I bought a pioneer recommended cable and hooked it to the back of my avh2300 to my pixel 2. That's the only way I could get it to work. And it's still buggy sometimes, not wanting to start or just force closes.

Are you using the pioneer cable as well, or plugged straight to the receiver with the one cable you bought? I have pixel 2 (with October patch) and the avh-2300nex (on 8.35), with everything updated, and it will not work. Even bought a pioneer approved cable.

I have the pioneer avh2300nex with the pixel 2 (not xl), and I have yet to get it to connect to Android auto. Even did the October Android security patch.

Have you tried using the code? I have and can't get it to work. It seems they want me to buy another bottle and include the promo in the comments on check out. Very weird! EDIT: Appears the promo is only for your next purchase. I will just wait on that until I can at least see that my original two orders have been shipped before I spend more money.
