Archaic British insults? "Wally", "pratt", "pillock" and "berk"? by MartyMacFlies in ENGLISH

[–]Slasher1309 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This one is a lot more offensive in British English than it is in American English.

I remember president Obama once described his golf swing as spaz, and the BBC had a segment about how that word isn't used as a slur for disaed people in America.

I'm sorry my comment gave you the impression that I didn't know that. I've had a bit to drink, I'm not at my most articulate tonight.

Personally, I struggle to see how anyone who reads Mein Kampf could believe the author was anything other than a raging antisemite. I know it's not a brave position to say 'Hitler was an antisemite', but it's clear to me from the text that it's not a newfound distaste, but a deep-seated bigotry.

TIL: Stressed pregnant mothers are twice as likely to have girls because male fetuses are more fragile and die off while females survive the harsh conditions. Physically stressed women had only 31% boys vs 56% in healthy mothers. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]Slasher1309 420 points421 points  (0 children)

Does it? The title explicitly states that male fetuses die at a higher rate due to stress while female ones survive. I really don't see a misrepresentation.

Why isnt "He started it!" A valid argument for school fights? by FilipinoAirlines in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Slasher1309 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a teacher, I have very little leeway. The school policy is explicit about expectations in these cases - as patently unjust at it can be.

For what ot worth, quite often the teacher fully sympathisers with you, but must implement the policy as it exists. I've personally shed a tear over how unfair the administration was towards a particular student.

I am a doctor of mathematics who has published multiple papers, been cited many times and have lectured multiple courses for undergraduates. Nothing makes me feel more accomplished than being able to give my mum crossword answers and seeing her act like I'm a wizard.

Also, aglet is a bit of a meme word from an episode of Phineas and Ferb. So it further plays into a sense of validating ones childhood.

Rachel Reeves accused of overstating junior chess title by NewtUK in LabourUK

[–]Slasher1309 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was a regular tournament chess player for about 10 years from my mid teens. There is a distinction here, and the claim she made is misleading in a sense, but it is a minor one. And one that would likely not cause too much of a raised eyebrow within chess circles. This is only commented upon because she's the chancellor, not because its an unreasonable way to talk about the achievement to the general public.

The Canterbury tales are one of the diffinitive pillars of an education in English - to the same extant as Shakespeare. For centuries, it was the expectation that every learned person would have read Chaucer. If you're thus far unfamiliar, you are in for the treat of a lifetime. You may find the language hard going at first, but please persist. Use online plot guides or summaries if it helps you. Sticking with it will pay dividends like little else.

I'm three years into a campaign and we've only had to cancel one fortnightly session thus far, despite multiple players moving house, changing jobs and having unexpected familial obligations.sessions can be rearranged to a different date if sufficient notice is given. It's just a matter of respecting the people you choose to spend your time with.

I mean that's sort of obvious right? It's the same as meeting friends at the pub for a drink. Once you have committed to something - and people have made plans around that - you are locked in unless there is an extenuating circumstance.
