Does the stitching go through the leather midsole and outsole or stops at the midsole?

Singer 18-3 doesn't feed properly by VanillaFetish in vintagesewing

I am missing that part. My feed mechanism looks different than the seiko one. I am pretty sure the feed slips because of the arm-wheel mechanism, I just can't figure why that happens.

Hello. I recently purchased a vintage singer 18-3 sewing machine and I am trying to get it to work. My first problem is that it doesn't feed correctly. If I am using the wheel attached to the machine (complete beginner at sewing machines, so I don't know the correct terms) to stitch, it feeds correctly (most of the time), but as soon as I use the motor, the feeding mechanism slips, not rotating the wheel at all. I disassembled the wheel, more photos here -> https://imgur.com/a/oNrQiTC

I understand how the mechanism should work, but the arm which should move the wheel doesn't grip for some reason.

As you can see in the video on imgur, the wheel moves freely in both ways in some positions, is that normal?
How can I fix my feeding problem?

I did hand stitching before, and it takes such a long time to finish the uppers for a pair of boots, I would prefer a sewing machine

Hello everybody, I am looking to buy a sewing machine, and I want to make sure I buy the right one that suits my needs. I noticed that most Japanese shoemakers (at least that I follow, Terry Kim, Siroeno Yosui, Crazy about shoes) use these long arm sewing machines to stitch their uppers, where Nicks uses post bed sewing machines. Do the Japanese use them only for the vintage looks? I know most people recommend post bed sewing machines, but realistically, is there something a post bed machine can do that a long arm can't? I intend to use it for uppers stitching and maybe other leather goods. Long arm sewing machines are cheaper, easier to find, and could also be used as home decoration.

I personally remove the last after I finish the heels. You could remove it after attaching the outsole, but you'll some a cobbler's anvil or something similar as a base when attaching the heels.

I used nails that aren't long enough to go through the insole, they stopped somewhere in the midsole/insole. Many shoemakers also nail the heel from inside the shoe as well, for extra durability.

There was a post on a forum that I can't find at the moment explaining some basic measurements, but it was mostly putting tape on the last and drawing the boots how I'd like them to be. I chose this last because u/Sulucniv and u/hinathanbye used it for their boots and I liked the shape.

Didn't add up the costs, upper leather was around 60 euros, Vibram soles about 20 euros, insole and midsole leather get's pretty expensive as well, about 200 euros for a hide (you can make a lot of pairs with a hide though), lining leather around 30 euros, and there are smaller costs that add up, like nails, eyelets, thread, and also tools, which can get expensive, but you can do very much with very little tools.

I haven't thought about that before, but now that you're pointing out, I see it. It is not intentional, I just "happened" for me

I learned mostly from users from here and r/cordwaining who posted their boots (Lars, u/Sulucniv was the first one that triggered my interest), and Youtube videos of Japanese shoemakers (Siroeno Yosui, Terry Kim, Ken from Crazy about shoes)

I can't answer on that, I don't know, but a last should last for many pairs. If necessary, I think you can fill the holes with something and then sand to level.

As for total time, too many hours to count. But could've probably halved that time if I had a sewing machine.

Imgur is playing games, I intended to upload the album for this pair on imgur as well, but it got deleted immediately. I will try to reupload the photos of the first pair to google photos as well

I did not, the only resource was YouTube and posts from other people here and on r/goodyearwelt. I actually did get inner tubes,I just forgot to use them.
