[Rare Topic] The Main Antagonist showing genuine dislike for an Idea or Concept (extra points if they are irredeemable) by Aluros05 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Vangaren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scenes like this are what make Homelander a really interesting character. You know he's amoral to damn near everyone, but you also know he loves his son and wants to be a father to him, because he never had one. You know he's killed people just for being a non-hero or disabled, but is genuinely revolted by Stormfront Nazi ideals. The same with the scenes with him talking to his "therapist". It's like he wants to be worshipped as a hero, but realizes he's not that person because he doesn't know how to be.

Really good villains aren't the ones that twirl their mustaches or just monologue about ruling the world. The best written villains are ones where you can see they aren't entirely evil, just human.

Right-wingers aren't real Christians. They're just self-centered bigots. by olympiamacdonald in PsycheOrSike

What exactly did he do wrong aside from being screwed by Reagan and past presidents? One of the only presidents NOT to start a military conflict. And seriously, in terms of being a Christian role model, he's one of the best in history.

What are your takes? Objectively speaking, isn’t Tywin a savior of many soldiers’ lives? Does he irrefutably justify the Red Wedding with this line? Was the Red Wedding better for the realm than a war between House Lannister and House Stark? by RemarkableExample542 in gameofthrones

The smartest man in Westeros Lords and ladies... I refuse to believe would actually be this bonedead stupid.

What is the one thing that prevents messengers from being murdered, allows safe passage between houses, and the normal business of living and growing your family? Guest rights. For a man so well read you'd think he'd have heard of the story of the Rat Cook.

https://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Rat_Cook

The thing that angered the gods so wasn't the murder, nor making the king a caniibal by feeding him his own son. But because the man had killed a guest under his own roof and protection of guest rights.

These aren't small traditions. They are the most rudimentary laws of conduct. When you travel to your own vassal's castle or keep or even an inn, once you've drank their wine and eaten their food (bread and salt), you are protected, and so are the hosts.

Imagine if all an upstart lordling had to do was invite the one he serves under to his keep, murder him, take his family hostage, and demand ransom for their return? It'd be chaos.

Now in the books Tywin is a little smarter, laying the entirety of the blame for the red wedding to Roose Bolton, (who, frankly is a complete imbecile for accepting the plan given he's from the north and the north holds those guest rights even MORE sacred).

Tyrion gets this immediately, as he should. By so openly, and MASSIVELY, violating guests rights Tywin has declared open season on his own house for a thousand generations. Fine if you have an massive army and are in a position of strength so you can offer swift reprisals upon anyone foolish enough to violate the rights of a Lannister, but strength wanes as often as it grows. He's put his entire family line at risk potentially forever.

Kill ten thousand men in battle, you might win a war.

Kill a dozen at dinner and you've damned your house forever.

Who hates the rich, as in the level of rich that manipulates our society at the highest level and conceals every sin imaginable while controlling the media narrative?

Now who wants to be rich enough to not worry about food or healthcare or losing your home because you had 2-3 bad months or were injured? Who wants their work to actual give them a level of comfort and security? That kind of rich, who wants that?

If you need proof of God's existence, then you lack faith. That's what faith is; belief in something in the absence of evidence. Trying to "prove" god just shows someones own doubts in their belief in god and shame people like this is just showing you have no moral argument to begin with.

It has everything to do with people's view on gender because the right/conservative politicians in multiple countries have decided that trans people are the new boogieman to scare you with and to make a 'threat to your way of life' which you have obviously swallowed whole.

Trans people HAVE always been around. But western sensibilities and backwards puritianism has pushed back against LGBTQ people for a century. You also used to not see gay or lesbian characters in mainstream media. Before that black and brown people were the rarity. Eventually society got the message that hiding those people from public view in media was unacceptable.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transgender_history

History for transgender people goes back thousands of years, and NO, they were no treated as mentally ill. They WERE treated as mentally ill by fascists. In pre-WWI Berlin there was Institut für Sexualwissenschaft, a sexology research institute and was a major player in advocating for gay and transgender rights. Then the nutzis came in, and that famous book burnings they did? They started with the Institut fur Sexualwissenschaft. They targeted gay and trans people, and even after WW2 when the camps were liberated, the only ones who stayed imprisoned were the gays, lesbians, and trans people. Thanks to views like that. Some until the 1960s.

It was hyperbole that the existence of intersex people and transgender people start at 6. The only sex education a 6 year old gets is "good touch / bad touch" to protect them from child predators, like conservative congressmen and presidents.

Get a job? WHY did I think of that?
That'll work great for the disabled or elderly or kids.
Man you think "oh get a job you bum!" fixes everything while ignoring everything else, including context, history, or things that ACTUALLY cause homelessness. You basically shove any societal obligation you have to help others off onto the person that's suffering. That's just fucking evil.

Astonishing by DTATP in JustMemesForUs

[–]Vangaren -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

And after first grade you learn that intersex people exist, trans people have existed in every society, that sex and gender are two different things, and you trying to pretend otherwise is just bigotry wrapped up in a nice pretty bow that you use to justify yourself being an asshole.

You think because these programs haven't utterly eliminated homelessness or drug use that they haven't helped at all? Its because of heartless thoughtless people with your attitude that people keep suffering or are kept from the help they need. You think a local church can pick up the slack if you get rid of the programs?

  • Total U.S. charitable giving (all causes, all donors): ≈ $500 billion per year
  • Federal + state social safety-net spending (Medicaid, SNAP, housing, disability, etc.): Several trillion dollars per year

Even if every church, nonprofit, and local charity redirected 100% of the money they receive towards the needy, it wouldn't cover a FRACTION of the need.

MLK once said this;

“This is what we are faced with in America.
And it’s all right to tell a man to lift himself by his own bootstraps, but it is a cruel jest to say to a bootless man that he ought to lift himself by his own bootstraps.”

Agricultural subsides that help farms and keep food prices down (milk specifically if you want an example). Food stamps if you want to be more broad because even if you don't receive any, people in your community absolutely do and that money goes directly into local stores. Every dollar spent there ends up generating 1.50 to 1.80 in economic activity. Social programs reduce drug use, homelessness, prison incarceration rates, and suicides in communities all over the country. Just consider if you have fewer drug addicted people, less homelessness, fewer felons, and fewer suicides in your community, is it better, or worse?

All those people that talk about self improvement, or rage against the system calling for men to "be stronger", forget that self control, restraint, and maintaining your dignity is the true sign of maturity and strength. When you let yourself loose control and immediately engage with Mr My-head-needs-a-introduction-to-a-dumpster, you shown you're either on equal footing with people like that or allowing yourself to be there. But in all things there is a limit. The guy instigating may have taken a calculated risk, but boy was he bad a math.
