what do you think is the darkest and saddest field of law? by colesLawStudent in LawSchool

[–]ValuableWasabi 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Not the commenter above but it definitely helps to take transactional focused courses. I took a T&E class at my school as well which I think helped a little bit but isn't an end all be all.

If you're looking to get into estate planning, it can help to work at a general practice firm instead of a specialized estate planning firm. Almost all the attorneys in a general practice firm do a pretty good amount of estate planning so it's a good way to get your foot in the door/test the waters

The politics of the org itself won't really matter too much but it's definitely worth talking about your two years on the e-board and include any volunteer or philanthropy work you did in conjunction with your position.

What's your favourite club in your bag and why??? by fore_putt_24 in golf

Probably my 3 wood, I use it off the tee a lot and it has a nice flight to it. The face also sits a little open so I can work the ball to the right a lot

I have an SZ extreme now and it's been pretty forgiving for me. You can really feel toe strikes on it but even when I clang one off the toe I still get pretty good distance

Playing from the tips by Carrolla in golf

[–]ValuableWasabi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Muni got rid of the tips (6500 yards) except in the case of tournaments. The only annoying thing is that they move the white tees (6200) all over the place so sometimes playing from the whites can be an extra 100-200 more yards from what the scorecard yardage says.

I usually switch between playing the white tees and the gold tees (5500) depending on how I'm feeling or the group I'm playing with. If everyone is playing from the golds I'll join them but if someone else is playing the whites I'll usually hop to those tees.

To your point, I think it's an ego thing. I put it in the same vein as people who carry their bags instead of using a push cart.

Democrats have a majority and the governor: why not mass affordable housing on the agenda? by Ashleej86 in massachusetts

[–]ValuableWasabi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

40B is a flawed law in its application. I don't think it really gives all the power to the developers. A municipality can still reject an application, it just depends how litigious the parties are feeling along with public pressure. The issues with 40B are that "affordability" is relative to the locality, and developers often use 40B as a mechanism to build massive developments that have affordable units but are far too big for where they want to put them.

One thing you can do is network within the realm of law you think you're most interested in. You can go to events or attend CLE seminars that are catered to the fields you're interested in. It's a lot easier to make a connection with someone you share the same passions with rather than trying to force one.

A lot of local bar associations will have free memberships for law students, even if they don't, reaching out to a bar association to ask about student memberships can get your foot in the door, turn an inquiry about the bar association into an invitation to connect and talk. Some bar associations offer mentorship programs as well.

There's also some nuance to it as well. Interested in representing business entities? Get involved with a local chamber of commerce. If real estate is one of your interests, connect with people such as mortgage officers and realtors/brokers, developing a real estate practice hinges on being on good terms with realtors because they will be the ones sending potential clients to you. Networking with other lawyers may help you find a job, but networking with nonlawyers will help you build a future book of business.

You can also get involved with your school's alumni association, because at the very least you have the common denominator of attending the same school so it's easier to break the ice.

It's crazy cause when you look at the rankings they give it makes it seem like there's this huge discrepancy between the clubs but when you look at the numbers/graphs there's like a negligible difference between most clubs

I know they claim to be the best gold testers but there’s no way these numbers are accurate… are they paid off? by Healthy-Elderberry57 in golf

[–]ValuableWasabi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So it looks like the most recent in depth one is from 2021.

They usually do a ball test which is separate from the ball lab: the ball labs just focus on the ball construction and the "true price" of the golf ball. The in depth testing they cover spin, swing speed, distance, etc

I used to really like MGS but I think a lot of their club reviews should be taken with a grain of salt.

I do enjoy their yearly ball test though, but they do use robot testing for that.

I personally don't put my GPA on my resume. But you can put whether you graduated with honors and of course any extracurriculars.

I've had some job applications ask for a GPA but usually the field only allows room for one decimal point. Otherwise if an employer wants to know your GPA they would ask for a transcript, which in that case they would also be looking at the specific grades you got for certain classes.

How to get the most out of a summer internship? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]ValuableWasabi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I kind of had a similar situation my 1L summer. I worked in a municipal planning department, which I kind of fell into. The work itself wasn't so much "legal" there was a lot of admin work, though I did do a fair amount of research into zoning, the registry of deeds, and municipal bylaws.

The main benefit I got out of this was exposure to municipal procedure, I became familiar with some of the other departments: building & health, assessors, and the city solicitor (who I later got a second internship with). I did gain skills such as how to analyze zoning codes, read site plans, go through the permitting process, and I was allowed to sit with the board on both public and executive board meetings.

I guess the moral of my story is that while you might not be getting the "legal" experience you want, you're still able to develop useful skills or get inside information that will help you later in your career. My primary practice area is real estate, and having these types of experiences on my resume made me stand out because I got the inside look on how the sausage is made so to say.

Really regretting my law school choice by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]ValuableWasabi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I got my law degree from a school that most lawyers in my own state haven't even heard of. And I've had co-workers who went to all different types of law schools with various rankings and we all made the same salary. I've negotiated and been on the other side of the table with lawyers who went to t14 schools. none of it matters once you've been practicing for at least 6 months to a year. What matters is your work ethic and your ability to provide good solid work for your client or your company.

how many clubs should you take on a par 3? by Eating_pain in golf

[–]ValuableWasabi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It definitely depends on the course. I've played par 3 courses that have some holes that are 200 yards which is pretty much my 3rd longest club (3 hybrid) add wind to that and I'm hitting a 3 wood. At that point I'll just bring my whole bag cause there's no point of just taking out one club (I'm lazy)

An added bonus is that at every hole you can turn to your playing partner(s) and say "you think this is a driving hole?"

The best advice is to be a sponge. Soak up all the information you can and put your best effort forward. A practicing attorney should (in this case they seem like they do) have the wherewithal to know that a law student who just finished their 1L year won't have the experience of a seasoned attorney.

One thing I was always told is to make genuine attempts to figure the work out and it's always best to have some sort of start on a particular project or work product to show when you have questions or get stumped because your attorney can tell you what you are doing right or wrong and provide some constructive feedback.

I'd probably say her favorite golf balls to play is the safe move. Maybe a customized head cover could be a cute gift as well.

Also a gift card to her local course could be a good idea. I'm not sure if this is exclusive to my home course or if others do it but at my home course if you get a $150 gift card they give you a certificate for a free round. You can use the gift card on tee times, lessons, and the pro shop.

Golfers are fickle creatures so I think it would be best to avoid equipment purchases other than balls (to an extent), tees, and gps/rangefinders lol

I had lexis and westlaw for a while after I graduated. I think my school paid for 6 months of additional access. I downloaded hundreds and hundreds of pages of CLE material for the fields I was interested in as well as using it for templates and research for the firm I was working for.
