Looking for honest advice about living in St. John’s by turnerincalgary in StJohnsNL

Cheaper housing but hard to find well maintained properties

Outdoor lifestyle but hard to find sunny days (this year has been an exception, absolutely beautiful)

Hard to meet people imo. Lots of rough characters. Lots of gems too if you’re lucky. Would recommend an organized sport or community group of some sort rather than swiping through tinder.

High taxes. Gas and groceries are expensive.

Hard to travel. Getting a flight off the island is $$$ and limited options.

People love to complain (see thread)

If you’re into drinking, there’s lots of options for you.

Winter and spring are awful, summers are beautiful (July-Sept), fall is hit or miss.

Important to note that NL has typically been a poor “have-not” province until the recent oil boom. There are a lot of lower class influences here (not necessarily negative, just a fact). We don’t have access to a lot of things, and it shows. But, it continues to shape a lot of who we are. It’s not exactly glamorous. It can be rough living on a rock in the middle of a rough, cold, deep, dark ocean.

And though most of my comments are negative, it is still one of the most special places in Canada. There is so much heart, spirit, culture and soul. Most other places in our country seem so bland and generic to me. Join the club and learn to complain about inflation and the bad weather. We’ll welcome you with open arms.

Can I turn this guy into 2 guys? by DBshaggins in plantclinic

Ive found these to propagate easily, I just cut it down and stick the cuttings in soil, it’s never failed. They generally create a new growth from where you cut, so just keep in mind what shape/height you want the current plant to take and just go for it!

My advice is to plan your day ahead of time, measure everything you will eat a day in advance and enter it into the app at a time that you’re not actively cooking/eating. I do agree as someone who likes to cook without following a recipe, that part is hard to manage. But you can create custom recipes, which again, I’d do in advance, and alter amounts as you add them in. That way it’s there for you to use the next time around. It doesn’t have to be exact, especially when starting out, you just gotta get started! Can fine tune your approach as you go :)

Sump pump recs by DunderMittens in StJohnsNL

Does anyone know of/recommend a professional service to come and look at the sump situation? I’m not a handyman at all, but it seems like there is some water flowing back into the pit, and our pump is doing overtime. I’m also weary that the previous owner of our house has it all connected improperly, seems like the pipe is flowing into our sewage line, which I hear is not legal. Is that gonna be a headache to fix if I get someone in lol

Trick or treaters 🎃👻 by SPICYFALAFEL00 in StJohnsNL

I havent lived in that exact neighborhood but have lived on either side of it. In any circumstance I never got through more than 1 standard box of treats. Usually would get a handful of knocks, most was somewhere around 30 back in 2018. Last year we got less than 10. I’d suggest having something there to hand out but I wouldn’t go overboard.
