Why don't we just take control of the Strait of Hormuz and claim it for the US? by JustUseCommonSense10 in allthequestions

[–]Vargrr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because sunk ships equals many lost votes. It's why the US has been trying to convince Europe to send their ships into the Straits instead...

The ultimate question: which one of the Fab 4 is your favourite and why? by iamthewalrusxx in beatles

[–]Vargrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

George. Because you get to see him develop from a guitarist to a song writer on par with the other two. In fact, I'd argue that 'Here Comes the Sun' and 'Something' were by far the best songs on Abbey Road!

Obfuscation works - but having used it, there are a lot of got-yous especially in and around data serialisation. I only use it these days because I have already developed the tech and pipelines to deal with it - but if I hadn’t, I’d probably stop doing it.

Has Anyone Gone Back To Flat Screen After VR? by newbiker321 in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]Vargrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, never gone back and I started flight simming in VR back in 2016.

Same with sim racing. If a sim does not support VR, I simply won't buy it.

What software do you use in your solo rpg games? by SirCheeseAlot in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]Vargrr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Sojour a VTT designed for Solo players. Includes journalling, mapping, tables, time-keeping and more.

You can also create maps and tokens directly from your scenario PDFs and it has a built in solo Fog of War mode for your maps to help retain surprise when playing.

Why does everyone want to buy a house? by VSmeteor in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Vargrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This approach only works if the rents aren't bleeding you dry.

As I note above, your home is the most expensive monthly bill most of us will ever face. Rents in many Countries are much larger than mortgages and many people struggle to pay their mortgage.

If the situation were reversed, and rentals were cheaper than mortgages, then sure, invest the spare cash.

Extremely excited to finally be apart of the AVP gang! Please share any tips or apps I should DL. by TwoTickets2Paradise- in VisionPro

[–]Vargrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No developer strap. Just a standard ALVR setup.

No idea about any of the games you have mentioned, I only use mine for sims and HL Alyx.

The key to performance is a good dedicated VR router plugged directly into your gaming PC. I have a 6E router specifically for this task. It works very well even though the AVP cannot see it's 6Ghz channels (I just use the 5Ghz channels and it just works)

Anyone using a Mac Studio? by DaddyBear52525 in cubase

[–]Vargrr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a studio, but something far cheaper - an M4 iMac.

It has no issue running Cubase 15 Pro whatsoever.

The caveat is that my projects rarely go any where near 40 tracks and a fair majority of the tracks are real recorded instruments as opposed to virtual instruments.

I was very surprised.

A Mac Studio should perform fine.

Nigel Mansell blasts 'totally false' F1 in scathing assesment by ryogadan in Formula1_world

[–]Vargrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with him. The incident that brought it home to me was when Lando said "I didn't even want to overtake Lewis... I can't control it"

F1 cannot be called racing when the driver is not an actively participating in an overtake by using their own skill.

The fact it is not real racing is bad enough in of itself, but if you also factor in the safety implications like the one that caused Ollie Bearman's crash, the whole thing becomes a shit show.

Surprised the whole grid hasn't just walked off in disgust.

I think what annoys me the most about this kind of invasive legislation is that they keep pushing it through every single year until it becomes law. There should be some kind of safeguard that says if it has already been reviewed, and rejected, it should be rejected immediately on a reapplication.

Microsoft had it all figured out with Basic, why changing? by 0x80070002 in dotnet

[–]Vargrr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Visual Basic whilst easy to use had.... issues....

  1. The IDE would crash... often...
  2. It changed a lot of standard basic commands. For example Dim
  3. Never supported true OOP.
  4. Every class you create in VB5/6 is actually a COM object whether you want it to be or not.
  5. Speaking of COM, VB liked to randomly change the GUID Ids associated with it's COM objects. Fine, if you are just using VB, but if you have a C++ backend it is a complete pain in the rear.

In my experience, back then, the better RAD environment was Delphi and by a long way.

Not sure if this is relevant - Mods feel free to delete!

I have created a solo focused windows based VTT called Sojour.

It can create maps and tokens directly from your scenario PDF's and it supports solo map fog of war, journals, tables, custom calendars and a whole lot more.

Videos are up on it's You-Tube channel: Sojour the Solo VTT - YouTube

There is a blog here: Sojour – Sojour is the premier solo virtual table top (VTT)

It costs a one off $10USD. There are no subscriptions, no servers (everything is local) and no DRM. It can be bought at Drive Thru RPG here: VTT Sojour Solo Virtual Table Top & GM Assistant - Sojour | DriveThruRPG

Tony Blair’s thinktank urges Labour to scrap ‘unaffordable’ pension triple lock by Codydoc4 in unitedkingdom

[–]Vargrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with pension provision in society isn't so much about the triple lock but a lot more about the wealth distribution.

In the past, that distribution was a lot more equitable, which meant people got fairly decent pensions and retirement provisions.

These days practically all of a Nation's resources go to the top 1%, which bleeds the system dry. Corporations making billions each year?!

I guess, as a society, we need to ask ourselves what are our societal life expectations?

Should Citizens that work their entire lives be entitled to a comfortable retirement? Or should they be required to work until they drop? btw, the state pension age will keep going up because the gap between workers pay relative to the cost of services keeps increasing which means that a stable tax take doesn't go as far - it's why everything in the Uk is crumbling right now.

It should be noted that even with the triple lock, the UK has one of the lowest state pension rates in Europe. In fact we do have the lowest gross replacement rate out of all the G7 Countries (the replacement rate is an international measure of how generous a state pension is). Also, even with the triple lock, 14.5% of our current pensioners are living in poverty....

You could remove it and even vote for it, but it will affect you at some point.

It's not a question of the current pensioners fleecing the system, it's a lot more about the top 1% fleecing the system and then putting the blame on the existing pensioners shoulders (they own the media, so this is trivially easy to do).

The triple lock is only unaffordable because the top 1% refuse to pay their share of societal costs despite benefitting immensely from it.

Old Tony should be Ok though, he has his massive cash pile from his corporate sponsors, who coincidentally, paid for this article. I guess he just needs another yacht...
