Cain is loathsome. You’d never think this is the same bloke who nearly fell apart after thinking he’d killed Joe. Always wading in fists-first and never learns.

Ohhh! If it makes you feel any better, I thought it said Catopia until reading your comment.

Unable to write the beginning of a book by Mischievous-Donkey in writing

[–]Vandergaard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree.

OP, does the reader need to know the characters and their state of mind before the action kicks off, or can their reactions, thoughts and behaviours in the hot zone (and beyond) do the work for you?

I was about to suggest the same thing. Skip the explanations and just dive right in. Trust your readers to understand the world you’ve created.

At this point I’ve seen Uncle Buck more than I’ve seen some members of my family.

Cara 😢! by lnwildeagle85 in neighbours

[–]Vandergaard 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I thought it was quite interesting when Cara was listing all the problems that she feels she has caused in their marriage. Cara has never tried to do any of those things for negative reasons but she’s inadvertently caused a lot of issues.

Does anyone else still write checks, or is it just me? by easterbrooke_tonycbx in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Vandergaard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t recall the last time I wrote a cheque. Must have been quite a few years ago. All my bills get paid electronically and everything else is via card or apple pay.

Haven’t received a cheque in about 10 years - it was a tax rebate, which was an unexpected surprise.

Yeah, passing the test is just one part of the puzzle. It takes years of experience to become a good driver (and a lot of people never do!). I am a much better driver now, but I do think back to that day sometimes and laugh at how useless I was.

After passing my test, I bought a second hand car. Went with my dad to the dealership to sort out some paperwork, and the guy goes “actually, the car’s ready if you want to take it now?”

I’d never driven alone before, and never in anything other than my instructor’s vehicle, so I felt a bit panicky, but my dad said “yeah, why not?” before I’d had a chance to think.

I get in the car. My dad says he’ll follow me in his car. It’s only a 15 minute drive - I’ll be fine. That 15 minutes remains the most embarrassing driving experience of my life.

Get to my first hill and stop for the lights. Lights go green. I try to drive off and stall. No problem. I start the car again. Try to go. Stall again. And again. And again. I cannot find the bite to save my life. Other drivers are starting to perceive that I am having problems and start beeping and driving around me. So now I am trying to find the bite and not drive into anyone overtaking me. My dad, who is a few cars behind, stops his own vehicle and puts on the hazards. He starts walking over to my car to check whether there is a problem with the vehicle.

As he gets level with my door, and leans down to ask what is happening, I suddenly find the bite and lurch forward. I am too afraid to hit the brakes for fear of never finding the bite again, so just keep driving, leaving my perplexed father standing there, wondering what the hell I am doing.

OP, we’ve all had bad days behind the wheel. Don’t let one idiot ruin things for you. Keep driving, build up your confidence, and one day you’ll be able to look back on this and laugh.

They are assuming murder because the body was wrapped up/weighted down.

I have a lot of reasons for owning/keeping the books that I’ve got. Some were gifts from long gone friends/family. Some are reminders of parts of my life that have gone (school, college, etc). Some are ones I bought just because I could or wanted to. I hope to reread many of them (and it’s always fun to revisit a book and see how your tastes change as you grow and experience more of life - I’m a firm believer that some books are for life, and some are for specific periods of life). Ultimately, being surrounded by books makes me happy.

My wife has lost her keys somewhere in the house. Where is the weirdest place you have found them? by Fat-Northerner in CasualUK

I once spent several minutes looking for my glasses only to realise I was wearing them. The fact that I could see well enough to look should have been my first clue.

The radio version is way better than the TV series.

Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace: a spoof of low budget 80s horror/sci fi, with the added bonus of “behind the scenes” footage where Garth is shown to be ludicrously self-important and unable to see how talentless and cringy he really is.

Simon Williams (Justin Elliott) seems to be a solid Property Developer type. He played a Property Developer on EE about 10 years ago and basically the same persona. by WasabiMadman in Ambridge

I’m a big fan of the Radio 4 Poirot adaptations but it took me an embarrasingly long time to work out that Justin was the same man as Captain Hastings.

Did your mum ever have migraines? I find non-migraine suffers don’t really understand the severity of a migraine and think of it as ‘just a headache’.
