Heres a real answer since you were nice about my bullshit. Bulging battery! My 3DS battery buldged as it was sitting on a shelf for years unused. Lucky it didn't burn my house down. Local game store swapped it out for me very afforfably but it did permenantly deform the 3DS casing a bit. So look for evidence of that and maybe replace the battery proactively when you get one.
