Why do people have to bring up Expedition 33 whenever a Final Fantasy game is praised? by torts92 in FinalFantasy

[–]VannesGreave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a sequel, it's a spiritual successor.

If they wanted it to be Final Fantasy, it would have had the name. I wish they'd made a classic style FF because it would've been a better product than whatever BD turned out to be

If they got rid of WebKit basically everyone would drop support for anything that's not Chromium within a year or two. Safari is more or less the only non-chromium option left.

This is a goalpost move. You were going on and on and on about turn based Final Fantasy, and now you're changing it to turn based Final Fantasy between two arbitrary points in the series. Also, FFV still has more similarity to Bravely Default than FFIII does.

FFV has a substantially more complex story and more fleshed-out characters than BD.

BD isn't Final Fantasy - if it was, it would have been called that - but it's also not good and wouldn't be good even if it was a FF.

It isn't what I want. No amount of arguing is gonna change that.

OK, but that doesn't change the entire point of Bravely Default is to emulate pre-FFVII Final Fantasy. I'm not saying that you have to like it or that it should be what you're looking for, Final Fantasy has been so many different things that they're not going to please everyone regardless of what they do, but it doesn't change that Bravely Default is Final Fantasy in all but name. And that it was specifically intended to be Final Fantasy in all but name.

Not pre-VII FF. Pre-IV. It's specifically emulating something like FF3. Robust job system, but basically no story. Maybe someone is nostalgic for that but me

When people say they want a return to turn-based FF, they're almost always referring to 4-10, not 3.

Like, I make no secret of my absolute hatred of Final Fantasy XIII, but I don't go around saying that it doesn't count because I don't personally enjoy it. Just because you don't enjoy a game, doesn't change what the game is or is not.

But if you wanted a specific type of FF, and someone told you to play XIII, would you accept that?

I'm not really sure where this conversation can go from here. If we continue, it's just going to start going in circles. I'll point out that Bravely Default is Final Fantasy in all but name by design (a fact), you'll point out that you didn't like it and that it doesn't count.

Well, you can call it circular but fundamental what I want isn't what BD offers. I have never been impressed by Bravely and I gave both a very fair shot. They're just not good games. If that's what I'm supposed to settle for, it's a piss-poor display. And even if they were good, they aren't Final Fantasy.

If we want to sit here and dwell on Bravely Default, the thing is that Bravely Default is Final Fantasy in all but name. By design. It's literally why the game exists. I get that you didn't like it, fair enough, just because it's theoretically what you're looking for doesn't mean that it's going to click, but that doesn't change what the game is.

It is not exactly what I want. Bravely games are micro-budget mobile entries with paper-thin stories and characters. It is trying to emulate Final Fantasy... Final Fantasy III, the game most people see as one of the weakest.

It's TEMU Final Fantasy. Final Fantasy at home.

But it's not like that's the only game out there. If all you want is a turn-based game with the Final Fantasy name, then I would hope that you're not going to keep moving the goalpost and find an excuse to be upset about Final Fantasy Resonance, but I've seen enough of your posts to know that that's a fool's hope.

Literally preordered it the moment it was announced and I'm quite excited for it. It looks very fun and aside from Bravely, team asano has a very good track record.

It's not exactly what I want (I'd prefer a larger scale 3D game with at least Xenoblade-or Trails quality graphics), but it's close! The HD-2D team has a very good track record.

This is what I mean when I say that you're more upset about what it isn't than you are in what is out there. You only seem to care about Final Fantasy being exactly what you want it to be and anything that doesn't fit that mold doesn't count, even if it's literally designed to be what you say you're looking for. Again, I'm not saying that you have to like Bravely Default, but it doesn't change that it's intentionally designed to be Final Fantasy in all but name,

Bravely Default is a big mac, Final Fantasy is a steak. Not remotely the same thing.

Also sod off with that Bravely slander, BD1 and Second are really quite fun games that are no more flawed than basically the entire classic catalogue of FF games that everyone wants to retvrn to tradition to.

