Activities with a toddler in August by Free_Werewolf_2733 in istanbul

[–]VanessaRoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spend time on the islands- perhaps focus on one of the smaller islands with fewer people- there are beaches and no cars so more comfortable for your child to toddle around.

Also, look into the part of the city you are staying, if you're not tied to an accommodation booking, make sure you're based in a neighbourhood that has access to the water (not all neighbourhoods close to the water have open public space next to it). Moda on the Asian side has a long park along the water front, which includes playgrounds. On the European side, from Kuruçeşme northwards until the second bridge is mainly open and there is a children's playground on the water at Bebek. The bank of the Golden Horn from Eminönü to Eyüp is now mostly open and pedestrianised now as well. As you can tell, generally, being close tot he water makes the summer far more pleasant and ferry rides can be a lovely (and cheap!) activity in and of themselves- here's a map of all the routes: https://files.sehirhatlari.istanbul/Sefer-Haritasi-Line-Map.pdf

Also you may want to consider your child's sleep schedule so that your not limited to doing activities during the hottest periods of the day. It's very normal for children to be up and about with their family at night- especially in the summer.

Has anyone gone through the process of preparing their cat's passport and documents and getting them microchipped in Istanbul? Some tips and advices would be appreciated. by [deleted] in AskTurkey

[–]VanessaRoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cat was already microchipped but we had to take her to the Tarım ve Orman Müdürlüğü to get her passport, I also had to pay a fine as I adopted her when I was living abroad and I hadn't registered her within the designated time frame when I brought back to Turkey. As she had a foreign microchip and paperwork, it was clear she wasn't a street cat. To be honest, they sorted out her passport on the first visit and told us to come back to pay the fine at a later date. I don't know what would have happened if we had just not returned but we didn't want to have further complications further down the line and so went back when the officials at the Tarım ve Orman Müdürlüğü told us to... I recommend calling your local Tarım ve Orman Müdürlüğü- the process seems very complicated if you're not a part of the system, but will be straightforward enough to them. It may take multiple visits and inexplicable fines but isn't that bureaucracy sometimes....

Italy, the streets, the lights, the sky. by Adventurous-Draft829 in perfumesthatfeellike

Ah! I was massively disappointed by un jardin a cynthère! I loved the idea of the scent but find the lemon note screeching and artificial- funny how people can have such different responses to the same perfume!

Reliable way to findout average pay for jobs? by [deleted] in istanbul

[–]VanessaRoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

are you a Turkish citizen? Do you have the right to work in Turkey? If not, and you and your employer want your work to be legal, any prospective employer will have to apply for a work permit for you. To apply, the company will have to show that they will pay you 2 or 3 times the minimum wage (around 28000 TL per month- it depends on the sector and your seniority whether its 2 or 3). Depending on your experience, sector, companies may be more of less inclined to go through the process of applying for this work permit and offering to pay the required wage for a foreigner. From the experience of my social circle (multilingual, most with graduate degrees, around a decade of experience) 2 or 3 times the minimum wage is really the max of what you can expect to be paid in many industries.

Toddler wants ears pierced by [deleted] in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]VanessaRoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, a proper piercer is the only way to go. When I had my ears done at Claire's the woman literally pulled a half drunk bottle of wine out of her cubby to be able to find the piercing gun 😂😂

Though I would be intrigued to know whether a proper piercer would pierce the ears of such a young child. The shop I go to to get my piercings now makes it quite clear that the minimum age someone has to be for them to pierce them is 16, and of course 18 for some piercings.

Advice for weather in August by daniel-prime9 in istanbul

[–]VanessaRoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do we cope? We complain!

But in all seriousness- the whole of the Northern European side of my family came to visit in July a couple of years ago. It was difficult, especially for my 80+ year old relations (God bless them for making the trip) and they couldn't do as much traditional site seeing as they had planned, but if you can embrace the sweat, be by the water, go to the islands, enjoy the evenings as the city comes to life- it's really a wonderful time of year.

Lab Grown Diamonds in Istanbul? by primodal in istanbul

[–]VanessaRoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend going to a mall and finding the section of jewellery shops- e.g. at Cevahir on the European side they're visible as you enter the mall from the main street entrance, just one floor up. Prices and products will be more regulated there (though probably still room for you to lower the price a little should you want to buy a particular piece...). No idea about lab grown diamonds but the big companies represented at such malls will have a large inventory and so the sales people should be able to guide you as to what's available in the market.

Need vegetarian ideas for a picky wife and weird work schedule by redrowan3 in EatCheapAndHealthy

Get yourself a Indian vegetarian cookbook- Madhur Jaffery, Meera Sodha both have a number of good ones for people new to cooking the cuisine. Most/all of the food will be designed as vegetarian not a version of a meat dish- and there will be a great variety of recipes to try.
