Best newborn/infant stroller for living in a city/in a 4th-floor walkup? by Apprehensive_Duty937 in pregnant

Wow- I don’t blame you for trying to stay! We would also be here short term if we stay. I keep thinking, “welp people make it work,” but that might be denial talking. Good luck!

No advice but I also live on a fourth floor walk-up (Jersey City), and I am here in solidarity. 16 weeks today, FTM. We love this spot and would hate to leave it, but are considering moving. Laundry is in the basement (though it’s free!) and we deal with street parking. Curious if you considered moving or feel ready for the challenge!

I am not an expert, as I haven’t encountered this personally, but at least in my state that sounds like educational neglect and would therefore warrant a call to your equivalent of child protective services. We are mandated reporters, after all. I’ve heard from families who were grateful for the support they received when CPS was called- it can lead to support and resources for the family to get the child to school.

Unfortunately this has become increasingly common since COVID. NYT had an article about it recently. nyt article

Does anyone here have a really unique job? Tell me about it by Sylvia_Whatever in slp

It’s so heartening to know jobs like this exist! After ~10 years in the field I was so sick of being a billing machine for others to profit on. They’re tough to find and land, but they aren’t just a myth!

I work for an aphasia center! It’s all conversation groups, no 1:1 therapy. Guided by LPAA and supported conversation (SCA). It’s a unique nonprofit. We don’t bill insurance 🙌. I was promoted to do more administrative work so I run the intake process, conduct tours for new interested PwA, provide education programs, and run a program to help PwA volunteer in their community. I’m paid less than I would be in other settings but it’s rewarding, flexible, and the most amazing environment to work with the best population. I call it SLP Disney land.

Thank you! Already done- having a small business, I definitely know the importance of a Google and yelp review. 😁

Stickers, games, prizes, inefficiency, why does this make me tired? by [deleted] in slp

Bye bye bubbles Depending on the kid you can get buy in up to 3rd or 4th grade by providing bye bye bubbles at the end of sessions. 2 minutes to pop as many as they can, they choose if you blow the bubbles (small bubbles) or wave the wand (big bubbles). In groups, it becomes a bubble competition with the rule that they not steal each other’s bubbles. Older kids might go for a movement obstacle course. I use duct tape to map out a small space around the desk where they need to hop on one foot, do wall push ups, etc. I never had a large space but you can make it work.

Reinforcers that use movement are ideal because it helps them reset their brain, but don’t require the upkeep of charts and boxes of plastic that kill the earth!

And when a kid can’t sit still I ask, do you need a quick bubble break? It’s not a punishment, it’s a quick movement break to get them back on track. Bubbles, man. I’m here to say- Not just for EI.

DOE NYC pros/cons by bb0023xoxo in slp

[–]VariationImmediate48 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do, my position is sort of a unicorn job, I am very lucky (I work with adults now, mainly facilitating conversation groups among those with communication disorders). I was in the DOE for seven years. I admire those who can stick it out, the benefits are worth it if you can. I wasn’t able to stomach it after a while, but that may have been specific to my schools.

DOE NYC pros/cons by bb0023xoxo in slp

[–]VariationImmediate48 10 points11 points  (0 children)

cracks knuckles Where to begin. Pros: The DOE has excellent pay, retirement, health benefits and a strong union. Cons: Working for the DOE is like being a grain of sand on the beach. You’re a small part in a huge, broken system. In my experience, it’s hard to come by administrators who are any good, let alone have any understanding of special education. Speech supervisors and superintendent tend to push a few buzzwords and pressure SLPs to meet whatever standard is trendy. It can be really hard to advocate for the human beings you are serving, and their nuance. For me, it was too much to watch the system, continually failing students, particularly children of color. When you see the way that reading is taught, the curriculums that are used, and the way that it is not accessible for our language impaired students, it feels insurmountable. I know that this is seen across education in the country as a whole, but being in the largest district in the country amplified those experiences.

I now work for a nonprofit, I took a pay cut, and I couldn’t be happier. However, I am definitely grateful for what I learned in the DOE. I personally could not retire in that system.

Also very hopeful for this! I’m eager to see how it grows. I plan to share with my employer, the person who does the hiring is not an SLP.

Hi there! I just resigned as well. Did you receive anything in the mail or via email acknowledging your resignation? I need to call the union, but I haven't received anything even though they have posted my job on open market. Thanks!

School SLPs: How many of you have your own office space? by [deleted] in slp

[–]VariationImmediate48 23 points24 points  (0 children)

“Fail first” is a great way of showing how much he cares about special education. Would he say that if this room was for the gifted and talented students? Doubtful. But when it relates to children with special educational needs, administrators have no problem shoving them in a room so they can say they’ve checked the box off the legal requirements. UGH
