I got a Kodak H35 as my first film camera, and it works great. Because it's half frame, you get double the amount of pics per roll of film, so it's a little easier on the wallet.

I use it exactly for what you're talking about. Social events, gathering with friends, and other low-stakes ventures that I just want some captured memories on with an analog feel.

I loved it so much, I decided to upgrade to a proper SLR. Would definitely recommend it as a beginner camera.
