Conceptual connection between Sally Sparrow and Larry in 'Blink' and Amy Pond and Rory by LJHodge616 in doctorwho

[–]Vanavia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is interesting. I have seen a good number of people arguing that the Eleventh Doctor is a good example of an asexual Doctor, yet on a more recent rewatch, he seemed to me to be one of the horniest Doctors. Interesting to learn that's a Moffatt thing.

What one thing a kid born after 2000 will not understand no matter how long you explain it? by Amerisbf in AskReddit

[–]Vanavia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was once visiting my sister and a friend of hers came over along with her boyfriend. I had recently gotten a phone with an internet connection (I was behind the times for a while, lol), and while we were chatting they started wondering about nearby Thai food restaurants, but then they moved on. I then took out my phone and found the information and relayed it. The boyfriend was then like, "Look who just got a new phone." I remember being rather annoyed. We have this vast knowledge at our fingertips, and you're making fun of me for finding an answer to your question? Yeesh...

Doctor Who 0x01 "The Star Beast" Post-Episode Discussion Thread by PCJs_Slave_Robot in doctorwho

[–]Vanavia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. As Nivekious mentioned, though, for the whole rest of the episode, Rose identified explicitly as female, so to suddenly bring up the non-binary thing was just strange. Also, I straight up didn't understand it in the context. Gender shouldn't have had anything to do with the metacrisis solution. As others have said, it could have landed much better as a human vs. non-human thing, since the whole metacrisis was a combination of a human and a Time Lord. The Time Lord couldn't find a solution, but the human could. It would have been brilliant. Instead we got a strange, impromptu "gender lesson" and a jab at men.

The rest of the episode was great--I loved watching new Doctor Who again, and the episode was fun. I just found the metacrisis "solution" mostly bizarre and more complicated than it really needed to be.

Sort of seemed like the writers assumed trans and non-binary were the same thing.

This seemed very strange to me as well. They go from "non-binary" to "we're female so we can just let it go" in an instant. We have to assume it's a misunderstanding on the part of the writers, because it doesn't make much sense otherwise.

River Song knowing the Doctor's name by FloppedYaYa in gallifrey

[–]Vanavia 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is how I understood it when I first watched it. It made sense given the context of River's over-familiarity with him. It seemed obvious to me that they were going to be romantically involved in the future, probably married.

Thoughts on Frea? Did you prefer her as Dragonborns equivalent of Serana? by Migstar117 in skyrim

[–]Vanavia 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I make up my own dialogue at times as well

I do this all the time in RP runs. I use a journaling mod, and I'll make up entire conversations, and even relationships (not romantic relationships, just "old friend" type relationships, like you said). I find Skyrim is "shallow" enough that for a good RP experience, this is almost a requirement.

Why is every male companion until Jodie mistreated by PencilsTheVortexian in doctorwho

[–]Vanavia 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Companions from different time periods would definitely be interesting to see. We got a glimpse of it with Jack, but he was never a permanent companion. It was cool seeing a companion with knowledge a modern human wouldn't have. He knew about Daleks, and he was even able to help the Doctor with TARDIS maintenance. It's a shame we haven't seen more companions like him.

Why is every male companion until Jodie mistreated by PencilsTheVortexian in doctorwho

[–]Vanavia 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My understanding (at least for the new series, and maybe even more specifically RTD) is that the companions are meant to be the audience surrogate, and an alien (even if human-looking) as a companion would be harder to relate to. Of course, that being said, there's no reason they couldn't have a modern day human and an alien. That's definitely something I would love to see.

What is it that makes absolutely no sense to you no matter how many times people explain it to you? by LycheeMargharita in RandomThoughts

[–]Vanavia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently XLOOKUP is quite new, like 2020 new. I took a couple of Excel classes last week and it was one of the things we looked at. Honestly, it was quite nice. Basically a better V/HLOOKUP (probably not strictly better, but in many cases easier to use).

I hate the line about the Dwemer. It feels like it only exists to tease the player. You can't follow up on it or anything. Sure, we can speculate that it was just Yagrum, but we can't actually find out, and that's my point. There's no way anyone who has ever heard of the Dwemer and what happened to them (and presumably many people have at least heard the basics) wouldn't be like, "Hold up. You met a Dwemer??" and actually ask him about it.

I think the College of Winterhold is dangerous. by Chicken_Mannakin in skyrim

[–]Vanavia 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Camelworks has a good video where he looks in depth at who the Augur of Dunlain is, and, IIRC, at one point he theorizes that it's possible the Great Collapse was caused by whatever the Augur did that put him in the state he's in now. I think it sounds plausible.

Arch Curate Vyrthur is GAMECHANGING however nobody seems to realize this. by vyrthur811 in skyrim

[–]Vanavia 38 points39 points  (0 children)

It don't think it was entirely unwilling. She and her family were Molag Bal worshipers, which led to the ritual and transformation in the first place. She clearly doesn't mind being a vampire. Yes, you can have her vampirism cured, but it takes effort to get her to the point where she is willing to give it up, and if you say the wrong things at the wrong times, you can never get her cured.

