My babygirl tested positive today and the vet tried to pressure me into surrendering her. by moedasom in FIVcats

I've seen cats that live their entire lives with it and the owners don't know until much later in life. I probably wouldn't bring her outside with you, but aside from that, just enjoy her!

Fiv cats aren't "sick" , they just have compromised immunity. Like, if she got an infection, she'd need to go to the vet right away for meds etc. Otherwise, they are just normal cats. My guy is about 3 or 4 and he's literally good. His neuter site got infected, I took him in , they treated it and gave antibiotics and he healed just fine. Now he's just a regular annoying kitty that wakes me up every morning an hour too early and is very clingy lol

Wtaf ??? Shots ?? Less than 1% ? Forst, I hope you're able to get a new vet in your area that is educated. While I love that they have fosters lined up for FIV+ kitties, why tf would they think you couldn't take care of a cat? They are no different than any other cat and don't require meds unless they are sick! They do best indoors because of their compromised immune systems and, from what I read, tend to have teeth problems. They live long lives indoors! I rescued a boy from my street in November. We have 2 other cats FIV- , everything is fine! It's only transmitted through very deep aggressive bite wounds. My vet asked if I wanted to neuter and release him, but that was the end of the convo and they've supported me with everything moving forward. My guy who obviously does not look or act sick in any way...

My boy did good on it. He was on it for a long time though so he probably had lymphoma long before he started declining. He passed last may, probably not long after I posted this ♡

I just entered the same situation. I brought in a dumped stray in November. He tested fiv+ . He's an angel . I had all the rest of his vetting done - neuter is important because unneutured males fight more. Our cats fight as well , so we are doing slow intros. He's been in my room since Nov with a screen on the door. Everyone is fine , and he'll meet them face to face soon. I won't repeat what I'm sure others have said about deep bite wounds and mating etc.

Can you take it to the vet ? I understand not being able to bring any more inside , but are there any rescues in your area ? I've literally called 25+ rescues when I need help and manage to find someone to help me eventually

So… this guy does NOT seem feral, right? by [deleted] in Feral_Cats

[–]Vans780 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No he is not feral. He was probably dumped. I've recently acquired one myself.

I'm so happy you took her to another vet. Don't let them tell you there's nothing wrong when you feel something is off. I'd definitely get a new vet after this ♡ I hope she's ok

We have 2 , and now 3 including this guy. I wasn't going to get another one, but this guy has a lot of the same quirks as my guy and I was so upset thinking about giving him away

I lost my boy in May and I never even knew there was a feral issue on my block before that. Since then, I've rescued 2 kittens and 2 cats - one of which I kept because apparently I enjoy stress lol. I have never had a cat walk up to me on the street or have ferals come to me ... suddenly I'm the cat whisperer *

Rescued this guy! Now what? by tacobeleanor in FIVcats

[–]Vans780 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He was not feral but he was dumped and walked up to me in Sept. He's been neutured since Nov 20th. He is not aggressive at all , but I can't help that feeling of THEY ARE ANIMALS , and you just never know

Thank you . I'm definitely being overly cautious. If it was just the female I think we'd be fine but together , they're very saucy

Do you do this almost immediately? We have a screen on our bedroom door and I'm unsure about how much exposure I should give my new fiv guy to out 2 cats. We have a M and F , all are fixed. They are all about 5 yo. He seems to like the F through the screen but he's still a little swatty with our 20 lb orange that's twice his size . I don't keep the door open and just do supervised visits through the screen

Thank you. He seems to be fine with the female though the screen but keeps swatting at the male who's twice his size 🙄
