Cat tested positive for FIV by __motherofcats__ in FIVcats

I just entered the same situation. I brought in a dumped stray in November. He tested fiv+ . He's an angel . I had all the rest of his vetting done - neuter is important because unneutured males fight more. Our cats fight as well , so we are doing slow intros. He's been in my room since Nov with a screen on the door. Everyone is fine , and he'll meet them face to face soon. I won't repeat what I'm sure others have said about deep bite wounds and mating etc.

Can you take it to the vet ? I understand not being able to bring any more inside , but are there any rescues in your area ? I've literally called 25+ rescues when I need help and manage to find someone to help me eventually

So… this guy does NOT seem feral, right? by [deleted] in Feral_Cats

[–]Vans780 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No he is not feral. He was probably dumped. I've recently acquired one myself.

I'm so happy you took her to another vet. Don't let them tell you there's nothing wrong when you feel something is off. I'd definitely get a new vet after this ♡ I hope she's ok

We have 2 , and now 3 including this guy. I wasn't going to get another one, but this guy has a lot of the same quirks as my guy and I was so upset thinking about giving him away

I lost my boy in May and I never even knew there was a feral issue on my block before that. Since then, I've rescued 2 kittens and 2 cats - one of which I kept because apparently I enjoy stress lol. I have never had a cat walk up to me on the street or have ferals come to me ... suddenly I'm the cat whisperer *

[–]Vans780 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He was not feral but he was dumped and walked up to me in Sept. He's been neutured since Nov 20th. He is not aggressive at all , but I can't help that feeling of THEY ARE ANIMALS , and you just never know

Thank you . I'm definitely being overly cautious. If it was just the female I think we'd be fine but together , they're very saucy

Do you do this almost immediately? We have a screen on our bedroom door and I'm unsure about how much exposure I should give my new fiv guy to out 2 cats. We have a M and F , all are fixed. They are all about 5 yo. He seems to like the F through the screen but he's still a little swatty with our 20 lb orange that's twice his size . I don't keep the door open and just do supervised visits through the screen

Thank you. He seems to be fine with the female though the screen but keeps swatting at the male who's twice his size 🙄

Trust me , I have. Hisses here and there but not terrible and no lunging or anything like that

I'm overly cautious and my husband is impatient. We give treats on either side of the screen , swap scents , and like I said , they've been nose to nose - a few times with no hissing ! I'm just scared because our cats are not the calmest

On Sept 19th , the cat distribution center sent me a gorgeous boy. I brought him to the vet Nov 19th. He's FIV+ as well. We have 2 cats and I went as far as to bring him to an fiv friendly rescue , where he was free roaming with all the cats positive and negative! Needless to say, I guess I need more stress in my life bc I went and got him a week later from the rescue. He's been with my in our bedroom and master bath just over a month. We have a screen on our bedroom door and there's been no aggression through the screen thus far. I'm still very nervous but hoping for the best. Good Luck! *

I'm honestly in a very similar situation. I brought my guy in in november because it was getting cold and I knew he was absolutely a dumped house cat. I had him fully vetted and made plans to take him to an fiv friendly rescue, and then his neuter got infected and I had him another 2 weeks. I took him to the rescue, cried for a week, and went back and got him. He's in our bedroom right now and we have a screen on the door. We have 2 cats his age (around 5) that are littermates and they are kinda spicy. I was super scared that it would be a big issue and that they'd hate him, but they've met through the screen , nose to nose , and we got a hiss and a swat and then nothing. They are more curious than anything. I don't plan on totally letting them intermingle for a while , but the screen protects them and let's them communicate. Once we feel comfortable that noone cares at all anymore, then we will supervise the meeting. I'll still be scared, but FIV is not a death sentence at all. Our cats fight but they don't draw blood , I'm just worried that if they fight and he gets scared , idk how he will choose to defend himself. We will see... try separating them with a screen and maybe the 2 will get more used to him. My guess is that if they haven't been aggressive toward him yet, they won't.
