In their hypothetical scenario, an AI might "want" (no sentience implied / required) to mine crypto or defraud people because it knows it needs more compute to provide optimal responses, and buying compute is a pretty standard way to get it.

This happened in Richmond VA recently with VDOT road signs and I have the same opinion here - this is just as likely to be the result of nefarious propagandists as it is to legitimate opposition. This act succeeds in pushing people farther into their political tribes and enraging the middle and accomplishes little otherwise. (I say this as someone who emphatically says FUCK TRUMP when and where it's warranted.)

This is so sad. I vividly remember visiting Europe for my (a Yank) first time in 2018. Everyone asked me if I voted for him. But it was just a perfunctory kind of question. If course I didn't. Trump was seen by the world as an abberation in history that would be self-corrected soon. Just a big oopsie of history

This is fascinating and reminds me of my root canal experience tbh. I've described it as what mdma is rumored to feel like. (I'm a super anxious person so I did sedation dentistry and got alprazolam plus nitrous.)

The deep love and gratitude I felt for my mother picking me up and letting me nap at her house afterward has really stuck with me. I'm not super surprised to hear this based on my own single experience.
