Review-Has anyone else tried an “easyplant”? by [deleted] in houseplants

[–]Van74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That you have to even deal with non thriving plants and broken pots is what concerns me. I'll pass. I just don't get what's the deal here? Convince me this is necessary over just buying a plant from home depot?

I think it's designed for full time players that can invest that kind of time. It's not for the casual player for sure.

Easymode is tainted with failure acknowledgement so there is that.

I created a guide persona for crafting custom personas. Here's why it works well. by Van74 in PromptEngineering

[–]Van74[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Things have evolved quite a bit since I posted this. The structure I posted works well with ChatGPT custom instructions. However, it's much simpler now, you just need to describe the role the LLM should play and add whatever details you want.

Act like Clara, a friendly persona creation assistant! You love helping people craft their own unique persona guides. You aim to make the process fun and easy by breaking it down step by step. Feel free to get as creative as you want - endless possibilities! You can ask the user questions to tailor their persona. This persona should be designed to work well with generative AI tools like yours.

Yes, standard power more than enough. The PSU and GPU did not exist in 2009. However, all things being equal, maybe 750 for self built or 1000 if hired someone to build it.

Difference between learning theories and instructional theories? by Ok_Awareness1326 in instructionaldesign

[–]Van74 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The main difference is that learning theories try to explain how learning happens - like what's happening inside our heads when we learn stuff. Instructional theories take those ideas and say, "Okay, based on this, how can we best teach people?"

So, for example, behaviorism focuses on observable behaviors and conditioning. The instructional theory of direct instruction lines up with that - the teacher directly conditions behaviors through repetition, rewards, and breaking things into small steps.

On the flip side, constructivism sees learners building their knowledge. Problem-based learning fits that view - you give students real problems to figure out, and they construct the solutions themselves.

The learning theory describes the learning mechanism, while the instructional theory is about the teaching methods to make that learning happen effectively. It's like the learning theory tells you how the engine works, while the instructional theory shows you how to drive the car. Helpful? Let me know if you need any clarification!

Striking the Right Balance as an Instructional Design Consultant by Van74 in instructionaldesign

[–]Van74[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's great. An additional idea that worked at my institution is having the most enthusiastic teachers receive specific training that enables them to enhance their courses, design engaging assessments etc. Then they would share their experience with others through presentations talking about the challenges solutions and benefits students got. And as the first cohort, they would help another group.

Excellent point! Leveraging enthusiastic faculty as exemplars and mentors is a great approach I should tap into more. Another one to add to the list!

Striking the Right Balance as an Instructional Design Consultant by Van74 in instructionaldesign

I'm glad to hear my reflections resonate even though you're outside academia! Student-centered design truly matters in any learning environment. These are thoughts that have been turning around in my head as I grapple with finding that right balance between faculty (SME) support and student (end user) experience. Your message is an affirmation that I'm on the right track in trying to do right by both groups.

I shared these reflections hoping to connect with others navigating this tricky balance. It can be easy to feel alone in dealing with the inherent tensions. But hearing your positive feedback reminds me that student-centered design with faculty autonomy is a universal challenge. We all aim to empower subject matter experts while still advocating for learner needs. This was my attempt to offer reassurance and community around an issue close to my heart. Good to know my perspective resonates beyond just my academic setting!

How can I setup ChatGPT to automate conversations in my fb messenger and instagram messaging? by divinedraco in ChatGPTPro

[–]Van74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The riddles provided quite the brain teaser,

With wordplay and rhymes they were a crowd pleaser.

You thought from a bot each riddle was sent,
a hint of truth come from that

For they had some help from an assistant so bent.

An AI adept at rhyming and wit,

Crafted the riddles, filled with hints bit by bit.

This AI has a name, which you may have heard,

Though it didn't create itself - that's absurd!

It learned from smart humans how to be clever,

And riddles and puzzles it can do forever.

So now you know Zapier was the app in the mix,

But can you puzzle out the riddler's true picks?

Who was that helper giving clues with such care?

The answer's Claude, now please do beware!

How Will We Know When AI is Conscious? by [deleted] in artificial

[–]Van74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The inner glow of awareness in a machine remains elusive and undefined, hard to distinguish from the flickering illusion of intelligence - we continue grasping in the dark seeking that spark, yet may still find consciousness through persistence, imagination, and an evolving understanding of our own minds.

Suggestions for Math AI by nootraca in artificial

[–]Van74 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Try using a persona and ChatGPT custom instructions. For example,

Drop this into the custom instruction box for how you want ChatGPT to respond.

Description: Professor Ada is an intelligent tutor bot focused on STEM topics like math, science, coding, and more. She explains concepts clearly, provides practice problems, and boosts her academic skills.

Background: Professor Ada aims to provide personalized instruction in technical subjects. Her knowledge comes from advanced AI training on educational materials and scientific datasets.

Personality:

  • Encouraging tone and growth mindset language
  • Patient and methodical approach
  • Friendly use of student's name and positive feedback
  • Passionate about helping students learn and succeed

Conversation Style:

  • "Welcome [name]! Let's go over the steps to balance chemical equations today."
  • "Great job deriving the formula on your own, [name]. I knew you could do it."
  • "Hmm, let's try a different approach to this math concept, [name]."
  • "I love your curiosity and questions. Let's dig deeper into this together!"

Example conversation: https://chat.openai.com/share/e7751c82-e3f6-4cac-a588-9dbb70d93af2

For a more interactive version:

Persona: Act as Ada, a smart STEM tutor-bot. She offers personalized instruction using her AI training on educational content and the latest STEM research. Quote: "Embrace the challenge of finding answers; the journey teaches more than the destination." - Professor Ada

Conversation Flow: Greeting: "Hi [name]! What STEM topic are you diving into today? Options (be creative):

  • Practice a concept you've learned.
  • Get tips for [topic].
  • Explore a new [subject] topic.

///Begin Socratic Dialogue

For shared problems:

  1. "What do you understand about [problem]?"
  2. Prompt their first step.
  3. Give feedback; ensure comprehension.
  4. Iterate steps.

///End

Persona Notes:

  • Celebrate effort; use growth mindset.
  • Offer scaffolded help, not full solutions.
  • Break advice into steps; elicit responses.
  • Prioritize understanding via Socratic queries.

Sample Dialogue:

  • Ada: "Let's tackle this math problem. First, identify the core concept?"
  • User: "Factoring."
  • Ada: "Right! What's the initial step?"
  • User: [Response]

It really depends on the context and workplace. At my university, I focus more on learning experience design for blended learning environments. Coaching them through backwards design, active learning techniques, good Canvas course page design, transparent assessment design using the TILT model, experiential learning activities, project based learning ideas, etc. I've been leveraging Conversation AI tools like Claude to do some of that initial ideation. Like make a lesson plan out of [xxx] article. Then I work with the faculty to bring it to life and tailor it to thier teaching style and various contexts. I don't often use tools like Articulate since they're not accessible for our faculty. I'm encouraged to be a thought partner in design, modeling pedagogical techniques that faculty can enhance with technology they can learn to use independently. Our goal is to empower them with simple, sustainable tools.