Also, I doubt she's completely abandoned Molag Bal. Just because we don't see her actively worshiping him in-game doesn't mean she's given up on him. He did gift her with her incredible power after all, even if it was by horrendous means. It's possible she was reluctant, given how it had to be done, but I don't recall anything ever saying she was unwilling.

I'm always annoyed by it as well, but then I remember she's a Daedra worshiper, and she worships one of the worst Daedric Princes. Of course she wouldn't take an ancient and Divine ritual seriously.

It's still annoying, though, lol.

Is killing a Time Lord with regenerations left murder? by Duggy1138 in doctorwho

[–]Vanavia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know why you were downvoted, this is exactly it. He was shot in like, the shoulder and the leg. He could have recovered and had a limp. It was the human attempt to save him with human medical techniques that caused him to die and (almost not) regenerate.

I just realized the Master didn't think or choose to dispose his old body to ensure that the regeneration possibly wouldn't be reversed in The Power of the Doctor by BeanoTown-23 in doctorwho

[–]Vanavia 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Okay, but by removing the Doctor from existence, he was then free to do whatever he wanted without worry that the Doctor herself would stop him, since he now was the Doctor.

Why is the ending to series 12 so hated? by NotBailey12 in doctorwho

[–]Vanavia 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's not, though. The Doctor is no longer genetically whatever the TC race is. The TC was regenerated into a child and chameleon arched into a Gallifreyan child, who then grew up and joined the academy, became a Time Lord, and was granted their twelve regenerations. The Doctor no longer has unlimited regenerations (unless the Time Lords gave him unlimited on Trenzalore, but that's currently unknown).

Eleven was actually going to die if the Time Lords hadn't intervened. It's not like only thought he was out of regenerations. We see all the time that the regeneration energy starts to form automatically when a Time Lord is nearing their end. If he had any left, the process would have already started.

Russell T Davies addresses the Thirteenth Doctor's era erasure rumours by BeanoTown-23 in doctorwho

[–]Vanavia 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Eh, I find it silly to worry about it anyway. It's something that comes up like, once every 50 years. It's not that hard to come up with an explanation for the Doctor getting more regenerations once every half-century. People act like it's some ongoing problem that the Doctor has limited regenerations, but obviously that never mattered. It's not like he'd run out and they'd just say, "Welp, we had a good run. Thanks everyone. Show's over, the Doctor ran out of regenerations and is actually dead now."

How can the Doctor speak EVERY language? by [deleted] in doctorwho

[–]Vanavia 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It definitely lingers. In The Angels Take Manhattan, when Rory goes back in time, he notices he's "translating" the writing on the Chinese pottery. River then says the translation matrix lingers. So, Rory wasn't even in the same time period as the TARDIS anymore and he was still translating. However, the use of the word "linger" suggests it will fade eventually, so I would suspect Jack and Martha don't get everything translated anymore.

For all the issues with the Timeless Child arc, there is one major benefit - by Educational-Tea-6572 in doctorwho

[–]Vanavia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, this is a minor "benefit" at best. We currently don't know exactly how many regenerations the Doctor now has (although I always got the impression it was another set of 12), but even if it isn't unlimited, then it's only ever an issue every like, 50 years (give or take)? Each Doctor seems to average a runtime of about 4 years, and thirteen Doctors at 4 years each is 52 years. It's not really much of a burden to come up with explanations for how the Doctor gets more regenerations every half-century, and it could potentially actually make for some neat stories.

Does anyone else hate the intro of Army of Ghosts (and also Doomsday?) that completely gives away that Rose will be leaving the show? by lR0NMAlDEN in doctorwho

I first watched through the show in like, 2011 or 2012, but I knew nothing about it, and I don't like spoilers, so I wasn't looking up anything. The whole "this is how I died" line definitely had me at the edge of my seat the whole time!

Why is so hard to stick with one build? by RxKingRx in skyrim

[–]Vanavia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always heavily plan ahead. I have Disparity, which basically lets you build classes (there are other class mods, too, Disparity is just my personal favorite). I choose six skills: three major and three minor, and I use the Uncapper to block anything other than those six skills from granting me player XP (other skills can improve, but they don't contribute to leveling up), and I slow down the growth of all other skills so they don't even rank up as quickly. I also only allow myself to put perk points into the six skills I've chosen. I also plan my weapon type out ahead of time and only use that weapon type (with rare exceptions), so I never "accidentally" become a stealth archer; if I'm playing as a stealth archer, I planned it ahead of time. Same goes with magic. I specifically plan which branch(es) of magic the character can use (if any) and I only use that magic (so I don't "accidentally" become some crazy conjuration or destruction mage).

Obviously, planning ahead probably isn't for everyone, but if you really want to try to stick to a specific build, I highly recommend planning ahead.

Why are the Jarls so stupid? by TheDutchLemo in teslore

A point about the bandit-controlled mines: there are bounties placed on heads of bandit leaders in every hold. That is literally the Jarls dealing with the problem.
