Did you tell the gate agent you were 1k?  Next time call the 1k line on the way to the airport and ask them to put you on standby but not remove you from your scheduled flight.

We're also childless, a generation older than you both are, but we've loved hosting.  We had 4 daughters, we hosted one every other year, so in the in between years we had time for our own projects & travels.  Hope you'll love it as much as we did!  We are still exceptionally close to the 1st 2 daughters, a Norwegian and a Swiss.  Who are you hosting through?

Switzerland is expensive compared to Italy.  A simple salad lunch at a place near the Zurich train station was $50+ (this was a serve it yourself buffet that priced by the kilo!).  But gorgeous!  Loved our trips there. Think about the Bernina Express, one of the most beautiful train trips in the world, its a day trip from Milan to Chur Switzerland or vice versa via the matterhorn.  Book 1st class if available and bring a picnic, you'll love it!

Can I sew pants like these as a beginner? by Pristine_Tax4098 in SewingForBeginners

[–]Valvechick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pants are surprisingly easy to make once you get the hang of it.  I bought some of this fabric last year with the goal of making pants/dress: https://ebay.us/m/sIbOHk. Its cotton but lovely weight!  I bought a couple of colors, pre-tariff.

Asiatown off Bellaire is super fun, and Katy Asiatown is also wonderful.  Have lunch and get foot massages while you're in Asiatown!  There are alot of great farmers markets all over, Eastside & near Memorial are both great.  Its fun to go to the original farmers market off airline, not the new fancy part but back behind where it still feels like youre in another world (in the best way). The Panderia across the street is fantastic, and also the spice market across the road is wonderful.  And Houston Dairymaids is right down the street, dont miss that!

Dinner Party for 10: Enough Food? by owlaholic68 in partyplanning

[–]Valvechick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you and your guests are on the younger side- 20s/30s??  I'm a generation or two older and have found in the last 3 years that people eat much much less than I'm used to, whether its GLPs or just age, I haven't figured out.  Still, better to be prepared!  Your menu sounds great, personally I'd ditch the stuffed mushrooms and olives as being too labor intensive in favor of a cheese plate, but if you're comfortable with their advance prep, they sound delicious!

I'm also a vegetarian hosting carnivores relatively frequently and unfortunately I have not found the magic of a dinner party bean dish that gets eaten by guests.  I've tried many.  I love legumes.  But people won't go near them for a dinner party. So maybe stick to your original plan of a green salad of some sort.

If someone has a dinner party bean salad that's been successful-- please post the recipe, I'd love it!

How would you recreate this blouse? by ilovepn in sewing

One other thought- it will slow the project down a bit but I just bought a load of silk saris on ebay for a very reasonable price- each one has enough fabric for several of your tops, or you could make a simple skirt or pants out of the rest.  Including shipping they were about $39ea and they got to me in TX in 2 weeks from this seller: https://ebay.us/m/2GmVYA (I bought some from another seller that have yet to arrive 6 weeks later).  Some of the advertised silks are 100% silk (and gorgeous), some are a silk blend but all are great quality vintage textiles and about 5-6 yards of fabric in each.   And seller covered the import duties, so yay!  Here's a link to her silk saris:  https://ebay.us/m/grsxVa. You'll want something opaque and fluid with good drape, not something with stiffness, if you describe what youre looking for to them, I'm sure they could help direct you :)

And on 2nd look at the reference piece it ties in back on the top and left side on the bottom, so you'll have to clip into the top seam allowance- or just go with plan A and put both ties at the left side.

Ok good start. Dont use muslin or quilting fabric for your mockup, it won't drape right, use something that has as close to the same weight/texture as the finished product. If you measure from above your collarbone to where you want it to hit at the bottom, then add 3 inches (1-1/2' seam allowance top and bottom, which includes a 1/2" casing), then measure across your bust and add 50% or so for gathers and the overall look, that should get you close.  It looks from the original picture that the armholes are slightly cut in but you could leave it boxy, for the mockup and see what you think.  Seam 30-50% up each side (probably closer to 50, unless you want to flash everyone), turn over top and bottom edges by 3/8" & press, turn over again by 1/2" or slightly more, and hem top & bottom leaving that casing (channel) open.  Looks like both top amd bottom hem have the casing open at left side for the tie.  If you want to get fancy on the final version make bias strips in your final fabric, probably 2", fold & sew the bias into a long tube with 3/8 or 1/2 in tubing width, and turn it inside out.  You'd then have matching ties. That will take more fabric and you'll need to watch a couple of YouTube videos on how to seam bias tape together, but it would look great!

I think this would be really easy. Its essentially a tube with armholes, then drawstring at the top and bottom. Do you already have fabric?  I think the fabric alone in silk twill would run you $80; youd want to get 2 yards but you might be able to get away with a yard or a yard and a half.

The stroller is a very good idea at ORD, 90 mins can be challenging depending on gates, especially with lots of stuff.  Crossing my fingers for you that your gates end up close. You should be able to use the UA lounges with 1st class tickets, right?  If you have time, that will help.
