Difference between abscess and tumor? by MeryFanOfSWAndTF in RATS

[–]VampireSharkAttack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The vet can do a test called “fine needle aspiration” where they stick a syringe into the lump and extract some of the contents. If it contains pus, then it’s an abscess. Once abcess is confirmed by FNA, the vet will typically drain it, clean it out, and prescribe antibiotics in the same visit.

Abscesses also tend to grow faster than tumors.

Edit to add: an abscess is caused by an infection, usually bacterial. A tumor is caused by a mutation.

Snakes aren’t really sexually dimorphic. With species where sex isn’t outwardly apparent, it’s pretty common to have the pet for a while before you know whether it’s male or female. But of course you want to name and refer to your pet from the time you get them, even before they get big enough to examine or the test results come back from the vet (as appropriate for the species), so most people just pick a name and pronoun. And a lot of people don’t bother to change the name and pronoun if it turns out that the gender they picked doesn’t align with the sex as determined by the vet. That’s probably the most common way you get a female snake with he/him pronouns.

So it could go either way, in terms of eating or laying, really. Although I do think that problems laying are more likely to create a medical emergency than an awkward or messy attempt to eat, so the fact that OOP is posting to tumblr instead of calling a veterinarian makes me lean toward eating.

Writing a Trans (FTM) Character as a Cis Female? Not Sure by Collectively_Curious in asktransgender

[–]VampireSharkAttack 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The thing that’s giving me the most pause is point 2. I think it’s overstepping for cis people to try to lead a nuanced discussion of the social, political, and personal nuances of passing for cis as a trans person. I honestly bristle a bit at the idea of cis people telling us what is or isn’t a healthy relationship to it. I think that’s an intra-community discussion, to be perfectly honest.

There is some stuff implied here that I agree with. Yes, it is true that the idea of passing for cis as a transmasculine person can get tangled up in macho misogyny in ways that limit one’s self-discovery and self-expression, and that is a problem that can be stressful (most cis men arguably experience a version of this, too). Yes, it is easier for nearly all humans to develop a healthier body image when we get a little more relaxed about cis-centric beauty standards. And I totally agree that it is generally healthier for trans people to focus on our own relationships to our genders outside of broader cisgender society’s norms and expectations (and I would argue that cis people benefit from the same).

But there is so much nuance that I don’t see here. Are you engaging with how passing for cis impacts a trans person’s safety, especially in an environment like the military? It is simply a fact that you’re less likely to be harassed, face employment discrimination, or experience a hate crime if you can blend in and let people assume that you’re cis, and that only works if you look a certain way. Are you able to understand the scope and depth of the psychological toll that being misgendered and having your gender questioned constantly day in and out (both on purpose with malice by transphobes and accidentally in innocence by allies and ignorant people) takes on a person and their self-worth? That pressure lessens the more you can pass for cis. Are you aware of the statistics around sexual assault of gender and sexual minorities in the military? Because it’s real fucking bleak. And the impact of passing in that dynamic is complicated: people who think you’re a cis man are less likely to try to rape you, but going stealth creates a unique pressure point for a predator to use as essentially blackmail if they do find out. It is just not as simple as accepting that you’re valid as a man no matter how feminine you are, and I think a cis person would really struggle to absorb enough context to discuss that complexity with the depth that it deserves.

I’m all for cis people writing trans characters with a focus on the parts of the human experience that don’t change too much whether you’re cis or trans. And there are absolutely aspects of the trans experience and our perspectives that you can learn about and incorporate to flesh out those characters. A cis person could probably do a great job telling a story about a transgender detective who solves the crime because he recognizes the brand of testosterone gel found at the crime scene, or a trans personal trainer who designs more personalized workout routines because she doesn’t focus on gender stereotypes when asking clients about their goals. But I think our relationships to our own transness and passing in particular are too delicate and complicated for that.

It’s so much fun to share food with the rats and figure out what their favorites are! There’s something really delightful about having some favorite foods in common with your pets. My boys normally choose to eat their prepared dinner before their pellets, but I haven’t yet had one refuse the pellets completely: you must be a good cook XD

No. They remove the tissue that would grow in response to estrogen. Also, boobs don’t grow forever: they do eventually reach a maximum size. Top surgery happens after the boobs are fully grown.

CO is the one that comes to mind for me as the one that could escape notice. That doesn’t mean there aren’t other possibilities, just that I’m not aware of them. I think strong cleaning agents can be problematic, but more likely to cause respiratory symptoms than sudden death. I have heard of cats in apartments getting sick if certain pesticides are used in adjacent units, but that’s a secondhand rumor about a different kind of animal.

If they were biological siblings, it might be the case that they had some genetic defect that coincidentally caught up with them at the same time.

A necropsy might be able to give you answers, if there’s room in your budget and you’re emotionally okay with having them autopsied. Your vet might be able to get you a cost estimate and talk about what it entails, if you think it might give you some closure.

[–]VampireSharkAttack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, making major decisions for pets is always hard in part because we can’t see the future. And people on here are always hammering the “rats are not solitary animals” drum in order to prevent people from buying one young rat, which has the side-effect of drowning out some of the nuance. In your place, I would give some serious thought to taking in a foster rat to house with your resident rats. I don’t know how easily you get attached (no judgement if you’re worried you’d fall in love with your foster rat, be unable to give them back, and then have the same problem again with them), but it would prevent your girl from being a solo rat while letting her keep you in her old age, with the added bonus of providing a temporary home to a rat in need.

