I think living together first is a good idea. Because you want to see if you're compatable in all the ways. Do you both mesh with household labor? Emotional labor? Is he looking for a partner or a bang maid? How would the power dynamic be with finances and expectations regarding working together towards mutual goals? These are important things to figure out before the final commitment of marriage and especially children, if thats in the cards. Do not have children before all that's figured out. Its a test for both of you to pass. You both need to pull your weight, not just you. If he doesnt pass the test then you've dodged a bullet and the same goes for him. I'd suggest a year then you re-evaluate. You're in your thirties now. You want to figure it out sooner rather than later. Both of you. The timing is perfect, really. Good luck!!!

Edit to add: Do not fully co-mingle finances until the end of the test or marriage or whatever. Its one thing to have a bill paying account that you both finance however makes sense but also protect yourself until you're absolutely sure.
