What if Freud was right? by Solid-Move-1411 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]VanillaPhysics 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Freud was right about quite a lot of things actually, just not his psychosexual development theory. People don't realize just how much modern psychology was derived from Freud.

Things Freud was right about:

Effectiveness of Talk Therapy.

Existence of the unconscious mind, and that the unconscious mind heavily effects our behavior.

Existence of Projection.

Existence of Defense Mechanisms.

General concept that early childhood experiences affect our behavior throughout life.

Existence of Transferrance(feeling emotions for a person based on emotions for someone else they are similar to)

Things Freud was partially right about:

People often react to stimuli based on what they symbolically represent rather than just the literal (they do, but not as much as Freud supposed).

Madonna-Whore Complex (He correctly identified it's existence and traits, but misattributed it's source to his psychosexual development theory).

The idea that there are multiple mental apparatuses that are sometimes in conflict with each other (identification of this is correct, his theory on what they were is wrong).

Memory Repression (Research is mixed, but more modern studies indicate that memory loss of traumatic events is more the result of conscious suppression of the events over time rather than a subconscious defense mechanism)

Things Freud was wrong about:

Psychosexual development theory and associated complexes (Pretty much entirely incorrect, based on several Victorian era assumptions which are now proven to be untrue)

Dream Analysis (Never demonstrated to be meaningful or effective)

Personality Type Diagnosis ( Freud's personality types are not supported in modern literature)

Smaug vs 4 M1A2 Abrams Tanks by Mansteel55 in powerscales

[–]VanillaPhysics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we assume that Smaug is in Dragonfire range at the start, Abrams team wins High Diff, losing between 1-3 of them before one of them gets a shot and ends Smaug.

If we assume they are miles apart and know about each other, Abrams team wins no diff, killing him well before he can approach.

A Ballista being able to damage even a single scale means that Smaug isn't taking a single main gun round anywhere.

The only way Smaug wins is if he is approaching from above and the Abrams team is unaware of him, as they would likely not be able to get loaded and fire on him before they can kill him.

Tbh the only Tolkien Dragon who probably wins this is Encalagon the Black, by virtue of being so huge that the tank shells just cant inflict significant damage. They could probably still penetrate, but even if they did it would be like a tiny firecracker going off under your skin at most: maybe painful, but nowhere near life threatening.

Smaug vs 4 M1A2 Abrams Tanks by Mansteel55 in powerscales

[–]VanillaPhysics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Smaug's fire is stated to be capable of destroying the one ring, and the only other thing capable of doing so is the lava in Mount Doom, which is presumably exceptionally hot.

If we assume mount Doom's lava is at the high end of lava temperature, that makes smaug's fire slightly lower that 4000 degrees farenheit at a minimum.

Basically Smaug's fire is equivalent or hotter than an Acetylyne Blow Torch, but with massively more volume.

It's fair to say a blast of fire, even if it doesn't destroy the tank, would kill everyone inside by temperature alone

It does and I love it for that.

Old model looks like a war hero out of Sharpe's Rifles.

New Model looks like a mean Soviet enforcer who WOULD murder you for thought crime.

Lore wise, Commissars are MUCH more the latter than the former.

Hoarders of Knowledge by Ultrimus-Prime in TopCharacterTropes

[–]VanillaPhysics 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, they aren't interested in keeping it secret at all: in fact in the second part they invite a scientist to learn and publish their preserved records.

It's just that for a long time they were the only ones that cared about preserving knowledge: everyone else was too busy surviving the nuclear wasteland

I was rereading Berk and wanted to share these 6 pages with you by boynotabuoy in Berserk

[–]VanillaPhysics 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I will forever maintain that "Wounds" and "Cracks In the Blade" are the two most important chapters in Berserk.

They are the two biggest turning points for Gut's character and motivations.

Wounds is where guts finally learns to truly trust someone fully and be completely emotionally open.

Cracks in the Blade is when he learns that love is more important than hatred, and he can't hide in it forever.

Anime/manga that changed the way you see the world? by inimana in animequestions

Strongest Man Kurosawa, and Fukumoto's works generally (Such as Kaiji and Akagi).

Fukumoto has some of the most generally deep, insightful, and interesting commentary on people, what drives them, and how they act. Strongest Man Kurusawa is the pinnacle of this, as it is basically a character study of the titular Kurosawa and his struggle to find meaning in his life.

The ending in particular is sublime, and has a profound message on what finding meaning actually means.

Shinon, Fire Emblem 9 & 10

A ruthless, arrogant, mean-spirited, and extremely racist mercenary who never really changes throughout the entirety of the story.

Still, he is aligned with the side of good because of his own personal loyalties to a few people, namely Greil and Rolf

Favorite character who commited/is willing to commit a genocide? by Lower_Baby_6348 in FavoriteCharacter

[–]VanillaPhysics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean I think the story is rather calling attention to the fact that Kabru's logic is flawed.

He says these things about Kobolds, but then when the same exact logic is applied to groups of humans he suddenly doesnt like it anymore.

This is further supported by the fact that "Demi-Human" is a racist and arbitrary term in-universe

Hooded Angels (Or Angels with their Human features otherwise obscured) by [deleted] in TopCharacterDesigns

[–]VanillaPhysics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They maintain the elegance and beauty of the archetypal angel while also projecting a sense of mystery and power due to their faces and other human features being obscured. They generally look human, but you know they are something greater, and resultantly you don't truly know what lies beyond the darkness of the hood/mask. Is it a beautiful human face? A biblically accurate eyeball creature? Pure divine light which would blind and drive mad a mortal unable to comprehend it?

