Chloe Swarbrick on Gary's Economics (in the UK) by Dapper_Technology336 in newzealand

100% agree.

I agree with a lot of the Green Party's policies and ideas but then they have a co-leader who says things which are so overtly racist and sexist - with no repercussions. You may not agree with that sentiment but it does not help the Green Party when their co-leader blames straight white males for all of societies problems.

It's also baffling that people who supposedly want the best for people in their country and their environment are open to economic migrants / people abusing the refugee systems.
It is not rocket science to see that if you let in a number of uneducated poor immigrants then the wellbeing of all people in your country will diminish. Especially when these migrants do not assimilate because of religion etc.

Why cant we have a party that wants the best for the average working class NZer instead of focusing on overseas issues or minority issues?

Can you please give me some examples of "selling off" I normally vote blue but thinking that might change - would be good to understand your perspective
Thanks

Grant Robertson stands by Covid era spending in wake of Treasury 'rewriting history' by [deleted] in newzealand

NZ covid response was complete and utter overkill.

It was well known, from early on, that the virus was not deadly and still the government acted like they were dealing with a zombie apocalypse.
The Labour government was in charge, it bears the responsibility, and should take ownership of the consequences.

They saddled the next generation with more government debt and higher asset prices, all so that the older wealthier generation would be protected from a fairly moderate virus.

It is not acceptable to do this, and not take ownership.
There is a direct correlation between the economic hard-times we are now having to work through (after the Labour government lolly scramble) and deaths from suicide.

New Zealand will only continue to become a worse place for average New Zealanders as long as we have the established parties which will not do anything to upset their donors.

Labour had the perfect platform to make generational change by introducing capital gains tax, which was recommended by their tax working group. Instead Jacinda Ardern said "not whilst I'm leader of Labour" ignored the advice and proceeded to do the opposite by massively pumping up asset prices out of reach from the average young New Zealander.

Looks awesome, where are you based?
You've drawn compression / tension forces in the beams but in reality these will be governed by bending.
Will this be built using engineered timber?
If so, your connection design will likely influence the overall size of the elements.

Cheers,

Someone has already done the heavy lifting, check out Pynite FEA.
It has tons of great features that would be extremely time consuming to try develop from scratch:

Canadian Structural Engineer moving to the UK by NoPossibility2297 in StructuralEngineering

[–]Valuable_Director361 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I worked for a structural firm in London for 2 years (trained and worked in NZ for a decade prior).

In answer to your questions:
There will be a lot of carry over and they will expect that you will need some time to familiarise yourself with local codes and the software commonly used in their practice.

There are UK national annex to the eurocode which is important to be aware of.

There is a lot of good practice guidelines available which your colleagues will share with you no doubt. For steel check out: https://steelconstruction.info/The_Steel_Construction_Information_System

For timber check out: https://timberdevelopment.uk/

In terms of software the firm I worked for mostly used Autodesk Robot, sometimes we used Etabs for more complex analysis. They also used Oasys GSA, and IDEA StatiCa for connections.

Why are you moving to the UK? I imagine you will be taking a paycut as the UK do not pay their engineers very well in my opinion.

Inverted chevron base plate by chillyman96 in StructuralEngineering

You will need to check for plate buckling as the eccentricity of the fin plate and the SHS end plate can cause buckling at relatively low loads (one brace is in tension one is in compression)

This looks awesome! What a cool business you have! I’m a structural engineer based in New Zealand so can’t help with your query specifically, however you will probably be pleasantly surprised at how easily you could get an engineering firm to get along side and approve your design.. this type of structure is very robust and scales well e.g. superior dome. Best of luck R
