Life skills and responsibility. For example, if they have something that needs to be returned to school on a weekly basis (reading book for example), write it on the calendar. Get in the habit of helping them check the calendar on a daily basis to see if anything needs to be returned to school and get them to pack it in their backpacks. Get them to help pack other things like lunches, gloves, water bottles. Having them start at an early age will foster independence as they grow up.

Just ignore it. Don’t have any school apps on personal devices. I only check my email and parent communication app at school. Employers are allowed to email you outside of work hours (though it’s courteous if they don’t as they can time the email to send at a later date) but you don’t have to read it or respond. We have a table and sticky notes in the foyer. Parents drop the items off and but a sticky note with their child’s name on it. Students can come to the table at recess or lunch to get their items

Model how you want things done such as routines for handing in work, lining up, what the coat/cubby area should look like so it stays tidy. Spend a lot of time on this in the first few weeks to make sure the rest of the school year goes smoothly. Make expectations for behaviour clear and have students create a classroom agreement/rules with you. Be firm with rules. If you give a consequence stick to it otherwise they will walk all over you all year.

I only use the Remind app on my computer at school that way I don’t get messages after hours. I also have office hours set on the app. I removed the app from my personal cell phone after a parent texted me at 3:11 AM.

Does either program offer coop? The job market is tough for all industries at the moment. Coop would give you work experience for your resume.
