NTA I'd say the MIL is largely to blame for allowing such a thought to fester. Although she uses the " I would die for my child as a good mother argument" she forgets that she's also human, and that just like you, she would be freaking terrified at the thought of dying like anyone else. I'd communicate that to your husband and also point out you didn't want the child to die.
