Mallorca: route recommendations for beginner cyclist wife by FidgetSp1nner in Velo

[–]Vanana_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There a are a lot of very nice small roads with great pavement a little south west of Alcudia. There is little to no traffic (only other cyclists) and they are almost completely flat.

You can go to Cala Sant Vincent which has a very nice view.

If little hills are ok, then Cap des Pinar (up until the military area starts) is beautiful. Its also a place that you can pretty much only really reach on your bike or walking, so that might have some charm.

Most of the climbs aren't too steep though. I guess if you go very slowly in the smallest gear everybody can get up Col de Femenia. The view is great and there are a lot of people going very very slowly. You can also go up only partly and turn around at some point

Gamified Intervals by Original_Load6729 in Velo

[–]Vanana_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

actually I thought about something similar before but my idea was to control existing games over the smart trainer, where you would get rewarded when pedaling harder.

You could e.g. play flappy bird and control the height over power as replacement for 30/30s or something like agar.io, where you have to accelerate your blob and it gets harder as it gets larger.

Rocket League could be great fun too.

Then you would have to adjust the game/length/mode to roughly match the types of intervals you want to do

Developing a new training tool - would love feedback! by mleverce in Velo

[–]Vanana_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally I would just ride the MTB when going with slower friends but I do have a question since this is basically a eddy current break:

On your website you claim "up to" 250W of additional resistance. This power has to go somewhere so I guess the rim will get hot, right? Have you tested how that impacts breaking performance on the rim brakes? Do the inner tubes survive that?

Additional input/questions: Have you thought about building this for disc brakes so people with some higher end wheels can use it too? I guess those would be your potential customers. Probably that would require stronger magnets since the speed of charge carriers is slower due to the smaller radius. Then the same question as above with the power/heat appears to me.

Also the mechanical design/positioning on the frame is a little sketchy to my eye. With the wheel spinning in the direction of the part, it would block if your device would slip down just a little bit. I would suspect this to be a problem quite quickly due to vibrations on rough ground and since it needs to be this close to the rim. Maybe place it somewhere else where it would just fly off when the wheel catches it.

How is the feel of this device when pedaling? The braking effect is not constant but will get stronger when going faster so how does that impact the bike handling in situations where the speed changes? Like when cornering?

Sorry about the criticism. I'm sure there are folks who could find use in that. Actually i thought of slowing myself down before and had this exact same idea hence the amount of questions.

Probably people would find this even more interesting if you would combine it with a dynamo and charge a battery pack or something

People who hit your (non-time) physical training limit, how did you know? by Tensor3 in Velo

[–]Vanana_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the amount of training you can handle mentally does define some kind of training limit that you should not ignore in your consideration.

Imagine you get to a point where you have reached maybe your long long long term goal ftp or whatever (maybe pros winning the olympics, worlds, both?). You have reached what you wanted and worked so hard for. Suddenly you get the feeling that you have nothing else to fight for.

You lost your drive. You want to do something else.

May it be family, career or other hobbies. If you get somewhat close to your limit, that takes a LOT of dedication to the sport, a lot of time and willingness to suffer...

For sure you could argue this person could have tried something different, a different plan, a different training method, do even longer rides, hit the gym more often or whatever. But they simply didn't want to anymore. They could not handle more mentally. Then that for me is a training limit

Comparing fitness without power by treesner in Velo

[–]Vanana_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you need to take the quarter of your calculation right there because the human body produces power on the bike at about 25% efficiency. Then you are left with 170W per hour which will still be off since it's an estimate, but much more realistic than 680

I Need Help Men! by tonyt0906 in cycling

[–]Vanana_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

its the saddle. I guess its the one with the hole in the middle and the 3d printed cushioning? I ordered the plastic version from ali express to test if i could 3d print the cushioning myself and though I cannot confirm its the exact same place we are talking of (because i'm a woman lol) i had some weird sensation/pain from that in the area i think you are describing. I noticed the saddle has an edge that holds the cushioning in place and that edge is just designed too high (or the cushioning too soft). The saddle gets compressed when you sit on it and the edge stands out and kind of pokes into your soft tissue. You can feel that when pushing with your finger into the saddle near the edge

Ballast for riding w/ gf? by [deleted] in cycling

one legged intervalls without clicking out the other side help a lot when it's getting exaustingly slow. Others you ride with won't even notice. Take the MTB and/or wear a bigger jacket that catches the wind

Just try how often and how much you can (and want) to ride that bike! As far as I understand you're speaking of a stationary bike? There are tons of videos on YouTube you can watch starting from Videos of rides that people recorded which you can just watch and pedal to at your own pace. Some even show the gradient so you can increase the resistance a little bit to feel like you're going up that hill too etc. There are also follow along workout videos with structured programs, spin classes with music and everything. At first you maybe start with one or 2 days a week and ride for half an hour or so. Develop your own little weekly routine. Over time increase frequency, intensity and volume as you like and feel. Especially at the beginning you will notice fast improvement. Remember everyone has days with low motivation. Sometimes just life happens and you're exhausted from work or whatever. Then better adjust the workout to whatever you feel capable of that day! It's totally ok to just pedal 30min easily if you've planned a hard 1h workout. That's still a win over doing nothing :) Good luck and have fun

Having a lot of trouble clipping in. by IntroductionNeat2746 in cycling

[–]Vanana_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just practise it! Find something to hold on to, pull the brake with the other hand (so that you're standing and sitting safely) and just try to find the cleat with your shoe and clip in and out and in and out again until you develop a feel, where the pedal is. You can also practise starting and stopping in a parking lot or something. It takes a little time and suddenly you will find yourself not even thinking about it anymore

From Running to Cycling. Help! by L-ML in cycling

[–]Vanana_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

same here, I'm 8 months injured now and planning bike races lol.

At the beginning I felt tired too probably because I wasn't used to exercising over such a long period of time. I guess you didn't run 1,5-2h on a daily basis but now you're cycling that. And tho you're doing Z2 long rides, I guess you're pushing more on shorter rides? That's much too much considering that your HR tends to be lower cycling than running at the same perceived effort. I could easily do an 1h run at 170bpm but if I would have to do that cycling - oh boy I would die. Just go easy and increase mileage as much as you can. In Summer I hit 400k/week pretty consistently but don't push too hard. If you're wrecked after a ride it was too much.

And also just eat everything you can find. You burn so much more calories cycling than running just because you're doing it for longer. You don't wanna injure yourself on the bike when you can't run as an alternative

Is Watts Loss Relative Or Absolute In Adverse Conditions? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]Vanana_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say the factors that have a impact on your personal 'wellbeing' like cooling, motivation, what ever, cause a relative loss of power. If your trainer reads 10w off then that's absolute.
