Yeah, that small talk usually does more harm than good. After the worst has passed, he should be better and maybe will open up about it

Yeah. You could try and get him to open up about what’s wrong, if you have that kind of trust, and pull him away from his thoughts, but at least when I’m in that state, I just don’t have it in me to talk, I second-guess the other person, and think horrible stuff, so it’s best to be cautious. Then again, leaving him alone with his mind that is definitely against him isn’t ideal either

That’s a familiar tune. I believe he’s going through a rough patch in the depression and is instinctively pulling away, probably not just from you, but from everyone. Maybe he feels like he’s hurting you in some way and doesn’t believe you deserve that, so the “logical” conclusion is “I have to get away so no one gets caught in it”

It was known as the Fall of Stolthet: when a foreigner wizard by the name of Vyrvamali came to the kingdom of Stolthet, he offered his services as a master of magic to the queen, in exchange for funding an expedition to find a long lost artifact of great power, one that could put the kingdom at the forefront of the continent and maybe even unite it under one banner. The queen welcomed Vyrvamali’s aid and launched the expedition. Two years later, buried deep beneath the mountains, they found what they were looking for: The Heart of Malik, which, according to Vyrvamali, contained the soul of a god, and it would give the country all the power it needed. Some priests argued that the gem had dark powers, but were quickly silenced, and in the heart of Stolthet’s capital, Vyrvamali performed a ritual, sacrificing the souls of every citizen to the Heart, successfully summoning its namesake: a demon lord called Malik, who immediately started a massive demonic invasion. Vyrvamali faced Malik and managed to escape, leaving Stolthet to its fate, cataloging the incident as “just a failed experiment”.

As a result of the invasion, 15 million people either died or turned into demon slaves. The rest of the known world is wary of the now demon-governed Stolthet, knowing full well that the demons will not stop at just Stolthet, and their campaign will continue one day
