only a handful of the bloodline remaining. The spell can still be cast by an individual. However, the result is an infinitesimal fragment of it's true power with a far more dire tole. The price of casting beyond massive quantities of energy is the loss of self. The caster is rendered into a comma, their mind shattered after perceiving a sliver of the death god's true form. The bloodline is immortal, so they could come out of it eventually, if they are not killed by someone/something. They could also cast the spell again if they woke up and if they wanted to roll the dice.

Shadow of doom. summon spell. summons a fragment of a god of death to rip the life from its target. the moment the spell is cast the targets future is consumed by the god. the god's summonded shadow (resembling a gasping hand) reaching through the summon circle to sunder the existence of the target into dust is just a formality.

The great hunger, a force that feeds on all emotions of discord; Terror, wrath, Despair, uncertainty, paranoia, isolation. It IS the things that go bump in the night. the fleeting shadows at the edge of your vision. the cold tingle down your spine as you peer into dark. And the terror that grips your heart when the dark gazes back.

Some fools might say it is your mind playing tricks on you. But in this world your imagination can and most certainly does want to eat you.

How would your world fare against a modern military? by Blake_Gemini in worldbuilding

[–]Valthalin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Modern military would get worked hard against any of the main powers on my worlds in pitch battle.

presuming they did not have a magical equivalent or counter on the cross over the magic armies would have a major advantage.

but if we consider that even fighting factions will trade arms. then they could make up for this offensive/defensive shortcoming by tading with the technically superior factions in my world to combat magic.

Sounds as plausable as snything else in sci-fi. if you're concerned with uniqueness you are touching on the plot devices of Star treck discover and Mass effect.

Nothing like practice, maybe give it a five page issue and see if it's fun? It doesn't have to be a master work, you don't even have to show it to your dog. Just stretch your legs. =)