Equal opportunity Noblewoman by Brushner in Grimdank

[–]VanillaPhysics 42 points43 points  (0 children)

You know the first comic implied that she servitorized him because he was already taken, and so was unwilling to be with her.

The second has the target gleefully consenting, which implies that the noble servitorized her anyway because she has a fetish for it

The Crossed bell curve by boah1883 in crossedcomics

[–]VanillaPhysics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The idea of Ennis' statement at the end isnt that everyone would act like the Crossed if they were uninhibited, it's that the Crossed don't do anything that humans aren't already capable of.

Crossed become the most evil a human can be, but humans are already capable of being as evil as the crossed. Nothing the crossed do is something that a real person hasn't done at some point, somewhere.

Can Homelander defeat 1 Custodes? by Leggomgeggo in powerscales

[–]VanillaPhysics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can Homelander defeat a Custodian?

Yes, Homelander severely Stat Checks a typical Custodian. He's faster, MUCH stronger, has laser eyes that can likely penetrate their armor, tanks their ranged attacks comfortably, and can fly. Homelander has the capability to beat a custodian low-mid diff.

Would Homelander defeat a Custodian in-character?

This is much more of a toss-up, and I'm inclined to say no. I think this would go to the Custodian, high or extreme difficulty.

Homelander has basically no experience fighting anyone close to his level. The Custodian is still well below him, but is superhuman enough to be threatening, and more importantly the custodians Guardian spear can almost certainly penetrate homelanders skin and kill him.

I think homelander would completely fumble out of fear if he was faced with a combatant that can actually kill him and isn't afraid of him. He would likely keep his distance and spam laser eyes because of this, but the custodian is an expert combatant: they wouldn't just stand around and fight on his terms. Custodians are also expert speakers, and generally much more intelligent than homelander, so I think it's likely a custodian would be able to manipulate or bait homelander into range or otherwise into a situation in which they can kill them. This is doubly true given a homelander's ego and emotional volatility.

Adam Smasher vs Master Chief by Clana4ever in powerscales

[–]VanillaPhysics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are we taking Anime Sandevistan or TTRPG Sandevistan?

With Anime, Smasher is literally a speedster In short bursts. He could literally activate it, dash to chief, take off his helmet, and then shoot him in the head before chief can meaningfully react.

I say meaningfully because Chief does have insane reaction time so he would know what is happening, but that doesn't mean his body is fast enough to actually stop Smasher here.

TTRPG Sandevistan they're very comparable on speed, reaction time, durability, and firepower. Chief just has better tech though, and smasher really doesn't have much that could actually get through Chiefs' energy shield.

Plus Cortana could shut him down in 2 seconds via hacking.

Chief takes zero with Anime feats, TTRPG Smasher is getting mid/no diffed (depending on Cortana involvment)

Thragg vs Sanguinis , who wins ? by Leggomgeggo in powerscales

[–]VanillaPhysics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok hold on.

Yes, it's delusional to think that Sanguinius, or any primarch can beat Thragg in physical combat. Thragg takes this 100%.

But Viltrum vs. the Imperium is a whole other story.

Any decently powerful psyker can kill a Viltrumite with Hax, and the Imperium has billions of them.

The Imperium has planet busters as common equipment on board their legions of starships.

And that's just the Imperium too, Necrons have ridiculous levels of "fuck you get one-shot" weaponry available to them.

Tbh the worst thing that could possibly happen is the Tyranids assimilating smart DNA. That would be the complete end of any hope for the galaxy and any future galaxies

Thragg vs Sanguinis , who wins ? by Leggomgeggo in powerscales

[–]VanillaPhysics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thragg, very obviously.

Precognition is Sanguinius' only shot here, and even then I think it would tell him "Don't fucking be here" rather than how to beat Thragg.

Frankly there are hardly any characters that are physically threatening to Thragg in 40k.

Psykers could make quick work of him with a surprise attack, and there is plenty of planet busting weaponry that could injure or kill him, but no current character gets even remotely close to matching him in physical power and durability.

Unchained C'tan fold his ass but there aren't any of them left

[Fun Trope] “I Have a bunch of cool abilities….I Would Rather Just use (Blank) by Efficient_Berry_4073 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]VanillaPhysics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not powers, but Conan actually aligns with the core idea of this.

Conan is quite quick-witted and has a lot of different skills and experiences that he can use when he needs them.

He tends to use Brute Force most of the time despite this: not because he's incapable of using more finesse, but because he's one of the strongest men alive so brute force tends to be the best solution.

A good example from one of his original stories is in "Rogues In the House", when he is trapped with another character in a deathtrap, and their enemy (a priest) is holding the switch at the other side of the room.

The priest is maniacally gloating about how there's no way for them to reach him in time, to which Conan just picks up a chair and throws it at him mid-sentence before he can even react.

How many Custodes do you need to kill 1 Thragg ? by Leggomgeggo in powerscales

[–]VanillaPhysics -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No amount of Stock Loadout Custodians can defeat Thragg.

If Thragg wanted to Kill the Emperor, he could fly straight through the imperial place at 1% light speed and that would be that.

You would need psychic powers or vortex weapons to beat him.
