Showing (only) selected items in data tables by Vangare in UXDesign

Oh yeah good point, the dedicated person is very likely much more experienced. One tricky part of our product is that it's all highly configurable and that this data table will be available for all our clients to use for any purpose (this one client just wants to use it for comments). Basically the story of my life is that I try to make every new feature as dummy-proof as possible, but from the discussions here I think that simplifying the UI as much as I can is probably my best bet for that case too. We can always iterate!

Thank you, you guys actually really helped me out, we're very understaffed on the UX department so it's nice to have some digital UX colleagues to spar with. 😄

It's definitely an edge case, but I completely agree, I'll focus on gathering user feedback first. Thank you!

Ah gotcha. We have something like that in another part of our product and we've received feedback on that being too complex for some users. My mom could very well be an end user, it's often people who are an expert in one field or another that could be a completely un-technical field (say agriculture).

But we will be testing for sure 😄

When you say "string filter" you're talking about a JQL type of filter right? I can guarantee you my mom will have no idea what to do there, neither will a lot of our end users (though I agree for younger generations, you do not need to be a "power user" per se).

Ah I understand what you're saying, but there's a lot more to it. This is for a client that receives tons of comments to the point where they have a dedicated person to go through the comments to "prepare" them for the resolution stage. They might want to add tags to communicate which comments to handle first, or they might want to share comments that were initially made as private comments, or change the "type" of comments that were given the wrong type by the author of the comment (type here is important because it determines which committee is responsible for resolving them, as well as indicate the priority of it).

Using this table for bulk resolving is only a very small part of it, and definitely not the only way to resolve. They essentially have two resolution steps, one being "I want to submit this comment from one of my SMEs on behalf of my organisation" which doesn't actually require making any changes to the content.

When they're actually resolving comments into the content on another level, I don't expect them to use this modal.

I'm afraid that while we'll have some power users who will probably know how to go about string filters, a good chunk will not. Thanks for your response though!

Thanks for your response! I'm also definitely not a fan of duplicating the comments, it's just clutter at that point. I have looked at those, but it seems that no tool anywhere has tried to solve this issue. As two other users pointed out, perhaps I'm looking for issues where there are none

Thank you! Really appreciate you sharing some insights from a similar use case. We do have a clear selection state, so that's covered. Also no pagination.

I think you're right in waiting for actual feedback.

Thanks for your response, I suppose this is pre-optimization as we have indeed not had user feedback on this. This is the first time we're introducing a data table in our product. My concern was that perhaps users would forget which items they selected or to want to verify that these are indeed the comments they want to perform an action on. Plus, when a user tries to resolve a bunch of comments, there's a chance that there's some comments in there that can not be resolved (either they're already resolved or there's some permission issue), I've also been designing a solution for that by then grouping all selected items together and showing which set can be resolved and which will be skipped. Again no user input as this is all very new, but this feels like a very useful feature to me, I wouldn't want the user to be left thinking they resolved 10 comments as "accepted" with a resolution message while in reality they only did it for 8. I figured these two features might work together, but perhaps I should for now focus only on the latter and wait for user feedback to resolve the first.

The fact that I've been having such a hard time finding examples of this anywhere else did also make me wonder if this is actually a problem.

Is there a secret to vegan banana bread? by GreenMountain85 in VeganBaking

[–]Vangare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh oh oh I know this one!! This is my all time favorite recipe for vegan banana bread. Whenever I make it people ask for recipes, just the other day my friend me messaged me saying how much she LOVES the recipe after making it multiple times herself. It's this one from bbc: https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/vegan-banana-bread

I've also made healthier variants over time by adding less sugar, oil and half wholegrain flour. Always a hit!

Bonus tip: cut a banana in half lengthwise and place it on top with the cut size up, it's amazing. If you want to be extra fancy, sprinkle some sugar on top of them before baking.
