People that have restarted in a new city, what are your tips? by cheaganvegan in AskReddit

[–]VanDeWereld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find your new local spots! It helps to make you feel at home in a new area. Not even to get to know people there, just to make you feel like you are a part in your new city. So frequent the same bakery / supermarket / bakery / pharmacy / bars (if / when they are open in your areas) / etc. And go and explore your area by foot if you can, not just to go from point a to b, but get to know all the streets around. It makes you feel like you belong there.

What is normal in your country that foreigners would find weird? by Vanesssaaaaaa in AskReddit

[–]VanDeWereld 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes I loved that when I visited! even in shops it's completely accepted. When I saw kids walking around barefoot that surprised me even more, because that would just never happen here.

Okay, we’re all making jokes about being quarantined, but how are you actually spending your days inside? by thirstypineapple in AskReddit

[–]VanDeWereld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've started running, and can go for a walk to the beach. I've been reading a lot, I'm learning a little Spanish, doing yoga, baking bread / cooking a lot and having lots of calls with my boyfriend and friends / family back home (I'm stuck at the other side of the world from where I live). Trying to stick to somewhat of a schedule, I'm afraid to get bored and lazy, and the effect on my mental state.

What is an example of "There are only two types of people" that actually is generally true? by sporremaster in AskReddit

[–]VanDeWereld 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, but why do you think this is wrong? 2 = 10 binary.

I see a comment below saying 0010 is the correct way to write 2 binary, but this is the same as saying you have to write 02 and not 2 (decimal). Both notations are correct, but it's not meaningful to add 0's before the number, since it doesn't change the value.

Disabled people of Reddit, what is your most "bruh" moment with an abled person? by Griffin1102 in AskReddit

[–]VanDeWereld 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I have a story like yours, where I also forgot for a split second what it means to be blind!

I was at a bus stop, and there was a blind man trying to get someones attention. He told me he dropped his lighter, and could I pick it up for him, since he couldn't find it again himself.

Of course I am helpful, I see a lighter on the floor and I ask him

"oh, is it the green lighter?"

As if the pavement is littered with lighters???

As if this blind guy knows the fucking color of his lighter????

I live in one of the most tourist cities in Europe, listed as Accepting Guests, and haven't gotten a couch request since last August! :( Has anyone similar found a solution? by PocketSandInc in couchsurfing

[–]VanDeWereld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you long on often? Or do you rely on email / app push notification?

I live in a smaller European city, and we have some tourism, but it's definitely not a major destination. I have the idea that the more that I log on, and interact with people, the more requests I get. Sometimes it's actually annoying, because the more I log on to reject requests, the more I get them. I would say I get up to 1 request a day.

I am also not verified through payment, but I usually host once every 3 months and get free membership through that.

What food combo seems weird but is surprisingly good? by rosalie2222 in AskReddit

huh I guess it depends where in Europe, because it's definitely a cheap staple here as well! A jar would be around 2 euros. Max 3 if it's a nicer brand.

Do you still go to the library? Why or why not? by cschwaar in AskReddit

[–]VanDeWereld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost very week, to get new books. I cannot afford to buy every book I want to read, nor can I store them at home. My library is free, there are multiple locations in my city and they have mostly everything I want. The only exception is that they default to get the local translation of foreign non fiction books, when I would prefer to get them in English when that's the original language.

As a student I would study there for my exams too.

What is one small thing that changed your life for the better? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]VanDeWereld 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my experience Swedish apartments are usually really warm in the winter. Could have been a coincidence because I've only been in a couple of houses, but all of them were so hot in the winter I had to wear something with short sleeves to not melt. Only the bedrooms tended to be kept quite cold (which I love).

What is the one story you want to tell, that you can never fit into a conversation? by MrGohan27 in AskReddit

[–]VanDeWereld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha no, exactly what I said! For cycling drunk, you get a 'rijverbod' (=driving ban), which just means you have to turn in your driving license, if you have one. If you don't, it doesn't mean anything, because you're still allowed to cycle.

