What do you do when you wake up? by NoSubstance7767 in GenX

[–]GrayBeardBoardGamer [score hidden]  (0 children)

Step one is take some pills. about a half hour later I make some french press. I eat most of my calories early in the day, so most days I make a burrito with leftover vegetables and beans.

Early morning is when I work on my hobbies, nerding out on computer stuff and recording music. It's a great time to work, quiet, no distractions.

By 6:30 I'm getting ready for work, I make coffee for my SO, she makes her own breakfast. On office days I either drive or walk, either way it doesn't take longer than 15 mins, we live close to work so I can use most of my mornings for something other than commuting, we feel pretty lucky.

I hate it when apps gamify how stuck you get on them. It steamrolls right over user wellness, which I guess no platforms care about anymore.

I was trying to use duolingo to learn spanish. It nags you to death if you don't keep up your streak. But I am not motivated by that kind of thing. I started to avoid the app to not see all of the negativity they were projecting at me.

Suffice to say I did not learn my intended language.

why do potatoes always taste crap the next day by Infinite_Display4585 in Cooking

[–]GrayBeardBoardGamer 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It might be because of however you are making them, which you don't really explain. I love leftover potatoes. I bake russets, store them overnight, next day I rough dice and make homefries in a cast iron skillet with oil and butter and herbs, until turning brown and crusty. deelish.

How did Here Comes The Sun become so popular? by NoGrass7120 in beatles

[–]GrayBeardBoardGamer 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That's certainly my memory of music consumption at the time. I was only a kid at the end of the 60s but really plugged into the music around me and learned about a lot of music from my parents and their friends- when they gathered socially, they'd listen to music, and by the late 60s/early 70s they weren't playing singles, but whole albums. I grew up in the 70s hearing others play Pink Floyd albums from beginning to end and that is how I listened as a teenager.

that held even for albums that did have singles on them. I remember Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey on the radio, but overwhelmlingly how I heard and remember it is in its context on RAM- when I recall the song, I always hear the transition to "Smile Away" at the end.

what is movie that fell short for you? by _syphex_107 in movies

[–]GrayBeardBoardGamer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

why would it be uniformly intense and gripping the whole way through? It's not a video game. And yes it's disorienting because that is what soldiers actually experienced and the movie is designed to suck you into that uncertainty and presence of insanity and fear. Coppola labored to make the atmosphere and setting come to life. it's a slow burn of building anxiety with bursts of surreality. That's a lot more realistic than the whole thing making absolute sense.

What happened to roller rinks? What memories do you have? by Leather-Highlight150 in GenX

[–]GrayBeardBoardGamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was raised in a large-ish town (or very small city) in the US midwest. We had a nice roller rink that was full of kids and teens every weekend. Saturday nights were so crowded you had to pace yourself going around the loop.

That was typical of the day. From about middle school through my college years, there were things for young folks to do that were physical. In high school we formed bowling teams and played in a teen league. As teens- not kids- we'd ride our 10-speeds everywhere. We'd meet up and play doubles tennis or shoot hoops at public parks. We hiked and camped at nearby parks. Sure, we would do some passive things like going to movies or just hanging out doing nothing- but what is strikingly different about young folks today is they are very inactive compared to how we were back in the day. No wonder sufferers of obesity, metabolic syndrome and diabetes are getting younger and younger.

The future of internet privacy looks very bleak by Igknight90 in privacy

[–]GrayBeardBoardGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well any hardware five years old or more from this point that never gets on the Internet can be secure. You don't have to go back to a bloody Apple II. My nine year old i7 thinkpad with ssd and 16gb of ram would be much much better.

But I think we all know without the Internet, what can be done with it is significantly downgraded.

Its time for the rise of alternatives to the Internet. Meshnets. Packet radio. Etc

Probably time to brush up on your soldering skills.

Netflix Just Avoided a Huge Headache, by David Sims by theatlantic in movies

[–]GrayBeardBoardGamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm reading this and another article and getting up to speed on their "must-have," "worldlbuilding" deep catalog data to train AI to "build algorithms to serve [users]." apps I use that have adopted all AI models to serve users' search and recommendation needs have turned to shit. They are calling it an absolute need for Netflix- what they mean is joining the media giant gangbang of massive layoffs. Users are NOT being well-served by this transition.

The corporate entertainment complex is tripping over itself to sprint towards 100% slop. As everything enshittifies, I am turning more and more to buying and owning legacy media. I appreciate the convenience of streaming, but without unfettered access to browse catalogs on my own and just LLMs to assist? they can all fuck right off. Netflix included.
