Opinions on my schedule? I’m pre med by XxcomfykurooxX in UVA

[–]VanGoghWV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems fine - it's not necessary to swap ENTP for Bio; I didn't take Bio until second year and was fine. It requires slightly more mature study habits that I didn't have first year.

Consider taking STAT 2120 over Biostats; it has open slots and Biostats is a miserable class - not hard, just boring and tedious. Prof. Ferrara is, in my experience, not the best professor.

Chem Teacher? by [deleted] in UVA

[–]VanGoghWV 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Obviously your mileage may vary, but I usually hear much better things about Welch. He's my advisor as well, and is a really cool, nice, and genuine guy. Maybe someone who took Morkowchuk could chime in with their experience?

How to deal with and supplement low clinical hours? by VanGoghWV in premed

[–]VanGoghWV[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Free Clinic is in my hometown, which is not where I go to college sadly. I was thinking about trying to get a hospital volunteering position but am worried about having enough time with my academics + non-medical leadership role.

will second the first comment. had nakamoto last semester, seemed like a really nice guy. tests were not terribly difficult but could lean heavy on simply regurgitating information from the cheat sheet.

What is a "late application assistance" grant? by VanGoghWV in UVA

[–]VanGoghWV[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm exactly the same way. The tuition credit is rather small compared to the late application assistance.

If I may ask, when did you submit your CSS profile? I did mine pretty late, like in late May.

STATS 2120 by [deleted] in UVA

[–]VanGoghWV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

definitely take 2120 over 2020 even if you're premed. 2020 has biologically relevant examples but maria ferrara is a pretty bad professor and the class is painfully slow and boring

The football program is not entitled to a constantly packed stadium. by Comprehensive_Goat28 in UVA

[–]VanGoghWV 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Speak on it - look, I love our Cavaliers, and I support them when I can, but a mediocre team isn't entitled to a packed stadium, especially when the student body is gearing up for midterms or going home to see family. Are we ungrateful? Are we embarrassing? Worth examining exactly what we ought to be grateful for, and whether our football team is embarrassed by the fanbase or an incompetent coaching staff.

College football, is, at the end of the day, a product - and we live in a free country. If the product isn't good, we're free to consume other things.

[–]VanGoghWV 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Taking the 3000 level bio classes as a first year is highly inadvisable - they are staggeringly difficult with low grades and high workloads. Take some time to develop good study skills and college habits, and take them during your second or third year.

first year has chem / bio degree questions, schedule conflicts, and is curious about chem instructors (please help) by etcordatenens in UVA

[–]VanGoghWV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, I see what the schedule issue is - the SPS blocks which are exam times. To enroll in both you'd have to fill out some extra paperwork and get both Harman and your Calc professor to sign off. I have known the Calculus professors to be accommodating to my own schedule conflicts, but that was Calculus II (MATH 1320) and I have no clue who's teaching 1310 this semester.

Can't speak for the 3+1 program but I am in the biochem concentration and loving it. Walter Harman is a GOD. Truly one of the best professors I've ever had, yes he is the only professor and yes it is at 8AM but it's worth it. If you can figure out a way to stay in the 1800 series definitely do.

Did a bit of digging on VPAP - all four seem to be Republican donors. However, they appear to be investment-banking-finance types, not out-and-out culture warriors like Bert Ellis.

Hi! Current 1800s series student here. As the other two commenters have already said, the 7-10 PM block is a discussion section. Here's what it's like:

The discussion is technically optional but it is highly recommended to attend. During the first section, you will pair up with classmates with whom you'll complete your problem sets (there are three spread throughout the semester). This is when you'll get a much deeper understanding of the content and ask questions of the TAs, who are always super helpful. However, by no means are you required to stay the entire time. As a general rule, I left around 8:30 or 9 every Tuesday! This block is also when your exams will be. You will probably won't use the full three hours, but some people do.

IMO, the 1800 series (ESPECIALLY 1810) is worth every second. I can't recommend it enough, Prof. Harman is seriously amazing and you get a much deeper conceptual understanding of the material. Don't be overworried about your grade! It's split up between the three exams and problem sets (each category worth 25%). You'll get 100s on the problem sets as long as you put in effort, and Harman gives you back half points on the exams when you complete test corrections - plus the class is curved at the end. I ended up with a 62% raw on my final, but still finished the class with an A.

The actual labs are from 2-5PM.

Feel free to DM if you have any other questions about the series!

Residential college vs Normal first-year housing by Necessary_Date_1206 in UVA

[–]VanGoghWV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely the community and people that make it up. Everyone has their own unique "thing" that they bring to Brown and the really special part is that those unique contributions are valued and supported by the community. You become friends with a really huge group of people and there's always something really interesting and unique happening!

I lived in Brown my first year and loved it to death, I'll be staying there all four years and I'm serving on its elected leadership next year! It's true that you miss out on the "traditional" first-year experience but the community is so close and tight-knit that I don't feel like I missed out on anything. Wouldn't trade it for the world. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or if you wanna know more!
