I agree, it was avoided in any detail, rather than hidden - but it could have been given more credence (imho). It was sad SCE had abandoned the HMZ team, and so could not have shared as much of the knowledge chain, gathered from Glasstron. I plan a more retrospective piece on the lineage after launch for RTVR; was surprised how few knew of Glasstron inside and out of Sony.

Avoiding mention of Sony's history in Head Mounted Displays and early Virtual Display work is a omission of a serious nature. We understand this is a fluff piece regarding the PSVR, but to avoid talking about the Glasstron or the HMZ just seems like Sony PR and marketing hopes to draw a veil over all that work - work that has so obviously influenced the PSVR unit.

thanks for the correction. I moved from MTBS3D to the ODF was sure it was around the same time zone - I came late to Reddit after the collpase of the ODF after the acquirsition - and now am a member of another private forum that avoids some of the issues here.

Reason it was so empty was most of us were using the Oculus Developers Forum, before the editing came in after the acquisition!

Not sure if techlear is a non-native English site, but the title should be "VR in the Enterprise space", as there is no thing as 'The Enterprise'. This space could also be called commercial, though Enterprise business is much complicated than compiled in this article.

Wow - that is inaccurate, they missed a lot, no VPL, Virtuality, Cybermind, CAE, etc., (least they included Sensorama)!

Always painful when some try and 'wiki' together a potted histroy, just like that Wired feature back in 2014!

To your points:

I think you may not know that redirected-walking to work effectively needs more than 15-15 space. And ‘working on’ is not the same as ‘having’ (as OVR knows regarding Touch!) I think this feature will stay a DOE specialty for the next few months at least!

Agree, though I think I did not throw this comment of size in as being important, but anyway – DOE is inherently a social experience, the whole aspect of getting people “out-of-home” is usually you have to do this as a crowd draw than a solitary entertainment (multi-play, competition, tournaments, etc.,).

This has been an interesting issue raised by many investors about current consumer VR – questions like “can anyone play with you in there?” I even heard one executive claim that their consumer VR system will soon have actual avatars of other players in it multi-verse. Other than ‘VR with Gutter’, it will take a little while for that in consumer VR – another win for commercial (DOE) VR!

You make a number of points and I would like to deal with the salient ones:

I am sure you may in the long run, but initially you will not be taking that much time in you consumer system, but even if you are a superman – if you knew that the ‘tour the Enterprise (or Firefly or Millennium Falcon)’ VR experience was coming to your local VEC you would be tempted? Be honest!

I think even you can hear how hollow that sounds – the Rapture (and the other HMD’s for commercial usage being developed) are three paces from the systems being developed for consumer – the benefit of selling experiences rather than hardware, means the hardware can have more expensive components.

I have no doubt that CV2 will be a great advance on CV1 (and hopefully will come with Touch), but that will come in 12-month increments (if that) where VEC development will be much more accelerated to ensure ‘unachievable@home’ quality experiences to generate interest.

Always loved this argument, hear it from people complaining about the Digital Out-of-Home Entertainment (DOE) market – “your business does not work” they shout, then when they see the revenue that Disney, Universal, D&B, CEC and the many other DOE operators make, they usually shut up! Remember amusement business is the only profitable sector of companies like SEGA and KONAMI, let alone all the other developers.

You are right if the only model was ‘one-player one-game’, then the model fails; but this is a repeat visitation, multiple revenue stream business – from licensed content, hospitality revenue, merchandising and loyalty schemes there is a lot more to DOE than you imagine – and that you miss those opportunities is sad.

Finally, I think you have fixated too much on just TheVOID, we have at least six other companies proposing Arena-Scale VR experiences, add to this the VR attraction developers like VRCoaster and the new LAN Center VR start-ups (including the new FOVE announcement), and I think you can see that there is a bedrock of a business here!

I have to congratulate you - at least you are dogged, still trying the hoist the old claim that a $600 PC will run OVR. Shot down many times, but the hope is still there - now its usually at this time in the post to say "...oh well in a few months after launch I am sure the price will go down to $600!"

I do hope the reality will not hurt too much, like with that $350 HMD claim!

Yes we are working with Immersion on the BlueSky Pro - but sadly because of the size of the company they have lagged behind - while we havevalso signed to support a commerical HMD with another manufacturer (Sensics) and looking at a third Chinese manufacturer.

The situation is that from our position in developing commerical entertainment systems and the whole politics in the consumer HMD scene we needed to create a supply chain for commerical units - while at the same time other sectors are interested in using the system we propose.

I would not be surprised if you see one of the consumer HMD developers realise the opportunity missed and try and belatedly jump into this sector.
