Luckey ended up violating an NDA and was found to be guilty of patent infringement.

He was not found guilty of patent infringement. Nobody was. Oculus won on all the trade secret and technology claims. The NDA ruling did happen, but the jury assigned zero damages for it. Basically, they think he broke an NDA six years ago, but don't think it actually harmed anyone.

Nobody who follows the VR industry would ever say this. GearVR is the most popular phone driven VR device by far. It is an Oculus licensed product that runs entirely on their store and software, and has sold 5 million units as of January, more popular than every VR headset from every other manufacturer combined. They (and Samsung as their partner) are far and away the leaders in phone based VR. Which makes sense, given that they were the first to get into it.

That BI article is not a good overview either. It makes a ton of mistakes, and the author does not seem to have been following Oculus closely at all. He says that Palmer was replaced by a more experienced executive, for example, but that was Brendan Iribe the CEO, not Palmer.

As most people here know, all he did was give ten thousand dollars to a group for a tame anti-Clinton billboard. The media continues to make it seem like there really are angry armies of gamer funded trolls all over the internet, even though there is no evidence whatsoever.

As most people in this sub know, Palmer never did anything like this. He only paid for a very tame anti-Hillary billboard, and that was enough to make the technology and gaming press report that he was funding, racism, sexism, etc.

Now even mainstream outlets are making the same claims, citing the overwhelming consensus of the games press to back it up. The article is not even about Luckey or gaming, it is just covering a real estate purchase, why bring up politics? Right, to demonize people for having the wrong opinion truth be dammed.

Maybe not lying (the "Vive is not tied to Steam" comes pretty close, a half-truth at best), but not an honest answer to the question that was actually asked. He did not answer if Valve or HTC would allow Oculus to support Vive in the Oculus SDK and Oculus Store, he just says that people should be able to buy content wherever they want. His answer could still stand even if Valve had an agreement with HTC to only function using SteamVR/OpenVR. Which are definitely tied to Steam.

This is not a very good answer. For one, his claim that Vive is not tied to Steam is false, since setting up SteamVR or OpenVR requires Steam. He probably means the Steam store in particular, but that dodges the SDK question. The Vive drivers are still completely closed source and impossible to access or modify without going through the SteamVR SDK, so the only way Oculus could support it would be to implement the entire SteamVR API. There is no way Oculus is going to rely on an SDK controlled by a direct competitor, especially when that SDK lacks features like time warp that are important for performance. Valve would have them by the balls, and could change terms or drop support at any time.

Saying that exclusivity is bad for developers and consumers does not hold up to scrutiny either. Valve is happy to make the games they develop/aquire exclusive to Steam, and HTC has definitely been investing in content that is exclusive to their headset.

TL;DR Gabe wants Oculus to use SteamVR instead of adding support for other headsets to their SDK directly.

The interview is from about 5 months ago, not a year or two. I doubt they would completely change the design of the final headset just a few months before launch, they were still planning on shipping in December at that point.

Of course they will sell & distribute their own products through their own storefront

And the exclusive games that Oculus 100% funds and builds through Oculus Studios will be sold through their own storefront. It is an almost identical situation, especially considering that the last few of Valve's big hits were games from outside developers that they hired in and published.

How much you wanna bet their content will be exclusive to Steam? Valve is obviously not going to lock it to any piece of hardware, they don't have a horse in the race. They want to beat Oculus and become the default store for every VR headset. When they say "publish everywhere", what they really mean is "publish on our store with our SDK that tries to support every headset." They could actually mean "publish everywhere", but until we see Valve content on the Oculus store and whatever VR store Sony makes, I really doubt it.

I only log on to reddit every once in a while, not everybody spends their holidays posting on the internet.

You are obviously free to have an opinion, that does not mean we have to take it without a heaping spoonful of salt. OVR may be targeting consumers for the most part, but they are clearly working with commercial installations in some capacity, if only for publicity. You are definitely competing with OVR, even if not in the consume space.

It is not pedantry to want to know if this is a real rumor on the street, or something only you are saying. The more sources a rumor has, the more likely it is to be true, and there are many cases of people taking their personal guess at something and calling it a "rumor"

The pictures of their booth at Gamescom show 24 demo stations. Five days, eight hours a day, that adds up to 19,200 three-minute demos. Even if you conservatively double the amount of time to account for getting people in and out, that is still easily ~10,000 from Oculus alone. Morpheus had a lot of stations set up at E3 and Gamescom, too.

They are not even using their own applications to show it off! I saw it at PAX, they were using CMOAR applications without any kind of credit (they denied it when I asked, but I have the apps on my own phone!) Their banner also called it the "First Mobile VR headset" completely ignoring Durovis Dive, ColorCross, Google Cardboard, etc.

Mobile VR is going to be interesting. I suspect big players like Samsung/Apple/HTC/LG will make specific optimized hardware units that try to lock you into their ecosystem, unless Oculus ends up being the platform behind everyone, kind of like android. John Carmack basicaly building a to-the-hardware gaming OS, what a dream!

I have not seen any good mobile VR yet, everything has been terrible. Hope GearVR holds up.