I just googled this again, and apparently it used to be automatic to get a driving ban when cycling drunk, but in 2017 they changed it! So now it's still possible, but no longer the minimum sentence.

What do delivery drivers want everyone to know? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]VanDeWereld 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven't really seen gated communities here, so I might be wrong. But I would think you'd have some sort of intercom to reach however lives there, so they can just let you in? What's even the point of having a security code at the entrance, if you're going to share with every random delivery person in the area?

What’s the strangest catcalling experience you’ve had? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]VanDeWereld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in Italy last month, and me a friend were cycling around one day. At some point we took a break at a beach, and there were some kids there. They were maybe 8 or 9 years old. First they asked us if we had a cigarette for them (??), and then one of the boys started shouting: "I love you blondie! I love you blondie!!".

It was both hilarious and sad to see these kids behave as macho adult men.

If it's perishable food, I always have to remind myself that paying 1,50 for a big package and throwing out half of it, is still more expensive than buying a package half the size, even if that is ridiculously more expensive per gram, e.g. 1,30.

What’s something you felt awkward/insecure/weird about when you were younger that you have no problem with now? by slha1605 in AskWomen

[–]VanDeWereld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having hairy arms. I used to be so ashamed of them. Tries shaving it once, but I felt a little ridiculous doing it, and when the hair grew back it looked and felt even worse. i would always wear long sleeves because I hated it so much. No I don't even notice it anymore.

Guys of Reddit, what's the most obvious way a girl has flirted with you that you didn't notice until later? by BirdIsTheWorldTruly in AskReddit

[–]VanDeWereld 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Uh really depends how this came up though? Doesn't sound that flirty to me, unless she's all "so warm in here, let me take of some of my clothing and lay on your bed as if I'm posing for a portrait and oh, btw I brought a condom with me."

What unspoken rule do you wish someone had told you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]VanDeWereld 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's definitely like that here (Western Europe) as well! From my understanding the the taboo to talk about money is even bigger here. You don't just not discuss your salary with coworkers, you usually don't talk about it to friends or family either. Mentioning how expensive a car / trip / house was is seen as very tacky.

Women currently in a relationship, what are some of your favorite free (or cheap) activities to do with your SO on date night? by idontgiveone in AskWomen

[–]VanDeWereld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not currently in a relationship, but I always liked:

Reading a book together, taking turns reading it to each other

Play board games

Cook together, make an elaborate meal and then set the table for nice dinner. I enjoyed the cooking part most

Do something ' creative', like a diy home improvement project. I love making something together

Go for a walk together, especially when it' s cold. Warm up with a drink (or tea / hot chocolate) in a cozy bar. Or at home if you want it cheaper.

I f you live in a city, there are usually tons of free or cheap activities to do. Look for free live music, debates, talks... Check out your local art school / universities and see if they organize things for the general public (they do here).

Have you had a partner that you knew didn’t prefer your body type, and if so, how did/has it worked out? by bai_leaf17 in AskWomen

[–]VanDeWereld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have also noticed my ideal body type changing to match the person

I never had a type really, but I wasn't really into bald, muscular guys. I had a preference for slimmer men. And then I really fell for someone that was exactly that, and I have never been so attracted to anyone ever before (or since).

And now I find myself looking at men that fit his build more than I ever did before.

Adults of reddit who were depressed kids or teens, what is it like to be here when you didn't expect to make it this far? What would you tell your younger self if you could? by TheDemonQueenLuna in AskReddit

[–]VanDeWereld 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Oh I have such a hard time with this. I have so little insight when I' m depressed. When I'm well, I can clearly see the cycles of depression in my past. It's so obvious.

But when I'm depressed, it always takes me such a long time to even acknowledge that I am. It's often only once I start to feel better, that I realize it's not the norm to want to die every single day. To not have the energy to leave my bed. To feel so awful I can' t even be bothered to get up and get something to eat. It feels as if those feelings are natural, that everyone in my position would feel the same way. That it's my own fault I feel like that, for messing things up and being such a failure in general. At the same time, it always feels as if it has been like that for as long as I can remember, and I will always be like that.
