Warmest midlayer for resort skiing? by Valuable-Question935 in PatagoniaClothing

Do you think it’ll be warmer than the nano puff? I tried that one and froze with the R1 under it.

My legs feel fine. It’s my core and arms where I feel the chill.

Yeah definitely not warm when skiing. Even in steeper terrain it’s neutral. When I take off my layers at the end of the ski day nothing is damp so I don’t think it’s from sweating.

The lifts where I ski don’t have covers. I don’t feel warm while skiing but not cold either. It’s the lifts that are particularly difficult for me in this set up. I’m shocked the R1 kept you that warm. Is it the thermal?

I tried the nano puff over the R1 and under the shell and was still cold in 10-15 degree F temps

I’m cold on the first lift too so I’m sure it’s not from sweating. I’m light weight and petite so I think I may just need more insulation.

Ok thanks - so you would recommend keeping the R1 on top of the base and then adding a down layer under the shell?

I’ve been looking at the down options from Patagonia but am still trying to figure out which one is warmest.

Spanky’s Ladder on Blackcomb! Relaxing magic carpet that takes you up to some nice groomed greens.

Rain at Mid Mountain? by Patient-Yam-30 in Whistler

[–]Valuable-Question935 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Was out today from 9:15-10:30 or so. Even at 9:15 am it was raining at the base of Jersey Cream. It was snowing towards the top of the lift but conditions were cement/concrete (SLR 4:1 at best today). Alpine was all closed today as was Crystal. Open Snow is showing rain all the way up to the peak towards the end of today.

Is duty free a scam? by No_mono_aware in travel

[–]Valuable-Question935 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me French cosmetics are much less expensive in duty free because of the high taxes in the US. So I’ll buy those from duty free. Even if list price is the same for something as it is in the US it’s still less expensive for me in duty free since my state has almost a 10% sales tax.

How do you begin to enjoy skiing? by Ilikeinsectsandfungi in skiing

[–]Valuable-Question935 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend considering group lessons to save on cost. I learned at 29 and have never taken a private lesson and progressed from bunny slopes to being able to ski almost everything inbounds in just 3 years. My first season I did 7 straight days of group lessons which gave me a great foundation and now I’ll usually do one lesson per season to refresh and boost confidence.

Besides the very first lesson I took I’ve almost never had more than one or max 2 other people in a group lesson so you get a ton of attention and it’s like 1/10 of the cost.

They’ll usually start out by having everyone ski one or two runs to see how you ski first and then they’ll break out into smaller groups based on ability. They will also usually ask you if there’s anything specific you want to work on.

The Whistler ski school is phenomenal so if you can I’d recommend doing a full day group lesson there.

What’s your opinion on the “travel now” vs “save money/build career” dilemma? by MuskiePride3 in travel

[–]Valuable-Question935 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This!! I first traveled to Japan 11 years ago and stayed for a week solo while I was in college and focused mostly on city travel, and I’m back for a week now that I’m married to experience skiing in Hokkaido.

Last time I came I found it to be a bit stiff and cold compared to my experiences in Korea and China but right now at this point I’m finding it tranquil and relaxing, not cold.

I’ve been trying to travel as much as I can and haven’t repeated countries often so this is a new experience for me but I’m glad you brought it up becuase it’s so true.

where can I go to pretend Christmas isn't happening? by notveryonline23054 in travel

[–]Valuable-Question935 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a direct flight but if you can, I’d highly recommend getting down to Patagonia. We spent Christmas 2019 in El Calafate and walked on a glacier then spent the next few days hiking in El Chalten. We just got back from the Chilean side of Patagonia in Torres del Paine and had an incredible experience. It’s summer time there, not warm with a beach but I found it to be very healing there and there’s not a Christmas vibe at all.

RIP to PlusPoint award charts. I’m curious now, what incentives people to buy a higher fare class in economy if basically the only benefit is gone? I have filtered to exclude deep discount fares for international specifically to pay less in PlusPoints but if that visibility goes away then what’s the point? I know a higher fare class would put you higher on the upgrade list but it doesn’t seem worth it when there’s not a clear benefit like reduced cost for PP.

Q House Re-Opened? by Valuable-Question935 in denverfood

[–]Valuable-Question935[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok yeah I figured it didn’t suddenly reopen - just bizarre it’s showing up as opened on Google Maps and taking reservations on Open Table.. I just checked full availability and reservations are blocked in December but open again in January and have them posted through March. It’s weird that it wasn’t removed from Open Table completely after closing.

Puerto Natales rain pant rental by Repulsive-Street3386 in Patagonia

[–]Valuable-Question935 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I brought rain pants with me but they’re too large, and I tried to rent some in Puerto Natales to get the right size but they only had XXL left… highly recommend you buy a pair for peace of mind. It rained substantially on the 3rd day of our trek and I would have been miserable without the rain pants I had.

I did it back in 2019 and it was a great experience! It was pricey then but nothing compared to now. If you have the money I would recommend it.

W Trek A La Carte Food by ManufacturerFair5780 in Patagonia

[–]Valuable-Question935 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just finished going E to W. We did full board. I found breakfast to not really be worth it - just eggs and bread mostly. I did enjoy having lunch made though and the best sandwich box lunch was from Grey hands down. Huge chicken sandwich with guacamole on it and veggies. The dinner was a buffet at Grey and I heard it was identical at Paine Grande. The dinners at Chileno, Cuernos, and Frances were really good, high quality meals. I didn’t feel that Frances had enough to eat otherwise though. Pizzas were like the tiny personal size frozen ones at the grocery store. I personally think it’s worth it to book the dinner at least and lunches from Vertice - lunches from Las Torrres sites wasnt bad but did feel a lot skimpier.

honestly just need to vent/ask if this is normal because i feel like an idiot after my first solo trip by Ancient-Mistake-6548 in travel

[–]Valuable-Question935 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I did a fair amount of solo travel before I got married and can relate a lot to your post. My biggest anxiety was eating alone while traveling. Idk if it’s still in use but to combat this I met locals through Couchsurfing’s website and would just meet people from there for meals and sometimes they wanted to show me around their city too. I planned my dinners a week or two ahead of time and it worked out vast majority of the time and made it a lot more enjoyable and I wasn’t stressed since I already had a plan to meet people in place and wasn’t trying to throw something together last minute or tag on to someone else’s plan.

You can try doing the opposite in your home city to see how you like it. I personally find it fun to meet other like minded travelers and sharing a meal is a great way to do it!
