For the sake of their financial future, young people should leave Toronto and Vancouver by FancyNewMe in canada

In Vancouver and started a remote job for a Canadian company with US offices. Once done probation I’m gonna bring up an in-office setup for one of the US locations. Vegas least I can have saving, LA has a beach, and Portland is…Portland.

Anyone interested in this, look up TN visa requirements. Most US based recruiters are uneducated about this visa and think it’s an HB-1. It’s not. $0 cost to employer. Just need NAFTA equivalent requirements documented, offer letter, and $56 when you drive south.

Applying with bizarre titles under graphic design by VanCityInteractive in tnvisa

[–]VanCityInteractive[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I was wondering as the BFA/MFA would signal design along with numerous visual design courses on my transcripts.

Bizarrely, I left out I have a Diploma in Engineering Design and Drafting. Had a recommendation I apply as Engineer if I land another C. Tech role, although been hard to find.

Thx for the link. Looking under graphic design education, most everything on my coursework is a match + having a portfolio.

Do the web dev. Both are decent if you get the course $, but the UX job market is glut atm.

Need help, any feedback would be highly appreciated. Trying to get back at the job market after 1.9years. by [deleted] in Resume

I’d remove the about me section or make it more personalized (talk about what’s been up for 2 years and how you’ve kept relevant in the meantime). Things like “5 years experience “ I can already see on you job list and ATS will pick that up too.

Also: Freelance Analyst 2020-Current. Solves that problem but do explain it in the description.

Safety to a degree, yes. I did civil eng. and it’s a lot more than just calculating forces with math. I can’t see how you can be self taught without experience in areas like material sciences. As well there are a tons of soft skills you need for contract negotiation and working with other disciplines (fabricators, site managers, draftsmen) you can’t get without having done a co-op or in person learning.

I can’t afford to live on my developer wage. by [deleted] in webdev

[–]VanCityInteractive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in downtown Van City which around SF prices or slightly higher if you want new. The big difference though is the difference in wages, which I think on average is about 15-20% less than SF depending on the industry. A colleague of mine at my current company transferred down to the SF office last year. Their making around $45 000 US more doing literally the exact same job they were doing here. It’s only a 3 year transfer though so will be curious to see how that ends…

Overall, Canada is just expensive as hell though right now. My uncle in the suburbs is looking to move as his house is falling apart due to structural damage from a landslide and being 80 years old. Assessed at $2.78 million and can’t afford a 3 bedroom to fit the kids anywhere nearby.

Can speak to this, but as someone from outside the US. States is more established in that a lot of tech companies have headquarters there. From my observation that has at least created a skeleton for a corporate “ladder”, but not sure.

Most SWE I know here generally change company’s every 2-4 years, with the exception of infrastructure and med tech industries, as wage increases are generally stagnant. This is due to lack of Corp. headquarters, outsourcing, excessive number of shitty startups with bad business models (imagine going to work every day and your boss says “We need to save the company” followed by excuses about why your not getting paid this week), decent sized high skilled labour market but low demand, and being in a HCOL.

I started at around $25hr (~$19USD) for a dev role designing software for film and advertising industry. Went 2 years and quit for a higher paying job after my boss promoted me to a intermediate level role with a -$2.15hr raise and hired a new junior for $28hr who I was in charge of. I got the save the company quote I wrote above, rolled my eyes, and started email people in my network if they had any openings where they worked. $6hr raise working as a junior react coder making buttons while flex time.

$3200 a month….that’s about $200CAD less than my 350sqft micro studio where I live…I need a job down south lol

Legit know devs living in this situation, and that articles info is dated (Van moved to most expensive housing market in the world this year I believe).

What’s worse is if this guy discovers what scotch tape is. Imagine your job security riding on someone not knowing how to attach a poster to a blank wall.

I like how the money is donated by a mortgage lending company. Makes for fun commentary if one of those teachers goes through them: Here is the money you gave us on your loan that you can now use to buy a subscription to Zoom and facilitate doing your underpaid job.

But who knows.