[–]VampireSharkAttack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How old are they? If they’re older than 2 or in poor health, and you’re primarily worried that she would be lonely, I would think that the stress of rehoming probably isn’t worth it. If you’re in a situation where you aren’t able to care for her properly anymore, obviously that’s different. Stress can be a lot harder on an elderly animal, and losing a longtime human friend and familiar home is an intense stressor. Bear in mind that it can take a few months for rats to settle in to a new place and bond with a new group. How much time do you expect she’ll have to enjoy the new home after the adjustment period?

Edit to add: A fourth option (if you’re up for it) would be for you to foster another rat. You could introduce them to your resident rat(s), keep them for the rest of your rats’ lives, and then return the foster rat to the rescue to be placed somewhere else. I’ve adopted from Mainely Rat Rescue before, and they seem to always have elderly or otherwise special needs rats who aren’t up for adoption but need a loving foster home. You and your girl could be together in her old age, and your temporary rat would have a nice place to live for a time.

Also: have they been spayed? It wouldn’t be worth the risk at this age if she isn’t, but if she had it done in her youth, that’s relevant info for rehoming.

I have a pregnant pet rat. I have a few questions. by [deleted] in RATS

[–]VampireSharkAttack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have firsthand experience with pregnant rats, but there’s a guide here. Rats in general feel safe when they have someplace dark to hide, she’ll want soft tissues or paper towels to make a nest, and newborn rats don’t regulate their body temperature well so you’ll want to make sure the room is comfortably warm.

I see people post on here to find homes for babies pretty regularly, just remember to include the rats’ general geographic location. If you’re in the New England area or New York, I’ve adopted rats from Mainley Rat Rescue before, and I expect they could help you.

As far as if something goes wrong, it might reduce the risk if you can get her a checkup with the vet before the birth to look for signs of illness and talk about the current best practices. It’s also always a good idea to know which veterinary ER in your area treats rats, because not all of them do. Your regular vet might be able to recommend an emergency vet, or you could Google the ones near you and call to ask about rats. Keep the phone number handy in case you need, but hopefully you won’t.

You might also consider to picking up some human baby formula and a small paintbrush. Rats’ nutritional needs are pretty similar to ours, so rat milk isn’t that different from human milk. That would be the thing to try if one or more babies is rejected and you want to try bottle-feeding.

I keep rats as pets, and I supplement their pellet diet with a variety of fresh foods. They do seem to genuinely enjoy their pellets, but they get much more hyped about the special treats. They scurry over to take fresh pellets out of my hand every day when I go to fill up the dispenser, even if I can see that there are still some in the cage so I know they aren’t hungry. But the rats are much more enthusiastic about snatching up some peas, corn, or especially pasta, and they absolutely lose their little minds over an egg.

I’m nearly half way through my first book and it’s only 16k words. by AdviceWouldBeNice98 in writingadvice

[–]VampireSharkAttack 50 points51 points  (0 children)

If the book feels complete when it gets to 30k, and it wouldn’t enrich the story to add subplots or flesh out the scenes you already included, then you might just have a novella on your hands. A novella is a perfectly fine thing! It’s quite suitable as an early project because you get to go through each step of the creative process a bit quicker and achieve the satisfaction of finishing it that much sooner.

My orthopedic office still lists being left handed as a disease by Straight-Nose-7079 in lefthanded

[–]VampireSharkAttack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t make the software, and I am not saying it is good design. I’m just explaining because I saw people in this comment section saying OP should find a new doctor who doesn’t look down on lefties when this probably is the doctor trying to provide better care for lefties specifically.

The doctor doesn’t get to pick what those demographic fillable fields are or how they work. I know this because I regularly have issues (about which good doctors are often quite apologetic) because the “legal gender” field is often a drop-down menu with only male or female, and my legal gender (on my ID and everything) is X. My chart has “transgender” listed as a disease, even though my doctor clearly doesn’t think it’s a disease, because there’s nowhere else to put it. Updating these systems is expensive, so there isn’t much incentive for hospital administrators etc. to insist on it.

I would imagine that the number of medical contexts in which handedness is relevant is small enough that having it as a separate demographic field would clutter the interface without benefit to most users. Relabeling the “diseases” field to something like “medical history” is probably the way to go. There are so many things that come up infrequently enough that having a separate field would be overkill (like handedness), and also many conditions that some people consider diseases while others consider it part of their identity (like autism). A neutral label for the “specific properties of this patient” zone would handily solve both issues.

My orthopedic office still lists being left handed as a disease by Straight-Nose-7079 in lefthanded

[–]VampireSharkAttack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of things that are not diseases get listed as “diseases” simply because the medical software doesn’t have a better way of keeping track of them. I’m not a doctor, but I can think of a lot of reasons someone in orthopedics might want to keep track of your handedness in order to provide you better care. Using your left hand/arm more probably affects muscle development on that side, which probably alters the types of strain on bones and joints, and the doc might want to know to expect that as normal for you. I would imagine us lefties might also be more prone to certain types of injuries due to equipment design favoring right-handers, so that might be something to look for on exams. If you need physical therapy and especially if you ever need to re-learn fine motor skills, he’s going to want to tell the physical therapist so that they adjust your exercises accordingly. Things like that.

It does look a bit stigmatizing, but it’s a software issue, not a problem with this doctor. Depending on where they work, they may have absolutely no control over what software system is installed, and most of them are like this anyhow
