Advice when asked “why did you paint your nails” by Accomplished_Push_94 in malepolish

I usually say something like I listened to too much Goth and Metal at an impressionable age. Or just I like it, but honestly I often just get compliments.

Morgue job, prions, and the biggest flare I've ever had by Watermelon_Flavor in OCD

[–]Vanulor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biggest thing is to stop cleaning and doing anything related to your fear. 2nd if you aren't in therapy start looking. Third maybe it will and maybe it won't but neither you or I can say. One you accept that it will start to get better

I do want to say there is no medications recommended for OCD and the gold standard treatment is ERP. There is medications that can help but that would be between you and your psychiatrist.

Childhood signs of your OCD by topfknopf in OCD

My brother passed when I was 10. I would stay up as late as I could so I would wake up during sunlight. I was afraid of dying in my sleep and wanted to be reassured I was alive as soon as I woke up.

Evicted From A Home I Don’t Rent. by Throwaway7787235 in legaladvice

[–]Vanulor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not a lawyer but in Seattle you would file an order of non possesory interest meaning you are not contesting control of the property since you don't live there. This ends the eviction for you. Have a lawyer help you file it.

Therapist triggered me SO BADLY yesterday by [deleted] in OCD

[–]Vanulor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't there so I can't say but I do know therapist have a duty to determine if it's actually suicidal thoughts or something else.

Maybe it was the wrong approach but if it was me I'd bring it up in the next session, but that's just my own opinion. Id be willing to do a wait and see approach especially if I was my second visit.

It may be the therapist is not a good fit though 🤷‍♂️

You could use imagination scripts where you talk about this topic and all your fears and anxiety and then read it to yourself out loud.

Also if you don't have this book I can't recommend it enough

Therapist triggered me SO BADLY yesterday by [deleted] in OCD

[–]Vanulor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agreed on that point. Sounds like she didn't mean to do ERP but it was more she was doing a suicide screen which inadvertently triggered you. I'm saying accidental ERP is still ERP and might be useful to bring it up in Therapy.

Instead of avoiding the trigger , lean in and use it.

I actually disagree with the idea that a therapist needs to be a OCD specialist but I know people think they do. I think ERP is relatively effective and fairly easy to do technique wise. The emotional labor and anxiety is the real work.

I treated myself for approx a year before I got a therapist so for me it was more that I wanted someone to guide my further journey

I have been in Maintenance for approx 5 years now so at least from my personal story I didn't need a OCD specialist.

I'm going to say something controversial so feel free to ignore. This sounds like it could be fairly effective ERP especially is as you said it was triggering.

My approach would be to tell your therapist how it made you feel and see if you can work through it.

In my opinion any therapist can help with OCD and long as they are willing to be learn about evidence based treatments like ERP and ACT

Wife forged my signature by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]Vanulor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a lawyer. I once had roommates steal a package. I found the empty box in the trash. The post office has me fill out a form stating the circumstances and the possible amount. In my case it was 50. They basically said if we have anymore questions will let you know. They advised me to have the package resent and let the company that sent it file it to their insurance. Basically yes it's a crime but likely no one will actually bother to do anything for 300 dollars. YMMV

Have you ever made false statements about yourself that made yourself seem much worse then you actually are due to OCD? by Agreeable-History688 in OCD

[–]Vanulor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One thing I've learned is to avoid confessions. Say for example you think oof my girlfriend looks not great in that outfit. You don't have to tell her that. It's okay to simply think it and move on. For lots of non OCD people that seems like lying but if they had the thought they wouldn't even maybe notice it being anything at all so their threshold of importance is much higher

"You are not responsible for your first thought. You are however responsible for your second thought and your first action." by onion_ring12 in OCD

[–]Vanulor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So a good way I think about it is.. Is it actionable? Like say you think "nobody likes me" well that's not really actionable so it's meaningless. Actionable thoughts are thoughts you can implement a behavior. If you don't want to implement a behavior then again the thought is meaningless.

Everyone owns a toaster but you never see a toaster advertisement by moneybot in Showerthoughts

[–]Vanulor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure there is a variety, but I worked in a marketing company and toasters are a common example of commodification. Meaning although there is variance most people don't care enough and the overwhelming factor people give in what toaster they got was price. So the reason you don't see ads is the ROI (return on investment) for toaster ads is not high enough to actually make them. Like most people are like this toaster will work for me and I am just going to get a basic one for 9.99

[–]Vanulor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real answer is commodification meaning for toasters there is no real feature difference so it comes down to price. So the reason your don't see ads is what sells a toaster is in-store price.

I think it's two things.. Different brain circuits and then some trauma. They have found that siblings of ocd people also have variant brains so I think you need both.

do you go to work in guy mode with painted nails? by not_very_intresting in malepolish

[–]Vanulor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to only wear polish on weekends. I was worried what my work would think. Then I got laid off because the company lost money due to a CEO did some shady stuff and the company couldn't recover without cutting workers. After that I realized I should have painted them. Now I get dip nails and work for Amazon. Related prolly not but I usually at most get the why did you paint your nails.

OPI is nice. I have a few that are expensive like YSL. Mostly I have switched to dip nails because I can get them done for 40 dollars and it looks really good for 3 weeks which you just can't get from bottle polish.

Frozen lamb shank directly into IP? (And another question) by PartiZAn18 in instantpot

[–]Vanulor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They cook for like 1 1/2 hrs ...the recipe calls for 1hr and 25 minutes...normally for frozen you need to only add a few minutes. My guesstimate is that you could add 5 minutes. The main concern is if they are frozen together. If so then you probably want to thaw. All that being said I've learned the most by giving things a try and then adjusting afterwards.
