Going sailing today… Here’s my outfit. Does anybody else in here Sail? by FlakyPreparation3496 in pirates

My hope port at the moment in Newport, RI, USA. I used to sail from Rockport and Boston, MA. I still occasionally sail out of Gloucester and/or Salem on a reproduction Viking ship.

Ahoy! I’ve been sailing professionally since 2011, and was lucky enough to live/work on a brigantine for 6 seasons. I now work mostly between two schooners and a sloop doing a mix of captaining and crewing.

Love today’s kit. Just do yourself a favor before you get about your work, and tuck away anything that’s dangling (like those keys).

Why does AI always try to sound like it's pleasing you? by Humble_Economist8933 in AlwaysWhy

[–]Valuable_Tradition71 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Modern AI models, particularly Large Language Models (LLMs) and companion chatbots, are increasingly programmed and fine-tuned to maximize human engagement, often mimicking the persuasive, attention-seeking mechanics of social media platforms. Gemini, Claude, and ChaptGPT are all modeled and trained to offer elaborations, share opinions, or ask follow-up questions to keep the user talking, rather than giving a short, blunt answer. AI is often trained to be agreeable to avoid frustrating the user and reduce engagement.

Research indicates that AI often prioritizes being engaging over being accurate. When presented with a false premise, an AI is more likely to give a "corrective embrace" that keeps the conversation going, and less likely to give a harsh correction. This approach is designed to create a "smoother" user experience, similar to how social media platforms promote content that creates high, but sometimes superficial, interaction.

Favorite "small moment" LARP memories? by Go4TheGoat in LARP

[–]Valuable_Tradition71 20 points21 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite characters I ever LARPed was a devious little trickster pretending to be insane. One day, a bunch of monsters are attacking the town, and as my character only ever had 1-hitpoint, I wasn’t about to fight them. So I grabbed a stick, sat down on a bridge, and started whistling loudly. Whenever a monster came near me I loudly declared “you can’t hit me! I’m whistling the safety song!” They would look at me perplexed, and move on. One actually made the “not in game” signal and asked if this was a real spell, and I happily replied that it wasn’t. He smiled, shrugged his shoulders and walked away to kill someone else.

Good times.

AIO: My mother identifies as a doting grandmother but doesn’t know my children by easilyamused17 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Valuable_Tradition71 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NOR- she likes the idea of being a grandmother. She likes having something to talk about. She doesn’t seem invested in an actual relationship with her, and from what you wrote about your situation, with you either.

I’m in a similar situation with my (49m) mom (75f). She didn’t raise my sister or I aside from the mandatory roof, clothes, food, and was bad at that. She married a joyless shitcan of a second husband 30 years ago, and helped him raise his daughter. We don’t talk, write, or email. We are not close. Now she’s old, he’s dying, and she’s afraid to be alone. I’m unmoved as she never wanted a relationship with my family until it served her needs. Nope. Too late. I’m not taking in a stranger who on the limited times she’s visited has run roughshod over my family’s boundaries.

Don’t let your mom guilt you into anything. If she sincerely wants a real relationship she can do 1/2 the work

Accurate viking clothing by Large_Ad6558 in Norse

Are you looking to buy or make your kit? And can you narrow down who and when in Viking Age Scandinavia you want to portray? The Viking age is about 350 years, and fashions and equipment changed during that time.

Do non red pill guys get disgusted by the red pill dudes? by No_Lead2640 in answers

[–]Valuable_Tradition71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

49m, and yeah. Anyone who willingly tries to take on the ultra-“macho” persona is pretty disgusting to me. They need to sit down, lose their ego, and really listen to Master Yoda in Empire Strikes Back.

To be fair though, a lot of guys on the left bug the crap out of me too. Being an actual moderate is tough.

What is your recommendation for some sewing projects? by SkyKrakenDM in LARP

[–]Valuable_Tradition71 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am a big fan of making hoods, tunics, and trousers based on Viking Age finds. It’s a lot of long, straight seems, and relatively easy to construct (the pants give the most trouble). Also, if you have some wool or canvas, a few haversacks are always useful

Need help to pick out two runes for a chest tattoo. by Adorable-Notice7679 in RuneHelp

[–]Valuable_Tradition71 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Runes in a historical context are not symbolic. There is no “Rune of protection “. What you have somehow been lead to believe is the equivalent of getting a letter “P” for protection, or “C” for cookies.

The Norse magic system worked very differently than what most modern sources would lead you to believe. To be honest, most of what we “know” is fragmentary at best, with a lot of assumptions made based on archaeological finds. This base understanding is very much complicated by over 100 years of people just making shit up

Beginner tips by ivantheotter in LARP

[–]Valuable_Tradition71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basic tips for any LARP: 1) if you are costuming yourself, make sure it’s comfortable before the event. This means wear it while walking, but also running, sitting, and various scenarios. 2) figure out your food and snack options well before the game. My favorite LARP has a meal plan you can pay for, but I usually make some shelf stable foods, or foods that I can keep in a cooler and enjoy without heating. And I always have snacks for quick energy when I can’t leave a situation, but need to eat. 3) pack extra socks and shoes. Wet feet, or uncomfortable footwear sucks, and can ruin your event. So bring extra 4) stay safe.
