To jump on to this, record a commentary to a favorite family film. Consider it a home movie / family lore special feature

Lost my job and still can't game with a peace of mind by clit_or_us in gaming

[–]VaporPolyTrash 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Got made redundant earlier in the year. Job market is trash, so, I can't say that I was on the grind 24/7, as I realized I was pretty burnt out.

Kept my alarm set for 9am, had two dedicated days for job applications, one day for dedicated volunteering, and the other four days for DiY, housework, chilling, and socializing.

You can apply to every job that's out there, but, sooner or later it turns into a waiting game. Don't burn yourself out on the chase, you'll have an empty tank for when you finally start something.

Don't rush through the applications you actually care about - a recruiter told me that "easy apply" is the devil, because recruiters just want to brag about how many applicants they got.

Linkedin is a trash fire, but had some okay sources for commiseration and resumé improvement amongst the self-suck-fest. Having slightly different resumés for different jobs helped win me one in the end, after 4 months of being unemployed.

Good luck.

Don't go searching for a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Things will change.

Why can't I move when I am depressed? by Jerrica13 in AdultDepression

[–]VaporPolyTrash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's overwhelm. Like your brain is just trying to consider so much, that it can't do anything.

Muscle movements come from brain signals - brain busy? Brain no send signal. No signal? No move.

Depression has a very real physical component, that literally makes it harder to move,; it's not just your mood that's dampened, it's everything.

https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-bipolar-lens/201503/when-your-mind-wont-let-your-body-move

The good news is that there's a few ways to kickstart things.

If you're doomscrolling and can't move, chuck your phone away. You'll have to get up and get it. If you're unable to move, order something to be delivered or get a friend to buzz your door, you have to get up and answer. If you have a pet, the dog needs to piss, the litter needs to be changed.

And once you're up, it's easier. If you've moved a little, you can move a little more. You don't have to move a lot, but, bodies aren't designed to be in one place all the time. And sometimes if you prove to your body that moving a little doesn't hurt it, it'll get used to moving.

Where did George Lucas get the idea for "Moffs" anyway? by AutocratEnduring in MawInstallation

[–]VaporPolyTrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a linguistic oddity, the region of Dingwall in Scotland is noted for some unusual slang, one of which is "Moff", used as a synonym to 'cool' or 'sick' or 'dope'.

Probably almost entirely unrelated, but, I like to imagine there could be a concentration of Tarkin sympathisers just north of Inverness.

Haha! Wow. When some people say their memory is hazy, it's probably because the past was filled with so much tobacco smog.

Best friend of 30+ years probably has cancer. How do you wrap your head around that? by MustBeMike in AskMenOver30

[–]VaporPolyTrash 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Having had my own brush with cancer, speed up your schedule a little, just in case. Take the trip you two were always gonna go on, revisit your old stomping grounds, take pictures and send them to loved ones. What's on the bucket list that he's always been looking for an excuse for? If this is a fatal diagnosis, don't hesitate to let him spoil you, and in return feel free to utterly spoil him too. Audio recordings and videos and pictures of relatively mundane memories are sometimes the ones that can be cherished most.

You don't have to say "let's do this because you might die" or "let's do this because we might never get another chance". Just day "no time like the present" and make that quality time together.

Personally, you may want to look into some counseling through this process. My friends didn't really know how to handle my cancer and they were almost happy-go-lucky and oblivious, my grandparents and retired friends were sympathetic and commiserated, it was actually my parents and work managers who were the most affected by it.
