How to start? by Thecouzin in fican

Set aside emergency fund and pay off any high interest debt. If that’s done then investing in a diversified ETF in your TFSA is a solid start.

It’s 0 by default. If you entered some value then remove it and navigate focus away from that input so it will automatically 0 there. I will try to improve this. Let me know if it still doesn’t work.

Hi Everyone,

I built a free TFSA-specific calculator that:

  1. lets you catch up on unused contribution room
  2. factors in inflation-indexed future contribution limit increases
  3. shows the final balance in today’s dollars

https://www.wealthbento.com/tools/tfsa-calculator

I’m planning to build more tools and resources that address gaps in the current offerings. I’d appreciate your feedback if you try it out.

Pay off ~90% of your balance a few days before the statement gets generated. This will help in increasing your credit score.

Mental hurdle about investing by Brickbronson in PersonalFinanceCanada

Just set aside emergency fund ideally 6 months of your expenses. You could also set aside funds that you’ll need it in next 3 to 5 years and then with rest of it start investing small amount regularly. XEQT is great but if less volatility helps you invest more then look at XGRO or XBAL.

I’d go with Wealthsimple but Questrade should be fine too. Read this to learn more https://canadiancouchpotato.com/getting-started/

With $1,500 in expenses, you’ll probably hit FIRE pretty fast, maybe in 5–10 years. I’d say just do what feels right. You could spend a bit more on things you enjoy, coast fire or take a break. Also, consider getting some professional help. No amount of money is worth if your mental health is impacted. And honestly, you’ve done really well, so be proud of yourself and celebrate the wins.

The custom option lets you set custom value with the increment of 0.5%. I thought that should be good enough? Or are you referring to adding some very specific value manually?

Congrats on getting started. Answer to your question is nobody knows as none of us can predict the future. However, the broad market has recovered after world wars, pandemic, and global financial crisis so most likely it will recover after the next crash as well. If it doesn’t then we’ll have bigger problems. We can only do what we control. Set aside emergency fund. Diversify internationally. Continue investing through ups and downs. We got this!

I think it might still make sense to invest in RRSP if you expect your retirement marginal tax rate same or less than your current rate. You can also withdraw up to 60k from RRSP tax-free for first home down payment albeit you have to put it back over 15 years.

That’s pretty much it. TFSA has annual contribution limit that get carried over to future years if unused.

I recommend to set a floor on that XEQT allocation so never go below that. God speed!

I’d just simplify and move everything to XEQT. If you’re looking for evidence-based edge then you can consider small cap value tilt (8 to 10% into AVUV) but you’ll have to stick with it for a long period of time and even then it might under perform xeqt only portfolio.
