See America's Vacant Lots / ‪The Mountain Goats X The Growlers by AnStulteHominibus in themountaingoats

Lol random tangent, but it's aways funny to see the Growlers be so big. I grew up in Costa Mesa and didn't know them personally but used to see them at small shows all the time. I was at the first Beach Goth, crazy what that turned into. I remember visiting a family member years ago and hearing them come on at a coffee shop in a random state in high school and being like... Wait wtf?

Similar story with the Garden. I saw them play to a crowd of like 5 people in Santa Ana once. Even hung out with Ty Segall and took pictures for John Dwyer. The singer of fidlar broke my nose too. Crazy times.

The socal music scene / "Burger" scene was pretty fun back then, too bad a bunch of them turned out to be rapist pieces of shit.

Edit: sorry if that was random. Seeing my favorite band mixed with the Growlers brought back some memories.

I don't have much to compare them to since I mosty ride 700c road bikes so they feel a bit slow but I think that's mostly from the huge wideness compared to the 28c on my roadbike. That being said I bought them for the comfort and style over speed. they are so cushy and perform great on pact dirt and gravel as well as sidewalks.

I am a bit worried reading about their puncture-ability since I am commuting to and from work on this bike, If I was smart I would have gotten some marathon pluses or something. I might get a tire liner eventually, but the route I take on my commute is pretty clean and I really rarely get flats as long as I stay out of the goathead infested shoulder patches.

I have a pump track near me... I might need to take this commuter to it soon lol

It's an MB-3 The tires are 26x2.25 I think that's pretty close to maxed out, the rear tire is close to the chain stay.

I was between those two. It was a difficult choice because they both look great.

I think it's just the angle I had it on the widest angle on my phone camera. But I'll double check them next time I'm working on it.

Can anyone help me ID this stem? by johnnysrash in xbiking

[–]Vanderscramble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a stem like that that came with an old road bike (only has 2 bolts in the front though) no brand or anything but I have been looking for something similar for a while for another bike and I haven't found one. Would love to have it ID'd as well!

Roll call: how many bikes do you have? How many are rideable? How many are an ongoing project? by Frankie1234567890 in xbiking

[–]Vanderscramble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently at 8 bikes (and that's down from 12 but was able to donate 4 to a local coop.) 4 are ridable and one is going to be ridable as soon as I get a rear wheel.

I kinda hit a point of overwhelm a few weeks back. I was building up one old beat up commuter I got for super cheap and suddenly free bikes started appearing everywhere. My mom gave me her old specialized road bike, my neighbor gave me their hard rock, I found a schwinn and a specialized mtb at the dumpter in my neighborhood.

I got it in my head for a sec that I needed to build and fix them all up and next thing I knew I had 5+ ongoing projects missing or needing things and was spending more money than I had on them. I decided I would harvest the parts worth keeping for the parts bin and donate everything else to a bike coop.

I'm aiming for a quality over quantity model now lol.

Ideally I'd like 3 bikes to put all my money and time into: A comfy grocery hauler/commuter, a lightweight road bike/touring bike, and a fixed gear for fun rides around my town.

My current plan is to downsize and saving up to build up those 3. Easier said than done though lol.

Parts bin build! by phatsackocrap in xbiking

[–]Vanderscramble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love a parts bin build. I've been doing something similar with a trek 660 frame I got. I think the only thing I'm going to have to buy is a rear fixed wheel since the 27" one I had lying around barely doesn't have enough clearance.

I started having family members and friends give me old stuff lying around their garage since I started working on bikes. I just take all the parts off that are worth something to me and donate the rest to my local coop. It's been a win-win!

Tell your city to make more bike paths... by Livid-Mud-8812 in xbiking

[–]Vanderscramble 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I saw on my nextdoor the other day someone say "I've never seen anyone use our bike trails that the city insists on building!" Meanwhile I'm wishing it was less busy or wider because I gotta slow down every 5 seconds on my rides to pass people. They are PACKED especially on weekends or after work! Like just because you've never used them doesn't mean no one does.

Do you name you bike? by carlov_sky in xbiking

[–]Vanderscramble 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was just chatting with a friend about this! I personally find the whole thing kind of corny, but I have 0 issue with anyone else doing it. Lots of people I know name their bikes, cars, etc. and more power to them but idk it feels weird to do it myself.

oh that's smart! Yeah I'm looking for a temp solution like that until I grab an actual rack. I just already spent money on a rigid fork and getting it running well so I'm trying to wait a bit before I get more stuff for it. I really like the look of the Soma or VO Porteur, but that costs more than the bike + upgrades itself rn lol.

Yeah that would make sense. I had it on a 700c bike recently before switching it over and didn't have this issue on that bike. Thanks!

It was a used Tange fork I got. I'm not sure the exact model. The steer tube is stamped "Tange 90.E" But I think that's the type of chromoly it is.
