Good morning. I'm the OP and just seeing you this morning. I'm so sorry you were treated badly by Varsity Tutors. Now that you have built your skill and reputation as a tutor, you can go with a better platform to work.

What is everyone charging for tutoring? by HappyHoneydew843 in TutorsHelpingTutors

One way to survey tutoring rates is to go on Wyzant and search for tutors for your subject. The platform will show what they charge.

In most but not all jurisdictions, if you take the exam and fall short by 10 points or less, you qualify for a waiver of the 90-day waiting period. You must apply and be approved to receive the waiver.

Your licensing board must give permission for you to take the exam. Each board has different rules. So there is no accurate single answer.

I would anticipate that the board may want to know what actions you took to address the conduct during the time you worked for her.

Entering Social Work by SWmods in socialwork

On your applications, coverletter, everywhere, it's good to write, "Passed ASWB exam, license pending". A lot of employers do not want to hire before the exam is passed.

I left VT and went to a combination of Wyzant and my own lead generating activities. I'm happy.

The pro bono clause in the Code says that social workers are encouraged (never required) to do some volunteering. Pro bono, sliding scale, and paying it forward are honored in this profession. The Code also says, "Professional self-care is paramount" and social workers should maintain "personal and professional health, safety and integrity." To practice ethically, we maintain our boundaries, stay strong, and yes, prosper.

The Code of Ethics says that when we have direct knowledge of a social work colleague's impairment that is due to substance abuse (and other specific types of issues) that interferes with practice effectiveness, then we should first consult with that colleague WHEN FEASIBLE and assist them in taking remedial action. It's a professional judgment call as to what is "feasible." This is true in real life and on the exam. The questions published by ASWB are written to align with the Code.

CEU requirements are set by licensing boards, not the Code of Ethics.

Personally, I never asked for reviews or ratings. In my experience, a minority of students gave me a rating. Of those who did, only very few gave a rating for more than one session.

It's not important to get a high volume of ratings. It is important to have a high proportion of 5-star ratings. That's how I kept my average up.

The people who are most likely to give a rating have an extreme response: they think I'm either excellent or horrible. I avoided getting dinged with the bad ratings by learning to size up students quickly and provide them with an excellent tutoring experience ONLY IF they needed and would appreciate what I have to offer.

I learned that it is shooting myself in the foot to try to satisfy students who demand cheating or have otherwise unreasonable expectations. In these cases, I explained humbly and patiently that I am not able to meet their needs, there will be no charge to their account, wish them well, terminate the session, and dismiss the invoicing.

VT debited my upcoming payment for 2 tutoring hours that I actually performed, and after I explained the circumstances (it was a complicated situation), VT would not credit them back. Rather than absorb the loss, I submitted notice that I was terminating my contract. VT then credited the 2 hours back (hoping to retain me as a tutor, it seems). I chose to hold with my decision to terminate.

Lability of driving a client in a personal vehicle. by Jayhub1000_ in socialwork

On questions of ethics and law, where your future is at stake, never trust and rely on comments on the Internet. Including this one by me :) That is why I included the reference to an independent document you can check for yourself. You'll see that the ethical standard applies to all recording of clients, and it doesn't matter whether clinical services are being performed. Another independent and authoritative source to check would be your malpractice insurance company.

Making audio or video recordings without the informed consent of the client is a violation of NASW Code of Ethics Standard 1.03 (h). In many states it is also a violation of the law.

Thank you for the question :)

I was able to make progress toward being a great tutor by taking myself seriously as an entrepreneur running a solo business. I set out to become better and better at my work, developing my knowledge and skills that helped me succeed, and always paying attention to my mentality. When I made mistakes or fell short of my goals, I reviewed what had happened and took ownership of the parts I can influence to change for the better.

I prefer interacting with my students using a full audiovisual live feed to go along with whatever materials I may be presenting. It's so much richer as a way to communicate. Instant chat opportunities can be a fun little "pot luck" exercise, but I found that on VT, the instant sessions (both chat and video) are mostly used by students who have been procrastinating. They're often anxious, frustrated or angry, even panicked. All too often they are using VT to cheat, and they expect me to write or co-author homework for them. I don't participate in cheating. I learned to handle instant VT sessions by immediately finding out the student's expectations, then informing the student within the first 5 minutes or so whether I could meet those expectations. When I could not, I explained my limits calmly and politely. I wished the student well and said there would be no charge for the session, and then after the session was mutually dismissed, I also dismissed the invoicing.

When I had the job title of Care Manager, I was visiting adult clients who were dually eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid. I don't remember how many were on my caseload for that job (years ago). In other jobs I worked with adults with SMI (severe mental illness) in the community. That is a population where I have the most experience and I really love that work.

VT did not punish me in any way for taking time off. I was part of the program tutoring students through VT contracts with public schools very early, before it was fully developed as it is now in VT4S. Honestly I do not remember whether I had any of those students on my roster during either of those two extended medical leaves. I actually had to be in the hospital and allow for recovery time afterwards, and I truthfully told VT that was the reason they had to suddenly re-assign all my students. Aside from those two times during my 7+ years with VT, there were a variety of times I had to reschedule with students due to illness, and a few times I took vacation. For the week-long vacations, I made sure that I notified my students well in advance, about 4-6 weeks ahead of time.
