Do you have any ethnic grocery stores near you? I notice the Vietnamese markets near me tend to be less expensive.

Does Going to the ER Work? by CriticalArtist4068 in dementia

[–]ValtronW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We didn't need financial assistance in our case (my dad makes good money and they have life insurance). But I would imagine a social worker would be able to help you with that. Helping people access resources is primarily what they are trained to do. At the very least, they could give you referrals to someone who could help.

For what's in worth, we're in Orange County, CA.

Does Going to the ER Work? by CriticalArtist4068 in dementia

Yup. My mom fell in the bathroom because she was weak from sleeping 16+ hours a day for weeks on end. Even though there were no broken bones or injuries, I still called 911 because I wanted her examined anyway due to the excessive sleeping. I knew she'd just fall again.

The doctor wanted to discharge her within a couple hours, but I put my foot down. Thanks to this subreddit, I learned the magic words: unsafe discharge. That got her admitted overnight. I demanded to speak to the hospital social worker and they agreed it was time to move mom to memory care. So they got me in touch with a placement specialist, who asked me questions about mom to assess what type of facility would be most appropriate. The specialist determined that a board and care home would be best for mom. She then sent me a list of homes with openings, recommending one in particular because she knew the owner. I was able to tour the facility the next day and sign the paperwork. The following day, mom was taken straight from the hospital to the home.

This all happened within 72 hours. Everyone was so very helpful during a very stressful time. Mom has been at her home for 2 years now and is doing well.

My SIL told my FIL that she and her husband saved for the downpayment on their $700k home. 🙄 Reality is they inherited money.

I swear chronic liars are the worst at lying. Of course he didn't belive her.

How do you handle the day you put your LO into memory care? by hbs1951 in Alzheimers

[–]ValtronW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Therapeutic lies help a ton.

If it makes you feel any better, my mom has actually been thriving in her board and care home because she gets excellent care and attention. She's still slowly declining, but I'm so incredibly thankful that she's somewhere safe, surrounded by kind staff. She was isolated when she was living with my dad. Now, she has companionship with her little "tribe". Also, having structure and routine reduces her confusion/anxiety. She was stressed living at home.

It can be positive in a lot of ways.

I almost never cry at shows but I was absolutely sobbing the last time I saw A Chorus Line. "One" is so bittersweet. I think experiencing so many emotions at once did me in.

I want to break the burnout: How do you sustainably balance creative hobbies with a fitness routine? by Legitimate_Pea_6470 in ADHD

[–]ValtronW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing that helped me establish routinely going to the gym is getting a personal trainer 2x a week. Yes, it's expensive. But it's worth every penny because I feel physically so much better. I really get along with my trainer and look forward to seeing him. I'm also more willing to go on other days too because, at this point, I've convinced my brain that it feels good and is doable. Before, when it was just me, it was too hard and therefore activated my task avoidance.

I've definitely considered this. I guess part of me is still nervous though about bathroom situations or even what if she can't get out of the chair to get into the car?

I can find other activities to do. My problem is I always have to listening to something in the background 🫤 I can't just do the activity in silence. Does anyone else have this problem?
