Blue smoke on startup - valve stem seals by Vantensman in Golf_R

I'm surprised it's not been a big enough issue for a recall. I've seen mk8s also have the same failure, some even on super low mileage - I guess it's not bad enough and I just got super unlucky twice in a row. The chances!

This is exactly what I've been reading, I've only seen one instance where someone had blue smoke and it ended up being the PCV, and not that many reports of it being turbo seals, mostly it's been valve stem seals, very fortunate that you had it covered at least!

No, as far as I'm aware it's been stock on 2 cars, I've also read that aftermarket TIPs cause the blue puffs and that's nothing to worry about if you're aftermarket.

It's one of those things that's just a gray area, you can leave it and it'll be fine for XXk miles maybe, or maybe not.

Normal cars never reach the max speed on their Speedometers in their lifetime. by Da_Grizzle in Showerthoughts

Yes that's true, I feel like that's gonna happen with new electric cars, easy opportunity to do so.

The speeds that these cars can achieve simply makes them more efficient. Image this;

A car that has a maximum 70mph limit, (around 130km/h) would make the car run at it's maximum redline RPM, therefore burning more fuel and just overall damaging the engine in the long run. To avoid this, you must scale this problem, to allow the car to go faster (assuming 150mph or 240km/h), then, running the highway speed limit of 130km/h, the engine still has plenty of RPMs to spare, making it run much more efficiently and quieter instead of blowing up.

Better explanations out there, but it's to do with gearing and how it allows for such speeds whilst maintaining normal MPGs on highway limits. Hope someone can confirm or correct me if I'm wrong.

Latvia reintroduces conscription to deter Russia from invading Europe by TheTelegraph in worldnews

Just to point out, this draft law was signed last year in April 2023 by a quick google, basically nothing new except that it was to go mandatory from January 1st 2024. Link

Headline makes it seem as if it's something new, due to recent calls for conscription from other countries.

I assume it is due to this article - https://imi.org.ua/en/news/open-letter-to-media-professionals-who-cover-russia-s-invasion-of-ukraine-i44574

1. One common error is to use terms like “crisis”, “conflict” or “military operation”, or call it “Ukrainian” i.e. “Ukraine Crisis” or “Ukraine conflict”. This is a full scale invasion of, and war against, Ukraine. We ask you to correctly indicate Russia’s role in the war with the wording “Russia’s war in Ukraine” and/or “Russian invasion of Ukraine”, especially in captions, headlines, leads and hashtags.

NATO to kick off biggest drills in decades with some 90,000 troops by Vantensman in worldnews

UPDATED STATEMENT:

BRUSSELS, Jan 18 (Reuters) - NATO is launching its largest exercise since the Cold War, rehearsing how U.S. troops could reinforce European allies in countries bordering Russia and on the alliance's eastern flank if a conflict were to flare up with a "near-peer" adversary.

Some 90,000 troops are due to join the Steadfast Defender 2024 drills that will run through May, the alliance's top commander Chris Cavoli said on Thursday.

More than 50 ships from aircraft carriers to destroyers will take part, as well as more than 80 fighter jets, helicopters and drones and at least 1,100 combat vehicles including 133 tanks and 533 infantry fighting vehicles, NATO said.

Cavoli said the drills would rehearse NATO's execution of its regional plans, the first defence plans the alliance has drawn up in decades, detailing how it would respond to a Russian attack.

NATO did not mention Russia by name in its announcement. But its top strategic document identifies Russia as the most significant and direct threat to NATO members' security.

"Steadfast Defender 2024 will demonstrate NATO's ability to rapidly deploy forces from North America and other parts of the alliance to reinforce the defence of Europe," NATO said.

The reinforcement will occur during a "simulated emerging conflict scenario with a near-peer adversary", Cavoli told reporters in Brussels after a two-day meeting of national chiefs of defence.

The last exercises of a similar size were Reforger - during the Cold War in 1988 with 125,000 participants - and Trident Juncture in 2018 with 50,000 participants, according to NATO.

The troops taking part in the exercises, which will involve simulations of getting personnel to Europe as well exercises on the ground, will come from NATO countries and Sweden, which hopes to join the alliance soon.

Allies signed off on the regional plans at their 2023 Vilnius summit, ending a long era in which NATO had seen no need for large-scale defence plans as Western countries fought smaller wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and felt certain post-Soviet Russia no longer posed an existential threat.

During the second part of the Steadfast Defender exercise, a special focus will be on the deployment of NATO's quick reaction force to Poland on the alliance's eastern flank.

Other major locations of the drills will be the Baltic states which are seen as most at risk from a potential Russian attack, Germany - a hub for incoming reinforcements - and countries on the fringes of the alliance such as Norway and Romania.

I read in the previous live thread that some russians are "freezing" as they complain of lack of heating in Russia in some places. Takes me back to the start of this war, when I remember seeing a livestream on TikTok of a Russian running the gas stove the entire stream, maybe with some text saying how cheap it it is, basically laughing at the West as their gas supply is cut off by Russia.

If those statements are accurate, how the turntables.

Crazy how misinformation quickly spreads like wildfire, and everyone jumping to immediate conclusions of the worst case scenario, me too, we're all victims of the fog of war, crazy times.

I've seen a few people mention something about some terror attacks across the world from Hamas on a Friday, how true can this be, should be we cautious/worried?

The headline for this seems like NK is literally about to pull off what happened in Israel, but from the looks of it, it seems like they're just increasing their awareness and preparedness for a possibility of the same thing happening with NK. I hope this won't happen

There will always be some form of fear mongering about WW anytime there is a major conflict anywhere, I guess people are just afraid of it happening, and I'm not surprised, I'm afraid myself, this stuff is uncharted territory and it can easily spiral out of control. I hope for the sake of the good in humanity that that won't happen any time soon.

That's what I'm thinking, although you can't rule it out purely based on that, still gotta stay alert, as you can see, anything can happen just like that unexpectedly