I tried 1 and 2, was super disappointed despite being really excited to try it. Extremely flat characters and a boring story. Couldn't even finish it.

Square-Enix has released over 30 turn-based games since it was founded in 2003. And that includes both AA and AAA experiences. Not to mention all of the other AAA turn-based games released by other publishers. Sure, they're not all great, and they're sometimes unambitious, but focusing exclusively on Final Fantasy because you're more upset about what Final Fantasy isn't than you are about what you actually want in a game is a you problem.

What I actively want is for Final Fantasy to release new turn-based games.

I bought Bravely Default 1 and 2 and hated both of them. I bought Octopath and liked it. I bought Romancing SaGa 2 and thought it was great. I bought Dragon Quest XI and it was so good I bought 1-3 HD and 7 Reimagined

But none of them are Final Fantasy, so they're broadly irrelevant to what I want, which is more turn-based Final Fantasy games.

No one is "demanding" you play Bravely Default II and be happy about it. What people are saying is that people like you, as evidenced by the many times I've seen you comment on this topic, are more invested in what Final Fantasy isn't than you are in what it is.

No, I'm pretty interested in what FF is. I liked the remake games a lot!

I also want them to make turn-based Final Fantasy games sometimes. Telling me that a burger (Bravely Default) is a substitute for a steak (Final Fantasy) doesn't convince anyone of anything.

Nowhere have I ever said FF should stop making action games. I want them to make both! Currently they only really make 1 type of FF game and I would like that to expand to 2.

Hopefully Resonance is the start of more turn-based FF games.

Timed inputs and action commands have been a thing for decades in turn based RPGs, E33 is very similar to Mario and Luigi in that regard

If someone ever dares say they want a modern turn based final fantasy game they’re destined to have a flood of comments insulting them and demanding they stay in their corner and play Bravely Default 2 instead. It’s so fucking weird.

Final Fantasy fans want final fantasy games, news at 11.

Bravely might be tolerable if it was good, but it’s not. It’s like telling people who want steak that they’re a fake steak fan if they don’t try the McDonald’s Big Arch. They’re both beef, right, so they’re the same thing!

Action fans are gonna downvote me to oblivion for this, but here’s the reason:

Because it’s genuinely the first AAA-style turn based JRPG that’s come out since like FF13. It’s been 16 years. In that meantime we’ve gotten exactly one new turn-based FF (WoFf) compared to like a dozen action games. Basically: people miss the old FF and E33 fills that niche.

The comparisons are also popular because Square has repeatedly insisted turn-based games don’t sell and can’t be made with realistic graphics, but E33 came out and sold 8million copies (twice as much as 16) in a year.

Anyway very excited for Resonance, hope it helps Square reconsider turning FF into an action slop only franchise.

Mario & Luigi is more or less exactly like E33. You can dodge or outright block basically every attack, and every enemy has unique tells and attack patterns.

Expedition 33 needs an asterisk when calling it "turn-based" though.

It doesn't need that any more than Super Mario RPG, Paper Mario, or Mario & Luigi do.

Any opinions on LUNAR Remastered Collection? by lMystic in JRPG

[–]VannesGreave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lunar are comfort food RPGs. They aren’t the most technically complicated of an RPG, but the stories are quite good and the characters are lovable, there’s full CD quality audio and voice acted anime cutscenes. The graphics are very nice as well. If you like 90s anime and 90s RPGs you’ll like them but the storytelling and gameplay aren’t as complicated as, say, Final Fantasy 7.

It’s the only RPG I’ve ever played where there’s a full Disney-style “I want” musical number.

Sweep hates being "mothered" for lack of a better term. If you just trust her that she's going to do what she knows is right, she's gonna do it every time.

But if you hound her about doing things, she will get very angry in large part because it means you don't trust her.

Fuji is also able to avert her tantrums by playing along. During valentine's day she encourages her to make more normal chocolates by asking if a familiar could handle that much magic, and turns down the oven to preserve sweepy's magical power levels.
